cyanbane··on EA is File Snooping with the Origin Client
That is my guess also, it's actually probably just looking for their specific plug-in.

See slide 21 http://www.slideshare.net/DICEStudio/battlelog-building-scal...

That doesn't mean there isn't any leakage they technically can/can't see. No clue if any of that info gets phoned home.

cyanbane··on ‘A Threat to Internet Freedom’ NYT Op Ed on Net Neutrality
The article is a good read, but I think the video of this piece is worth its weight in gold. Very succinct, and has a great analogy with the toaster for people who might not be more familiar with what is going on.
cyanbane··on Kaspersky Cyberthreat real-time map
I feel like it is too quick/busy to be valuable other than to emphasize that there is "a lot" of this going on. After that though, not sure how good it is at conveying any other information that can be acted on. Certainly does look cool.
cyanbane··on The boy who stole Half Life 2 source code (2011)
I remember reading this article a few years ago. It was a very divisive article for me. Early 20s me would have felt bad for Gembe. Early 30s me felt bad for Valve.

I don't know where the cycle goes from here. Maybe the real wisdom is feeling bad for both?

cyanbane··on PirateBox 1.0
Would be neat to see a mesh-network of these running on old phones of which most people have 1 or 2 of at their house with a REALLY simple installer.

A few of these sprout up organically in locales and it would be like the BBS days of yore - ultimately it could lead to a larger geographical footprint of a "side-net".

cyanbane··on Ask HN: Idea Sunday
Not sure why I was down-voted on this. I assume someone is doing this and isn't looking for competition? ;)
cyanbane··on Ask HN: Idea Sunday
A service that sits on top of/aggregates sports clips and learns from the clips that I watch/view/like/share to determine if a sports clip is relevant for me, irregardless of source (even if just providing links to third parties).
cyanbane··on Hackers Can Mess With Traffic Lights to Jam Roads and Reroute Cars
I remember back in pre-internet days when BBS file directories were filed with ways to hack stop lights via pulses from a strobe light. Supposedly if you had the right pulse (and the cojones to have a pulsing strobe light on the front of your car) you could mimic the pulse in a siren and get reds to start a process immediately to switch to greens. Different locations had different pulse timings and people would find local ones and upload and aggregate them on some local phreaking BBS'.

Never tried this myself.

cyanbane··on Re: Facebook acquires Oculus, a letter of concern
I could very well be an anomaly, but I don't want to utilize a game device in which I have to associate my Facebook account (yes, I still have one). I don't care how fast you get it to market or how much lower it will cost. I don't want to login to anything with my FB credentials, there is too much personal information in the weight of that authorization. Way more than what I want to give to play a game (and I do love gaming).

And Yes, I have a hollow Hotmail account that is linked to my Xbox Live account - however I like to try to keep everything as segregated as possible. Its a constant battle to keep my information hubs segregated and this acquisition is one step closer to me just abstaining from certain tech that makes me cross hubs.

cyanbane··on Update on Julie Horvath's Departure
>> We know we have to take action and have begun a full investigation. While that’s ongoing, and effective immediately, the relevant founder has been put on leave, as has the referenced GitHub engineer.

>Pretty much a full admission that everything that Julie said is true.

Then I dub you Sir Bedemir, Knight of the Round Table.

cyanbane··on New Jersey Votes to Block Tesla’s Direct Sales
Whats to stop a NJ resident from going to NY to purchase a Tesla direct? Is their a a big financial penalty for doing so when registering? What is to stop a grey market of NY residents reselling them to NJ consumers if so? This makes no sense.
cyanbane··on The Face Behind Bitcoin?
I am not a big fan of the way the article was written, but I can definitely see how some may decry it as being news worthy.

I think the author should be ashamed for posting a picture of this man's house. No need for that and it doesn't add to the story after the description.

cyanbane··on Stick bomb
Is there a nomenclature around the patterns used? Anyone got a good site?
cyanbane··on For Runner With M.S., No Pain While Racing, No Feeling at the Finish
I wish the article would have asked her specifically if she felt that she was able to accomplish this because of the numbness from the M.S. or because of a new found motivation from the diagnosis. Something only she could answer. Either way, I hope her all the best in college.
cyanbane··on Microsoft Office Online
In proper MS marketing form I think there is a difference in two very similar products (and their names don't help the consumer at all). Office online is a web-based version of these popular apps (1:1 parity of OS software? I am not sure). There is also a $99 subscription model that allows you to install these apps for 5 computers (local OS software installs) + the benefits of these web apps + X gigs of One/Sky Drive + some Skype stuff.

