danvideo··on Amazon's homepage was down
it looks like just homepage

all the internal links seem to be working fine http://www.amazon.com/gp/site-directory/

edit: added less ugly link

danvideo··on Meet Watsi, Y Combinator's First Nonprofit
Site and mission sound great, I'm looking forward to contributing.

Hopefully it'll quickly join the ranks of the larger crowdfunding non-for-profits like Kiva.org, Donorschoose, etc...

danvideo··on A new kind of checking account. No overdraft fees. No worries.
right, we're in NYC and I can't access it either
danvideo··on Doom3 Gangnam Style in WebGL
Very creative and entertaining. I can't stop watching the middle monster.

Something I didn't realize at first was the ability to use the movement keys - seeing different angles is pretty cool. As another comment mentioned, the sync could definitely be tighter, but otherwise well done.

danvideo··on Want to learn to code? Don't copy and paste, type out other people's code
see what looks like CloudFlare's reply above... one needs to set up html caching
danvideo··on Want to learn to code? Don't copy and paste, type out other people's code
But the question still remains why would Cloud Flare advertise this?
danvideo··on Ask HN: What's the site name where you answer misc tweet questions?
finally found it: http://youasked.it/

I really liked the timed aspect... great urgency

danvideo··on Ask HN: What's the site name where you answer misc tweet questions?
About a month ago someone showed HN his new project that was a Q&A site, where you are given random tweet questions and have a set amount of time to give answers? I can't recall it and too general to google...
danvideo··on Dune II ported to the Web with Emscripten
Anyone else having trouble getting it running? I'm on a very fast internet connection and it's been 2-3 minutes of black screen already.
danvideo··on How do they make money?
I had all the same objections. Their information sounds very outdated, especially how it applies to kickstarter.
danvideo··on Why was a scam company able to raise $76 Million Series B?
checkout the wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JustFab

The criticisms are mentions as well as a lawsuit. Also note that this HN page is given as a source.

danvideo··on Trello Android App Available for Download
The app looks pretty good, but it would be cool if there was a way to see an overview of your board - from what I can tell you can only see one list/column at a time (even if it was only w/horizontal viewing). It would make dragging things back and forth a little easier.
danvideo··on Craigslist Blocks Search Engine Indexing, Hangs Itself to Remove Competitors
was about to say exact same thing - hangs itself? cmon.

Does anyone have an idea how many people go to craiglist from search engines anyway? Aside from people using the API type/scraper sites... is it common to find jobs/furniture/apts from sites other than the site itself?

danvideo··on Jonah Lehrer Resigns From The New Yorker After Making Up Quotes
Tablet's been on and offline all day, I'd imagine from server overload--- Michael Moynihan, the author, was the one who originally broke the story with his investigations.
danvideo··on Issues
Yep, their wording now doesn't bother me much, but I find a lack of clear explanation after the fact particularly irksome (what was affected, where, why).
danvideo··on Google Fiber Plans & Pricing
Right, I would have preferred a quiet roll out, until large metro areas were ready to go live. It's going to be at least 2013 before most of us even have the option to use it.

Sort of like hearing that the new Android upgrade is available, but only international phones for the next year, and your phone might not even support the new version.

danvideo··on If you run a contest as a startup, don't be dishonest. JPEGmini scammed me.
I noticed something odd on the JPEGmini homepage. They have a before/after scan over, as illustration of what the product does, but in the source it looks like they are linking to images of the similar size.

Here are the files and sizes referred to in the source:

272K preview-rolands.lakis.jpg 247K preview-rolands.lakis2.jpg 248K preview-rolands.lakis2_mini.jpg 276K preview-rolands.lakis_mini.jpg

I suppose they could have just screengrabbed both images, but that seems to defeat the point...

danvideo··on [dead]
ok thanks, didn't realize that had changed, will revisit
danvideo··on [dead]
Cloudflare offers a good value, but not having things like html caching is frustrating and one of the reasons we're not using them.
danvideo··on Show HN: ChatStep - Online Group Chat
this sounds like the diagnosis to why I can't get it working either, though I never saw a browser request for a particular port
danvideo··on Show HN: ChatStep - Online Group Chat
red X near the following... GET https://chatstep.com:4000/socket.io/1/?t=1341425107446 socket.io.js:1632 Socket.handshake socket.io.js:1632 Socket.connect socket.io.js:1671 Socket socket.io.js:1530 io.connect socket.io.js:91 (anonymous function)
danvideo··on Show HN: ChatStep - Online Group Chat
using windows 7 and chrome - can't create or join rooms

edit: now realizing it's probably corporate FW related, blocking port 4000

danvideo··on THN Magazine Stole Our Code and Design
In spite of its problems, I'd consider subscribing to The Hacker News Magazine if this article makes it into the next issue of the magazine.
danvideo··on THN Magazine Stole Our Code and Design
The "@override http://hm.local is still there.

Sheesh, it takes someone quite clever to copy code comments linking back to the original code.

ed: phrasing corrected

danvideo··on Meet the tireless entrepreneur who squatted at AOL
Might be wrong, but isn't California law especially lenient about ownership of work produced outside of work hours? (vs. here in NYC, for example)
danvideo··on It's the Postgres Age
MySQL support is fantastic - they offer optimization along with troubleshooting - and respond immediately. Also, they are relatively cheap as far as support goes.
danvideo··on Ask HN: $640 Million... why do so many people insist on buying lottery tickets?
"I guess I think of lotteries as a tax on the mathematically challenged." -Roger Jones

I haven't followed much of his other work, but this rings true.

danvideo··on NameCheap DNS servers are down
right now several are down... here's a better link: http://www.namecheap.com/status.aspx
danvideo··on GTA clone in HTML5
cool concept, but I wish the aiming crosshairs could be controlled by the mouse without having to reclick and move after each shot. very frustrating.
danvideo··on Notch gives his $3,000,000 Minecraft dividend to his employees
MMM discusses this kind of thing all the time, re: how much money is enough for financial independence. See related post about $$$ vs. family: http://www.mrmoneymustache.com/2012/03/02/reader-case-study-...
