cyberlurker··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
Whatever they want to charge you with.
cyberlurker··on 32bit Apple app running on M4 natively
It’s a neat application of an existing project being applied to a new problem with the assistance of Claude Code. But the OP admits he doesn’t have deep experience with what he is doing and that it is currently very unstable.
cyberlurker··on Apple raises prices of MacBooks, iPads
True but you can also buy a RPI or other cheap computer and do literally whatever you want with it. Those walled gardens and portals serve a purpose for many users who don’t care about being restricted for the benefits that come with it.
cyberlurker··on The deadly rise of giant trucks and SUVs
Those cars already exist. They are made in China and banned for sale in the US.
cyberlurker··on US inflation jumps to 3.8% as energy costs surge from Iran war
I could see this happening if the point of the arms industry was defense and not a jobs program.

They will just pay the toll.

cyberlurker··on The web does not need gatekeepers: Cloudflare’s new “signed agents” pitch
I would love that vision to become reality but what Cloudflare is doing is unfortunately necessary atm.
cyberlurker··on The anti-abundance critique on housing is wrong
Prices would drop where homes are commonly rented. I suppose rent could turn into lease to own in the interim period. It’s an interesting idea, I wonder if any economists have played it out.

What about those people that have homes but rent out a room? Or a townhouse that has 3 units, but the landlord lives in one?

I guess they could sell the units or move to a smaller place, but I think there may be an adverse effect of potential housing staying locked up because there isn’t a legal way to preserve options of ownership. It may decrease housing in some instances. Which force is more powerful though, I am not sure.

cyberlurker··on The anti-abundance critique on housing is wrong
Am I wrong, or is this kind of a silly date range considering the housing crash was in the middle?

> According to the National Association of Home Builders, profit margins as a share of overall home-sale prices actually declined slightly between 2002 and 2024.

cyberlurker··on Fakespot shuts down today after 9 years of detecting fake product reviews
I bought a light fixture that had a design flaw that turned it into a fire hazard. I contacted Amazon and provided proof, hoping they’d take the product down and prevent harm to others. They did initially but within a few days the same exact item with matching SKU and photos was listed.

I have an entire category of items I will never buy from Amazon. They don’t look out for customers ahead of time, only on the backend when you complain.

cyberlurker··on Mississippi Can't Possibly Have Good Schools
What if the reason is external to the school? Hmm, what has changed between 2004 and 2024?

We have devices and experiences that are medically classified as addictive. It can also be home life stuff, it’s kind of a difficult time for a lot of people.

We could have the best trained and supported teachers in the world, but they are up against completely different challenges.

I’m not saying we can never fire anyone. But you suggesting that if we don’t like an outcome we get rid of someone without understanding the entire problem is plain dumb.

cyberlurker··on Corporation for Public Broadcasting Statement Regarding Executive Order
If true, that is insane and if presented as factual those involved should be fired. But throwing the baby out with the bath water is not sensible.

Oh and to my original point, why is this not cited or linked to in the executive order? I think it would strengthen it if anything.

cyberlurker··on Corporation for Public Broadcasting Statement Regarding Executive Order
I listen to planet money and a few other podcasts. They seem pretty fair to me. The only way I could maybe see a progressive bias is that they have representation in their staff of racial and sexual minorities. I see no issue with that.

Honest question, does NPR have any token conservative pundits or voices on their broadcasts or shows? I know they have a lot of minority representation. As usual, Trumps proposed solution is idiotic. But maybe there could be an unofficial settlement to make sure all perspectives are heard?

Assuming this is even a problem…

The attack on PBS seems ridiculous.

cyberlurker··on Corporation for Public Broadcasting Statement Regarding Executive Order
Could you share what the courts have done? What I’ve witnessed is cowardice to hold officials accountable or in contempt for unconstitutional acts.
cyberlurker··on Corporation for Public Broadcasting Statement Regarding Executive Order
Is it unusual for an executive order to claim something like this without any citation or reference?

> The CPB fails to abide by these principles to the extent it subsidizes NPR and PBS.

> Which viewpoints NPR and PBS promote does not matter.

> What does matter is that neither entity presents a fair, accurate, or unbiased portrayal of current events to taxpaying citizens.

cyberlurker··on Why drinking coffee in Iran has become so complicated
I would like to hear more. Why is it more interesting? Is it really that rare for Iranians to write in English for Western audiences?
cyberlurker··on mIRC 7.81
There was definitely competition for most post count and some forums had reputation.
cyberlurker··on The End of Sierra as We Knew It, Part 1: The Acquisition
It’s generally a bad idea to ask someone to name their price. And the right answer to that question is “A lot”.
cyberlurker··on What the Press Got Wrong About Hitler
The frustrating thing is our elected and appointed officials should have been fighting this furiously. Jan 6th should have resulted in actual consequences.
cyberlurker··on Generative AI Hype Peaking
It’s absolutely amazing what these things can produce with simple prompts. I do think it deserves recognition as a top 5 innovation of the last 100 years. We can call it really good autocomplete but it really is incredible.

That doesn’t mean I agree all jobs are going away, AGI is here, or all these other guesses people are making about the future.

cyberlurker··on Generative AI Hype Peaking
You can run distilled LLMs on your phone today that are surprisingly good. In 3-4 years I think an individual could self host for much less than thousands a month.

This wouldn’t be my biggest worry.

cyberlurker··on Generative AI Hype Peaking
Which part of the economy are you taking inspiration from?
cyberlurker··on Generative AI Hype Peaking
Listening to his podcast on the topic was so disappointing. I think Ezra is a smart guy, but he doesn’t understand the field and the entire premise of the long discussion was that LLMs are going to get us to AGI.
cyberlurker··on Wall Street stocks tumble as investors fret over US economic slowdown
That’s all true, but there was high inflation and temporarily high gas prices caused in part by the War in Ukraine and OPEC cutting production.

The difference is obviously these were not self inflicted like whatever the Trump administration is doing.

cyberlurker··on Wall Street stocks tumble as investors fret over US economic slowdown
We’ve been waiting for Congress to respond for weeks. I wouldn’t hold your breath.
cyberlurker··on Mark Carney is the new leader of the Liberal Party of Canada
It sounds like the person you’re replying to thinks Carney's Liberal Party is set to lose the upcoming election. Before Trump started going after Canada, the Conservatives seemed like a sure bet to take over Parliament. But since the tariffs came into play, the Liberals have really picked up steam. No matter where you stand politically, I think Trump isn’t the best at thinking strategically. He could have waited for the next Canadian election and probably ended up with a party in power that would be easier to negotiate with. Now, things are a lot less certain, and it could even give the Liberals a chance to come back stronger. It’ll be interesting to see how it all plays out. Plus, it’s kind of idiotic that Trump pushed for the USMCA, which looked like a win for him, but these tariffs seem to go against the spirit of that agreement. It makes you wonder why anyone would want to deal with him in good faith moving forward.