I have been a happy subscriber to the $99 version (with OS apps) and I have been very happy with the price point. Have pretty much moved over to OneNote from EverNote over the past year and also love the ability to have a local install of Excel, but be able to edit inline on the web when needed.

cyanbane··on 'Dumb Starbucks' mystery: Who's behind the faux coffee front in Los Feliz?
I was going to say Banksy also, but he is a lot more understated (and artistic). http://www.woostercollective.com/post/the-village-pet-store-...
cyanbane··on Open for everyone
and Ghost which is self service and hosted.
cyanbane··on Amazon: The Everything Company
A few months ago I preordered a video game, upon receipt of the game months latter I also received an email that stated that Amz had lowered the price of the game in the time span of between my preorder and delivery of the game. They issued me a refund for the difference. It was something on the nature of .03, but impressive none the less.

A few months ago they went back through all the physical books I have ordered over the past 10 years and gifted me electronic versions of a subset of them.

They did the same with all my music purchased physically a few months previous.

I have never dealt with returns or the like with their customer service, but the channels in which they can deliver (physical + digital) is perfect for the time period we are currently in as physical mediums start to fall off.

cyanbane··on Hacker News down, unwisely returning HTTP 200 for outage message
I was 8% more productive today. Down-vote at will.
cyanbane··on ASK HN: What are your feelings if this was your app?
(Molhem Barakat/Reuters) is the credit for the intriguing image. I am intentionally linking to the site's image and not giving the context of the app user in the submission link. (note: it can be found here - http://blogs.wsj.com/photojournal/2013/11/19/photos-of-the-d... )
cyanbane··on The Coach Who Never Punts
I would think that would imply a heavy running game, which would break down your backs very quickly. (A whole lot of Option)

That being said, if you recruited for that it would be an interesting strategy.

cyanbane··on Everpix is Shutting Down
I tried them for about 3 months, was not a bad service. I had some issues with the methods in which they allowed for navigation of photos and how easy (or hard) it was to find a specific photo in a large collection. I ended up going back to Flickr. That being said, the display UI was great and I had hoped to see them pressuring other sites in the same space. Good luck to the team in whatever they decide to work on next.
cyanbane··on Why I moved to Miami
Do you find the opposite happens? Are you more calculated in snowy environs?
cyanbane··on Grand Theft Auto V Earns $800 Million in a Day
Not only PC, but I wonder if some people are waiting to see if this hits next gen consoles also.
cyanbane··on Children are suffering a severe deficit of play
I always return to the question of: "Is the shorter amount of time for outdoor non-directed play bad or just different for my kids (compared to my childhood)?".

This read failed to convince me of the former. That being said, it did convince me to pick up the author's book.

cyanbane··on It's A Terrible Time To Buy An Expensive House
Some very solid points about the market in general, but I wonder how several of these points (particularly the points about oversupply, baby boomers, etc.) apply to places like SF or Manhattan.

I was just coming to say the same thing. Solid advice, but housing has such metro-geographical differences, 40% of this doesn't line up with my area (Atlanta).

Edit: Had 60% went back and modified to 40% after reading again.

cyanbane··on Fuck Google Plus
Please note: I am actually a huge fan of Google+. I posted this because it shows real world emotions based on design decisions that sometimes developers/UX people shrug off. I personally hope that someone here has the power to help this user (and correct the original design problem?).
cyanbane··on Google Ventures Puts $258M Into Uber, Its Largest Deal Ever
Minus those 6 characters, of course. Those 6 characters mean a lot to everyone outside that bit of knowledge.
cyanbane··on Git commit allegedly from Satoshi embedded inside a Bitcoin transaction
Sorry I am not up on all the code intricacies with bit coin, but is this a way to publish a batch of text anonymously? Is that what the author is trying to show (a new communications channel) or is that something already known to the bitcoin community?
cyanbane··on Listen to AOL’s CEO Fire Employee in Conference Call With 1,000 people
I have on occasion used Patch (I live about 30 miles outside a metro area on the border of suburb vs farming land). I don't read the site, but instead read a twitter feed of the local corespondent. She happens to be fairly good at filtering good community news. I'll be keeping her in my twitter stream (assuming she isn't let go) but I will think about that recording every time I start to click a link to patch.com from her feed or anywhere. I will probably just query the main terms from her tweets in a Google news search from here on out if I want to know more. Somethings should be handled privately even when the opportunity may be presented publicly. There is no value to any point that was presented by firing someone in that manner.
