dcassett··on Dan Kohn has died
Ask your doc about Osmoprep, which are pills you take with 8 oz water periodically. No weird concoctions to drink.
dcassett··on Piipcam – 1080P IP Camera on a Raspberry Pi Zero W
A pull request?
dcassett··on Notes on My Colon Cancer
My doc. said he always uses the pills with water to prep for his own colonoscopies. I did the same (I believe the pills were named OsmoPrep) - 4 pills every 15 min with 8 oz of lukewarm water. Not pleasant but quite tolerable for me, and I will again ask for pills the next time.
dcassett··on Toward a “modern” Emacs
I just tried opening a large (11 MB) log file on a 2008 netbook and, except for the unexpected "File is large, really open?" question, the load time seemed instantaneous (Emacs 26.3, Lubuntu 16.04).
dcassett··on $1 hearing aid could treat millions with hearing loss
I was surprised to see a git repo consisting of one zip file. And that zip file itself contains a zip file.
dcassett··on The Model Checking Paradigm [video]

dcassett··on How and why I attempt to use Links as main browser
I find eww to be slow on my netbook (20 or 30 sec to return ddg.gg search results vs. 1 second for links).

dcassett··on Ask HN: What did you make during lockdown?
I enjoyed reading your translation of the excerpt from Nachtzug nach Lissabon. It got me interested in the book.
dcassett··on Why does OpenBSD still include Perl in its base installation?
When I read the perldocs much of it looks write-only. But in keeping with Perl's spirit of "there's more than one way to do it", one can actually write straightforward Perl code that is as understandable as Python.

dcassett··on Bees are essential to the almond industry, and billions are dying in the process
In the US the only milk my grandparents would drink was buttermilk (they called it "milk") that they made by culturing overnight on the kitchen counter. They called ordinary milk "sweet milk".

dcassett··on Lisp Programming in Vim with Slimv or Vlime
IMHO a very well-written article with great attention to detail. I especially liked the section on paredit with its step-by-step explanation.
dcassett··on Getting Started with Lisp in 2019
IMO Lisp is interesting, and worth learning even if you never use it for any serious project. It falls squarely in the HN guidelines as to what is suitable to post.
dcassett··on Learn Vim for the Last Time: A Tutorial and Primer
On Linux you can use the evim command to start up in insert mode, or to stay in insert mode in gvim, :set im
dcassett··on Music: A Mathematical Offering (2006)
The author says as much in the introduction:

"I should close with a disclaimer. Music is not mathematics."

dcassett··on How to Become a Lucid Dreamer
The article links to another about Mary Arnold-Forster, considered a pioneer in lucid dreaming. She wrote a book titled "Studies in dreams", available on archive.org:

dcassett··on Ask HN: Advice on Liquid Mercury Disposal
I had this situation in the '90s and called the city, and a fire marshall picked it up. Now my city has a hazardous waste center that handles all sorts of things including mercury.
dcassett··on I admit it: I like Python’s ternary operator
Ah, of course - thanks for clarifying
dcassett··on I admit it: I like Python’s ternary operator
Compared to C's ternary operator [1] it seems the Python version operates on 5 items.

dcassett··on Fixing Unix/Linux/Posix Filenames: Control Characters (Such as Newline), 2009
In the '90s there was a case of corporate espionage (theft of integrated circuit IP) where the guy had copied the design databases into a unix directory named '..^A' (control-A at the end) such that a 'ls -a' would show two '..' entries.
