cyberlurker··on Flicking the kill switch: governments embrace internet shutdowns
Which emergency are you referring to? And what censorship methods are you referring to?

For example, I think the media choosing not to cover a story immediately when it is being peddled by an unreliable political agent doesn’t qualify as censorship. Even if it turns out to be true.

cyberlurker··on Walmart Sells Fake 30TB Hard Drive That's Two Small SD Cards
I bought a light fixture off of Amazon that caught fire on its own. I reported it to customer support and said it should be removed from the marketplace. They did for a day but it was up the day after.

So yeah add light fixtures to the list.

cyberlurker··on Speech by Chair Powell on monetary policy and price stability
Yea, we don't know which way anything is going to go so it might end up being better to wait. As of now though, home prices haven't dropped much in many areas due to lack of supply. I think both positions have merit, but for a variety of reasons I think the lower rate home is the better position. And you also don't really “lose” money, but yes the house value on paper could go down from the historic highs.
cyberlurker··on Speech by Chair Powell on monetary policy and price stability
Right, do not expect rates near 0 in the foreseeable future and as a follow on to that, mortgage rates will go up. So if you are locked in for 30 years with a mortgage purchased the last few years, you did well.
cyberlurker··on There’s no speed limit (2009)
This is a jerk response. They were not bragging about being smart.
cyberlurker··on Snap is giving up on its Pixy drone after just four months
Why would they give up on it if it is selling well? I think it’s a cool idea and pretty much the only reason I would ever install their app.
cyberlurker··on Apple tells employees to work at the office three times per week starting Sept
Also, if you have a top heavy, senior exec filled org, they likely all own expensive property nearer to the office than the average worker (in big US cities).

Think NYC. At a few companies I noticed the decision makers had nice apartments in Manhattan or big homes with reasonable commutes from CT or NJ, or both. It isn't like those property values went down, but over a long enough period of time maybe the value wouldn't grow as quick with WFH.

Also, just being out of touch with the reality of housing for most non business decision making employees.

A standing desk is a must. It makes me more productive because my body doesn't fall apart from sitting all day, so if I am in the zone I can stay there but just switch to standing and back. Previously, I needed to go on walks.

My body requires this in my late 20’s.

Every workplace should provide reimbursement for a standing desk and floor mat imo.

cyberlurker··on Ask HN: What's the next big thing that few people are talking about?
I did the bike grocery thing for years. And on public transport. It is highly dependent on climate, infrastructure, family size, being healthy…

Your point is valid, people drive short distances. But what if there are no sidewalks? Ive seen that too.

cyberlurker··on Coral makes comeback on Great Barrier Reef
I felt this article left some things unexplained, like what is a mass bleaching event? The wikipedia article on Coral Bleaching is excellent. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coral_bleaching

Also, cool note on the economics: “Experts estimate that coral reef services are worth up to $1.2 million per hectare which translates to an average of $172 billion per year.”

Someone do the math, what is the value of this comeback in USD?

cyberlurker··on MIT invents $4 solar desalination device
$4 for 4 people too.
cyberlurker··on Tell HN: LinkedIn is automatically importing job postings into company profiles
This is definitely true, but then I also see more experienced developers and researchers tweeting about these people making fun of them and calling them on their bullshit.

I think tech Twitter quality is heavily dependent on being thoughtful of who you follow.

cyberlurker··on “After Going Solar, I Felt the Bliss of Sudden Abundance”
This observation is detached from reality in so many ways it should be a copypasta.

Merkel is not even in office anymore and you can be sure Macron wouldn’t be either if it wasn’t for French nuclear power and that he just won an election before these decisions.

Germany doesn't even know if they will make it through the winter properly.

The claim that deflation is largely accepted is wrong and in conflict with EU leadership statement and goals.

A segment of the EU is cheering on the decision due to the war first and foremost. The environmental benefits are laughable because they have already turned to restarting coal plants that were previously shut down.

No, the youth are great but this is a deluded view.

cyberlurker··on The Best iPhone
I also miss the fingerprint sensor. It’s fast and effective. I wish they would add it to the power button or if they can improve the tech, under the screen.
cyberlurker··on Tell HN: Salesforce has globally revoked Slack's holiday shutdown benefit
This is how to fight inflation. It is the goal, not just welcomed.
cyberlurker··on Critical flaws in GPS tracker enable “disastrous” and “life-threatening” hacks
From another source: https://www.engadget.com/micodus-mv720-vulnerabilities-discl...

This won’t be good…

cyberlurker··on China mortgage boycott data erased by censors as crisis spreads
It’s been happening. One example is Vietnam.
cyberlurker··on Designing the Characters of 'Cowboy Bebop'
I also enjoyed it for what it was. I was easily able to make it through the entire season and also would have liked a second season.

The anime is one of the best of all time though, so I understand why people had high expectations.

cyberlurker··on Former Japan PM Shinzo Abe Unconscious After Shooting; Man in Custody
No, you’re right. Im assuming they mean child mortality.
cyberlurker··on Tech layoffs keep stacking up
It can mitigate the chance of being laid off. Keeping your head down and working hard isn't enough anymore.
cyberlurker··on Ask HN: How do I stop this Facebook stalker?
Oh, I will try this. Thank you.
cyberlurker··on Ask HN: How do I stop this Facebook stalker?
Oooh, maybe.
cyberlurker··on Japan passes revised penal code with harsher punishment for cyberbullying
I think it’s hard to police this stuff. I could see someone sarcastically saying “kys” for forgetting to buy an item or something. Is it often used for bullying? Yea. I’m not going to draw the line at “kys”, but i don’t think it is as obvious as you make it out to be.
cyberlurker··on Japan passes revised penal code with harsher punishment for cyberbullying
Agreed, let the platforms face fines and regulation, not jail the end users. Although some online bullying is much more blatant than your example.
cyberlurker··on Japan passes revised penal code with harsher punishment for cyberbullying
I don't think the reasons are good, but gamers often trash talk and bully each other in game. For example, Riot needed to ban people from typing “kys” in League of Legends because it means “kill your self” and they were worried about it. (Whether that is because they care about the players or their liability or both is not for me to decide)
cyberlurker··on It matters how you raise your kids
I think things like tiktok and instagram have made it difficult to not know/think you are poor.
cyberlurker··on The case for expanding rather than eliminating gifted education programs (2021)
Sorry, the two comments in my one post were not related. You are right, I was referring to most suburb public schools.
cyberlurker··on Former U.S. congressman, operative pleads guilty to election fraud charges
Passing it would be seen as an admission by one side that this kinda stuff happens often enough to warrant it.
cyberlurker··on The case for expanding rather than eliminating gifted education programs (2021)
In NYC they also flatten all Asians into one group and say the “gifted” programs aren't diverse enough because a high percentage are Asian. As if implying Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Korean, etc. all have the same life experience, cultures, advantages, disadvantages…

Also you nailed it on the property tax point. Often overlooked as the biggest issue with education. A similar sized home in a good school district can be 2 or 3x as expensive as one in a mediocre school district.

Edit: when talking about property tax, I am referring to most suburbs, not NYC.

Seems like a lot of people are posting evidence that the property tax point is correlated with better schools but the funding difference is made up for by the stare and federal government. Interesting.
