ddeokbokki··on What's so hard about PDF text extraction?
This solution is absolutely beautiful
ddeokbokki··on Never Use Floats for Money (2016)
There is no source of errors in doing: bigint_value = float_value * 10^E if E else float_value float_value = bigint_value / 10^E if E else bigint_value

Obviously only convert to real numbers if you are doing operations on numbers in your system, otherwise keep in client format like you said.

ddeokbokki··on Court says Melbourne dentist can seek user details from Google over bad review
What's the difference with other review platforms?

I feel like on Google you at least have the google identity of the reviewer which tend to represent a natural person better than other accounts on other review platforms.

ddeokbokki··on Never Use Floats for Money (2016)
> Sometimes being compatible is more important than being correct.

It's a simple conversion for the sake of precision. If you are dealing with money transactions, you should strive for precise values wherever and whenever possible.

ddeokbokki··on It's time to switch to a four-day working week, say two experts
I've never seen anything else less than 40hrs in the UK, UK had the longest working time for a while and I think it still is the highest (in Europe at least) on average.
ddeokbokki··on It's time to switch to a four-day working week, say two experts
Yup, went contracting for this reason. Code is a passion of my and I love that it's also my trade but I have other personal ventures I need to focus my attention on and I have absolutely no juice left in a regular 5day/40hrs engineering week.

ddeokbokki··on The Future of Food Delivery [slides]
They already do - I wish it was more transparent in the app as it's currently ruining the experience.
ddeokbokki··on Lsd: The next gen ls command
OP's point is that if you know how to use ls you don't need icons and extra granularity in color scheme to understand the output.
ddeokbokki··on Some of China’s '996' tech tribe quit, seek less stress
> heavyweights such as Sequoia Capital’s Mike Moritz highlighted it as a competitive advantage over the United States.

It's an issue when the so-called tech heavyweights don't understand the basics of worker productivity in the industry.

ddeokbokki··on So You Want to Be a Penetration Tester?
What an amazing writeup.

From personal experience, Root-Me is easily one of the best way to get into infosec for someone with no prior knowledge of infosec or even information technologies in general.

ddeokbokki··on Life of Brian at 40: an assertion of individual freedom that still resonates
The prophet Mohammed in Islam is seen with more reverence than Jesus in Christianity, invoking his name is also very delicate in Islam (you are supposed to say a blessing anytime you do and avoid invoking it lightly, there's a lot of rules around it).

With these religious/cultural differences I can understand how Muslim take greater offence to people making fun of their most prominent prophet as opposed to Christians, but also you have to take into account that because of that, people usually are more provocative with their humour when it comes to Mohammed.

I can't remember having seen any sexually depraved depiction of Jesus in mainstream media whereas I can clearly remember many that depicted Mohammed.

IMO it's not as easy to make fun of Islam/Mohammed because people tend to go for the extreme in term of dark humour but also it's not perceived the same way by the religious communities.

ddeokbokki··on Emoji are showing up as evidence in court more frequently
People will argue that you should be able to convey your message clearly in plain English but those people don't realise that: - Not everyone masters English (even when it's your mother tongue, not everyone has access to the same education to be able to use it perfectly) - Languages are complex, we don't talk with words only, we use facial expressions and gestures, emojis help mimic those when only words are available.

> Anyone who conducts a business conversation over any medium but snail mail, fax, email or the phone deserves whatever misfortune befalls them.

That's going against progress, just like some people were against electronic communication for business transactions when they were first introduced.

I understand where you are coming from, texts are familiar, but more and more business run solely on messaging platforms and rely on texts to conduct business.

ddeokbokki··on How to Dress Like an Ottoman
Some nobody English man (Beau Brummell) one day declared that dressing in richly colored fabrics with intricate designs was not appropriate for men and was too akin to women fashion, thus starting the dandy-ism movement.

Eventually it caught on and through trade and colonization the movement started taking form worldwide and bleak standard menswear started replacing traditional clothing.

ddeokbokki··on U.S. teens are spending less time with their friends in person
You can be interesting and social indoors, online.

In my teenage years I played online games and had a group of online friends for years, some of which I am still in touch with regularly.

I don't understand how you get the boring bit though, partaking in outside activities does not make you interesting.

ddeokbokki··on Rules for Autocomplete
> Autocomplete on enter:

This irritates me as well and my brain now registered that to autocomplete on chrome I need to hit return/enter.

Issue is that on most forms where chrome suggests autocomplete based on what you fill other forms with, return/enter does not autocomplete and usually submits the form or goes to the next field..
