cybersol··on Acetaminophen vs. ibuprofen
I had intestinal bleeding after double ibuprofen dosage over several weeks for back pain. Definitely watch out for any prolonged and heavy use of NSAIDs.
cybersol··on NASA has reestablished full communications with Voyager 2
It's amazing these projects began over 50 years ago in 1972 when 8-track tapes still dominated cassettes for music delivery.
cybersol··on National Geographic lays off its last remaining staff writers
Am I the only one who would pay micro transaction fees to read specific high quality articles? I guess so since so many companies just died instead of trying that model.
cybersol··on Microsoft Edge removes ability to delete Sync Data from Cloud
From the headline this also seems to violate the CCPA in California.
cybersol··on FDIC Takes over Silicon Valley Bank
HN thread on this is here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=35100743
cybersol··on Valve Introduces Proton Next
So Proton is like Debian, Proton Next is like Debian Testing, and Proton Experimental is like Debian Sid. Got it, thanks!
cybersol··on Ask HN: Why hasn't the ACH system been more abused?
Maybe I am missing something, but isn't pushing this way usually possible by one-time BillPay?
cybersol··on The new warrant: how US police mine Google for your location and search history
When both the government and the advertising companies have an aligned incentive to spy on us all, Why would the government pass either privacy or advertising laws?
cybersol··on Social media influencer/model created from AI lands 100 sponsorships
Thanks for the perspective. The closest western way of thinking to be is, "It is not the about the destination but the journey". The whole concept also reminds me of Eckhart Tolle's "Life is the dancer and you are the dance?", which is a very different way of thinking about yourself as the changing and moving thing instead of a fixed person.
cybersol··on YouTube takes down the Ig Nobel show because of a 1914 recording
For now, at least until they extend it another 100 years.
cybersol··on Implementation plan for speeding up CPython
The people who made psycho decided they needed a JIT to really make Python much faster. So they created PyPy and developed it instead.
cybersol··on If founders treated their investors the same way they treated their employees
The terms are often the same, but the percentage is more like 1% than 0.1%. Also the easy way up the management chain is to be a warm body in a rapidly growing company.
cybersol··on Coming to Chrome: a new way to use tabs
I have a dream. What I really want was likely not possible when tabs were invented, but should be now.

I want least recently used tabs to automatically fade away, but still be fully known and searchable the way that 'search my computer' or 'google search' works. With search filters like last hour/day/week/month. And it seems like history should be kept per tab, not altogether.

This way I keep a minimal-to-medium number of active tabs, but have all those magical things-to-do, pseudo-bookmarks, or other things that cause open tabs to grow and grow available via a quick search interface, auto-magically.

cybersol··on The Case for Doing Nothing
I would gladly pay per article, but unfortunately that is not an option.
cybersol··on What a Senior Staff Software Engineer Does
The follow-up blog she linked at the bottom is even better at describing the mindset of a technical leader, which will take you far in any organization no matter what your current title is.
cybersol··on Uber Posts $5.2B Loss and Slowest Ever Growth Rate
Parking spaces at both at home and work can easily be more than that in a major city. That is more limiting than even the car costs.
cybersol··on High levels of oestrogens in the womb linked to autism
I would be interested in references here, as I'm not aware of treatments specific to autism in adults.
cybersol··on Cats rival dogs on many tests of social smarts
I'm convinced most cats know a lot, they just don't feel the need to let you know they know.
cybersol··on Python overtakes JavaScript as most questioned language on StackOverflow
On the other hand, as someone who reads other peoples code just as my as I write my own, maybe by the time your lambda is many lines it should have its own name. And maybe the name should be really informative about what the function does.
cybersol··on Aphantasia: 'My mind's eye is blind'
My strongest past memories of landscapes are this way, which I have also described as something like an expressionist painting. My conjured mental images (picture a red star) are just black though.
cybersol··on Seven Unix Commands Every Data Scientist Should Know
'sort' and 'uniq' should also be near the top of the list. And once your doing more on the command-line, 'join' and 'comm' can help you merge data from multiple files.
cybersol··on Outperforming everything with anything: Python? Sure, why not?
I love using Python for getting stuff made fast, and then only if needed accelerating a few function calls to make it fast. I have used scipy, cython, and even the C-API for this, but this looks like a interesting new take.
cybersol··on A meteorite hit the moon during yesterday's total lunar eclipse
I didn't see it, but a couple of people in chat on the live PBS feed mentioned it. IIRC it was about half-way between peak and going back to partial.
cybersol··on Body-painting protects against bloodsucking insects
So much this. They definitely sense CO2 and thermal/IR.
cybersol··on How much Americans make in wages
Yeah I looked for a * or reference of some kind, but did not find one. I think they are using 30k as the threshold for the 48% number, while the median is the 31k and change number.
cybersol··on The Relentlessness of Modern Parenting
I was interested in this statistic and how it compares to say the 1960's and 70's. If you look without adjusting for population you just get an exponential increase that overwhelms the signal. But the statistics adjusting for population still back up your claim here: https://www.statista.com/statistics/184603/deaths-by-uninten...
cybersol··on Game dev: Linux users were only 0.1% of sales but 20% of crashes and tickets
This! I've been gaming exclusively on Linux since 2009, though it was rough until 2013. I also quite a few Linux gamers are great at diagnosing their own problems. When we do report bugs, I bet the reports are more useful on average.
cybersol··on Talent Is Everywhere, Opportunity Is Not
Sure in an ideal world you would not need affirmative action or whatever they want to call it these days. Also in a perfect utopia communism lets everyone share everything equally and is clearly superior to capitalism. Unfortunately we don't live in perfect utopia, and thus need practical solutions like capitalism, democracy, and even affirmative action. Which reminds me of Churchill's quote: "Democracy is the worst form of Government except all those other forms that have been tried..."
cybersol··on Talent Is Everywhere, Opportunity Is Not
I think increasing economic stratification is very natural and happens often in history. It's just that historically when it gets too extreme, the poor kill the rich and start it all over again.
cybersol··on The blind mind: No sensory visual imagery in aphantasia
I think mentally imagining while driving is probably dangerous for everyone, normal and aphantasiac. It's a question I otherwise can't answer, since I just see mostly blackness. Though I liked nnnn's answer about a second monitor, separate from his visual input stream.
