cyberjunkie··on Ask HN: What are some examples of well-designed personal sites?
No RSS on his blog. I like following people's blogs using a RSS feed reader.
cyberjunkie··on Ask HN: What tech choices make “new” Reddit so unbearably slow?
I'm just grateful that old.reddit.com is still live! I also dread the day they decide to shut it.
cyberjunkie··on The Consumer Electronics Hall Of Fame: Sony Trinitron (2018)
You could tap the monitor and all the strings would move in this wave-like manner. The two horizontal wires were so cool to have. They were the sharpest CRT monitors.
cyberjunkie··on Raspberry Pi 4 WiFi stops working at 2560 x 1440 screen resolution
A Xenon flash used to freeze the Pi 2.
cyberjunkie··on Sweet Home 3D is a free interior design application
This reminds me of 3D Home Architect, by Broderbund, the publishers of Prince back in the 90s! The Print Shop!
cyberjunkie··on Wikipedia’s co-founder takes on Facebook with ad-free social network
The same situation here. Registered with my real name and it asked me to verify the account, then I was asked to pay on a yearly basis.
cyberjunkie··on John Carmack: I’m going to work on artificial general intelligence
I can trust John Carmack's words when he says in an interview, or on stage. There's a passion in his talks, a nervousness in blurting what he really feels, and those are really good traits, in my mind.

I genuinely felt a sense of disappointment when he moved to Facebook (via the Occulus acquisition). So yea, fuck you, Facebook and your manipulative, life values corrupting and PR machinery.

I place John Carmack miles above Zuckerberg.

cyberjunkie··on Show HN: Curated List of Windows Utilities
Nice list. Am I the only one using IrfanView as an image viewer? Is there anything better?
cyberjunkie··on Pocket Casts Is Now Free
I'm glad I paid for Pocket Casts ages ago. It's a brilliant app that's beautifully designed, and had features well before the competition caught up with support for the desktop as well. For my early support, they offered me 3 years of Plus for free. I'm happy.
cyberjunkie··on Windows File Manager re-released
Oh, this is so quick.
cyberjunkie··on TUI Demo – Terminal Interface to Mastodon
I wish Telegram had a nicer, better updated CLI app.
cyberjunkie··on Why the Amazon Basics Keyboard Is My Favorite Keyboard
I use a Cherry MX Blue keyboard at home and I have the same model I bought 12 years ago for work too. I wanted to try out something quiet, affordable, with lesser travel and something that doesn't annoy people around me. The post makes me want to try out the AmazonBasics one and the Logitech K120.

Not too much to lose.

cyberjunkie··on Installing Debian Linux 2.0 (1998)
Tried installing my first Linux distribution, Slackware (3.4) in 1997. It worked. I deleted the only partition on that 630MB Seagate drive, and wondered why Windows wouldn't boot anymore.
cyberjunkie··on Cruise-line companies are building private Caribbean play zones
The Patriot Act recently did a nice episode on cruise-line companies. Just watched it last night.
cyberjunkie··on The Shady World of Repair Manuals: Copyrighting for Planned Obsolescence (2012)
Stuff You Should Know did a podcast episode on Planned Obsolescence - https://www.stuffyoushouldknow.com/podcasts/planned-obsolesc...
cyberjunkie··on The Great Stink
Aye. I heard this recently. It's really, really good!
cyberjunkie··on List of Topics Categorized as Pseudoscience
A lot of us like this post, because we can run through it and not be offended by any of it.

Unfortunately, the vast majority of people will run through it and will be happy ignoring the one or two on the list that they seriously subscribe to.

cyberjunkie··on Preserving Laptop Stickers on MacBooks
My two stickers cover a scratch and a tampered badge on a top-end, used ThinkPad X1 Carbon. Stylish and serves the purpose!
cyberjunkie··on Raspberry Pi 4
Oh my! This is such a crazy upgrade. I've been using the RPI2 as my HTPC/NAS at my folks, and I'm so happy with it. I was itching to get the last one for myself.

USB 3.0! Gigabit Ethernet! WiFi 802.11ac, BT 5.0, 4GB RAM! 4K! $55 at most?!

What the!? How the??! I know I'm not maintaining decorum at Hacker News, but I am SO mighty, MIGHTY excited!

I'm setting up a VPN to hook this (when I get it) to my VPS and then do a LOT of fun stuff back and forth, remotely, and with the other RPI at my folks.

cyberjunkie··on India has the highest data usage per smartphone
It might be the videos shared on WhatsApp, TikTok, Youtube, then the Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hotstar consumption.

We were deprived for the longest, being offered a gigabyte for a month for $5 - $10, and now we have practically free mobile connectivity with data.

cyberjunkie··on Aerc – An email client that runs in the terminal
I am a Nano user! Very happy. Vim users be hatin~
cyberjunkie··on Aerc – An email client that runs in the terminal
Oh, I used this back in the mid-90s and it was SO good!
cyberjunkie··on Does reading fiction make us better people?
It might be an unpopular opinion, but I wonder if reading only, and only fantasy and fiction makes people lose their grip on reality.
cyberjunkie··on What We Want Doesn’t Always Make Us Happy
Some things, very few things are genuinely wanted and we value them all along.

The rest that follows, not so much. Wanting to want is the fun, not getting what you want. Once you have it, you want something else, then the pursuit of wanting it.

cyberjunkie··on The Parker “51” (2018)
Quick guide - Really affordable stuff to start with - Jinhao 992, Jinhao X450, Jinhao X750, Platinum Preppy (all of them range between $5 - $8)

I've progressed to the slightly pricier Lamy Safari now. Excellent experience and good to see my handwriting improve, while being a soothing, gratifying experience.

cyberjunkie··on Mozilla – Devil Incarnate
As is our attitude of Mozilla's criticism of other browsers and practices, it's only rational for us to read and understand this author's views with an open mind.

Invalid ones can be dismissed, but any valid criticism only helps towards progress.

cyberjunkie··on Why Do Buses Bunch?
I feel like I must encourage everyone to play Transport Tycoon Deluxe, or OpenTTD.
cyberjunkie··on Who has the fastest website in F1?
Yep. I'm watching an episode every day and it even made me want to watch a race the past weekend. I kinda miss following it, and I lost touch since 2007-2009.
cyberjunkie··on Death metal music inspires joy not violence
They (We) are pretty nice people. We're rational, scientifically inclined, reasonable, and empathetic. We're responsible for our actions, since we don't have any mystical ideology or supernatural deities to fall back on.

A vast majority of the music we listen mocks stereotypes, oppression, points out to hypocrisy, the real violence and aggression shown by the 'normal' masses.

We have cleaner track records. Some of us will dress up to appear aggressive and immoral, but we know you have pitchforks and judgments that you're waiting to hurl at us.

cyberjunkie··on Ask HN: Tricks to Avoid Eye Problems?
Been using PC screens since 92 and excessively since 95. I'm now 36 and my wife urged me to take an eye test with her because I've ignored my eyesight for so long.

She had a 25 minute session to get her glasses corrected. My time, 20 seconds into mine.

"Ermmm.. there's nothing wrong with his eyes"

My wife was visibly annoyed.

I have this 'terrible' habit of watching people walk by, sometimes stare out in the distance, looking at objects close and far all the time!
