dataminded··on Matter 1.2 – New device types and improvements
Hue -- it was the only option that felt 'mature' and well supported. We got a really great price on them and accept that we may swap them out in 3-5 years.
dataminded··on Matter 1.2 – New device types and improvements
It is still very hard to find matter devices. We wanted recessed downlights and ended up with Zigbee.

My air conditioner just died, would be great if a matter compatible one became available.

dataminded··on Why No One’s Going into Accounting
It's because the older generation of accountants screwed over the younger generation to build a moat around their own pay.

Becoming a CPA used to require only a bachelors degree in many states, now you need a master's degree. As a result, becoming a CPA requires an additional year of education, more debt, and more opportunity cost for no reason other than protecting the wages of older people.

dataminded··on Ask HN: Does anyone support single-tenant on the cloud?
For enough money the customer can get anything they want. I've been on the buy side at a stodgy financial services company and this offer came up frequently enough.
dataminded··on Ask HN: How do you describe what you do at parties?
Share more about why you do the things you do or the impact/effect of what you do and less about how you specifically do it.

I help people save money/retire more confidently by building tools that accurately calculate blah.

If you were a doctor you wouldn't say that you see patients or examine test results, you'd say that you help people dealing with blah.

dataminded··on What was the age of the oldest person admitted to Y Combinator?
If you can't work through disagreements now, starting a business together won't help.

What exactly does the business need to spend money on? You can get a free/starter/subsidized version of just about every component of a tech stack.

dataminded··on Ask HN: [USA] Why is it impossible to schedule a doctor's appointment?
If you can afford it, join a concierge medicine plan.

I get same day appointments with my doctors. They also respond to emails and text messages. It sucks that I have to pay an extra $4k/year for each adult in my house but we found it really hard to get medical care otherwise.

dataminded··on What was the age of the oldest person admitted to Y Combinator?
1. You and your co-founder might have a lot of relevant industry expertise or a productive Rolodex to accelerate sales.

2. Have you built anything or validated the idea in any way?

dataminded··on MGM Seeks Contractors to Repair Infra in 3 Weeks
$100/hr seriously?
dataminded··on Ask HN: Where do you learn real SEO that is not BS?
You implement the technical recommendations/requirements and then you test the crap out of everything else and then you remain ready to change everything whenever the algorithm changes.

The reason that so much BS persists is because most organizations lack the analytical rigor to test and measure all of their changes.

dataminded··on Ask HN: What should I ask the VP of my company?
What are the most important issues facing the department? - demonstrate empathy and a desire to contribute to the things that matter

what metrics or signals are most helpful to him in understanding and communicating the value that your department is delivering? - align yourself with the stuff he can actually use

dataminded··on [dead]
The landing page is too vague. Reminds me of every other resource that promises me insane stock returns if I follow their advice.

Maybe add a video and a link to a demo account.

dataminded··on Internet-connected cars fail privacy and security tests conducted by Mozilla
This is me. I bought two new cars every 2 years like clockwork. We replaced one car because we NEEDED a larger family car and have gone without the 2nd for over a year.

It feels impossibly hard to buy a great car today.

dataminded··on Ask HN: What are the best ChatGPT alternatives right now?
AWS Bedrock.
dataminded··on Ask HN: Tips for Efficiently Managing Full-Time Job, PhD, Side Hustles, Gym?
Is it possible that you are doing too much?
dataminded··on Ask HN: My mother is slowly losing her eyesight, how to prepare?
Check out Voice Dream on iOS and Macs for text to speech. I do all of my 'reading' on it.
dataminded··on Ask HN: Are SaaS free tiers disappearing?
But it is unlikely and is often VERY expensive to support. Small companies are often immature and unsophisticated. They will drown customer service, bad mouth your tech due to their poor implementations and distract you from serving enterprise customers. This is why many enterprise solutions have zero small business offering, the businesses are very different.

If you are huge and able to run an SMB play or if you can attach to an accelerator and do this for qualified leads, sure.

dataminded··on Ask HN: Are SaaS free tiers disappearing?
Frequently, no. Most companies with 20 servers aren't going to turn into 2000 server companies. A lot of companies with 20 servers are very immature, needy and demanding. It isn't worth the effort to continue support for non-customers that don't pay today and won't pay tomorrow.
dataminded··on Ask HN: What does a Director/Senior Director/VP/SVP of Product do day to day?
High level roles are about setting vision (a high level goal), ensuring that the org is progressing towards that vision, getting other same-sized groups to support your vision and resolving blockers to your vision.
dataminded··on Ask HN: Why SaaS products do not have a service account?
I think that SaaS products just disagree with your conclusion. Service accounts which are accounts that provide value and provide that value to your bigger and more complicated customers, should cost money. The smallest and most price sensitive clients, don't need them and thus aren't impacted by paying for them.
dataminded··on Are Consultants worth the money they charge?
Because they don't have the experience. For many technologies and projects, the pool of people who have done it is small and not already working at the company who needs it.
dataminded··on Gitlab has introduced a five-user limit for free groups
IT tried to get us to migrate to Gitlab in a past life, it went absolutely nowhere. Gitlab is stupidly expensive and complicated for value that never realized.
dataminded··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2023)
I've seen this with technical roles where you start in one job family and get promoted to another. E.g., Integration Analyst I....Integration Analyst IV -> Data Engineer I

There's also cases like Medical Doctors where the start already requires meaningful education and training.

Some titles/responsibilities aren't appropriate for someone with no experience but that doesn't make the people in those titles senior at that function.

dataminded··on Ask HN: Which CS departments worldwide provide the best undergrad education?
I think a great undergrad student would do just as well at any top-tier research institution. I would bias towards schools near Boston, NYC and SF/Palo Alto for the industry connections and opportunities. Maybe MI/PA for Auto/robotics.

All top-tier institutions have the faculty and opportunities to support undergrads as much as necessary. Extremely successful undergrads, are such because of what they do outside/beyond the classroom not because of the core coursework. If you continue beyond undergrad, pick a school that aligns with your research interest or has the industry network that you need.

dataminded··on Amazon Titan
In my experience, that has not been true. Setting up Azure is its own major undertaking and requires an entire separate set of security reviews and approvals.
dataminded··on Amazon Titan
For MANY companies, the AWS solutions are automatically approved and only require putting on the IT backlog. Any other vendor or cloud could easily take a year or more to bring online and would require an excruciating amount of scrutiny for every integration that you wanted to turn on. AWS often doesn't even require any budget review/approval.

AWS has done a great job selling itself as the trustable, secure and one-stop shop to IT.

dataminded··on Ask HN: Desktop vs. Laptop with ARM/Apple Silicon
I've used the same setup for as long as finances have allowed, a mac laptop for travel and a windows/linux desktop for home.
dataminded··on Ask HN: How do I get back into the tech industry after 4 years of unemployment?
1. Just apply. Start with regional companies. 2. Just apply. Tell them you could afford the time off and took it. What better time to be free than in your 20's? 3. Just apply. Do try to code though and see if it is still something you want to do. 4. You can't pick the timing and can't predict how things will be a year from now. Find a job before you NEED a job.
dataminded··on Ask HN: Upskilling as a Data Engineer
Analytics Engineering are folks that transform data in an ELT model. The most popular tool is DBT.

I think the work will continue as companies embrace the idea of not writing custom ETL code anymore. The tools are super immature though. DBT is a huge improvement over the past but far from a final solution to the problem.

dataminded··on Ask HN: What's a build vs. buy decision that you got wrong?
I'm looking forward to your SSO product. I hope that it adopts the same developer friendly pricing as your current product.
