curtis3389··on EU DMA requirements have killed iPhone progressive web apps
So, do devs now need to definitively write-off PWAs as a failed experiment?

Many of the promises of PWAs have fallen short, so maybe this is just the final nail in the coffin.

curtis3389··on A South Carolina lawmaker is suing Instagram after his son died by suicide
It is certainly part of the problem, but it's not the root cause.

Yes. Access to and knowledge of firearms dramatically increases the lethality of suicide attempts.

But in this case, the kid was scammed for nudes and then blackmailed with them. Without easy access to guns, he could have survived the suicide attempt, but there's no guarantee.

The root cause has more to do with childhood, internet access, and maybe even parent-child relationships.

curtis3389··on British man appears in court over bomb joke sent in private message
Accused of public disorder because the government read his private message. Seems legit.

curtis3389··on The Ozempic Plateau
On the one hand, reducing obesity by 15-20% with a pill is pretty amazing. That certainly reduces negative outcomes and improves people's lives (and saves society money).

On the other hand, pharmaceutical companies only care about money and the chemistry is pretty straight-forward. They will continue making new drugs, and they will certainly release a "newer and better" version when their patents run out.

But, there will certainly be unintended consequences, and we still don't have a good understanding of the cause of the obesity epidemic.

curtis3389··on Examples of AI rip-offs making their way into Google News
Seriously, I'm surprised at how many devs haven't seen DuckDuckGo's bangs: https://duckduckgo.com/bangs

I use them all the time for work. !mdn for MDN, !dnab for .NET, !npm for NPM, !py3 for Python3 docs, !debman for Debian Manpages, !w for Wikipedia, !a for Amazon, !g for Google when you really need it.

I'm not affiliated with DDG; I just really, really love it.

curtis3389··on Get Out of Jail Cards, 2
Any officer that honors these cards is a complete scumbag not fit to wear the uniform.

Yes, I know what I'm implying.

curtis3389··on Chicago-area Tesla charging stations lined with dead cars in freezing cold
That's not what the article says. The article doesn't even state the problem.

The actual problem is that cold batteries have higher resistance, so these cold cars aren't charging. The owners need to run the heaters in their car for 30-45 minutes before they try to charge to be able to effectively charge at all.

curtis3389··on Periodic Table Gallery
Only kinda related:

Any one know where I could get a print of the Hyde Periodic Table?

I'd love a poster of a table that clearly shows the periodicity.

curtis3389··on People have been buried behind a Mississippi jail since 2016, attorney says
Man, it really seems like the police shouldn't be legally allowed to murder people.
curtis3389··on OpenAI deletes ban on using ChatGPT for "military and warfare"
It doesn't matter if you're being hypocritical. It's already nonsensical that a corporation can have a "sincerely held belief", so you might as well exploit the existing corruption and say "we're a sincerely Buddhist business and can't help with killing".
curtis3389··on OpenAI deletes ban on using ChatGPT for "military and warfare"
If Hobby Lobby can be Christian, any business can be Buddhist.
curtis3389··on Discord is laying off 17 percent of employees
If they set it in motion and say they'll stop it before it causes pain, they have no intention of stopping it. Sequestration in 2013 was a solution to a political problem. Nobody wants to be blamed.
curtis3389··on What is the proper cleanup when a tritium-powered exit sign has been broken?
Umm...no:

>Unwanted tritium exit signs may not be put into ordinary trash; they require special disposal. Tritium exit signs that are illegally put in ordinary landfills can break and contaminate the site. Owners of buildings are responsible for ensuring the safe operation and disposal of tritium exit signs.

curtis3389··on Peregrine Mission One: Critical Loss of Propellant
It seems rather apt that remains of both Arthur C. Clarke and Gene Roddenberry could find themselves drifting aimlessly through space. It makes me think of Frank Poole and the SS Botany Bay.
curtis3389··on Omea: The Integrated Information Environment by JetBrains (2005)
As others have noted, this is abandonware from 2005-ish.

But what were you imagining before you saw the screenshots? Is that something you'd use every day?

curtis3389··on Omea: The Integrated Information Environment by JetBrains (2005)
Yeah, this post needs a date added to it.

2.0 is from 2005.

curtis3389··on Toyota Only Plans to Make Enough Solid-State Batteries for 10k Cars in 2030
I'm still super happy to see solid-state batteries going into production. I wish it was faster than 20 years away from mass production, but progress is progress.
curtis3389··on We’re opening up access to Gov.uk forms
> We know this is not going to cover all routing needs though - in the future, we’d like to look at building branching (two separate sets of questions depending on the answer), and later down the line we might be able to expand our routing so you can add routes to more than one answer, and also routes based on a combination of answers.

I'm very interested how they build a UI for branching. Communicating branching conditions visually and clearly without just handing the user a programming language is a hard problem.

curtis3389··on Rhythm 0
Ingesting lead isn't healthy. From wikipedia: Lead is a devastating and persistent neurotoxin that accumulates in soft tissues and bones.
curtis3389··on In the LLM space, "open source" is being used to mean "downloadable weights"
Part of the benefit of FOSS & open source is that a curious user can inspect how something is made and learn from it. It matters that open weights are no different from a compiled program. Sure, you can always modify an executable's instructions, but there's no openness there.

Then there's the problems of the content of the training data, which parallel the dangers of opaque algorithms.

curtis3389··on I'm moving my projects off GitHub
This is probably unpopular, but I like these kinds of simple UI barriers to services I value. Also, this would certainly help with the Hacktoberfest problem.

There are plenty of other code hosting services. If you can't use Sourcehut, it's not for you.

curtis3389··on YouTube is blocking videos for users who block ads
That's fine. I'm not their market, and I'm sure that YouTube server cost are mind-boggling. I'll just use their platform even less as they turn it into cable TV. I pay or donate for the services I truly value, and all of those respect me enough not to try to mess with my head.

As others have said, ads are psychological warfare, and I want no part in that.

curtis3389··on $1 Billion That Nobody Wants (2011)

curtis3389··on YouTube Removes R.F. Kennedy Presidential Candidate Interview

curtis3389··on YouTube Removes R.F. Kennedy Presidential Candidate Interview
It got singled out in 2021 to help reduce mass deaths from the pandemic.
curtis3389··on Gitlab’s AI-assisted code suggestions
Okay, but how much are they charging?

It's getting really annoying how many sites force you into a trial just to find out how much it'll cost when it ends.

EDIT: Is this even positioned to compete with Copilot? What editors are there plugins for? There is surprisingly little information on the site.

curtis3389··on Water heavily polluted with PFAS in 15 km radius around Dordrecht chemical plant
I think you're right based on this article: https://www.cnn.com/2023/03/14/health/pfas-water-filters-wel...

PFAS looks to be removable with activated carbon or reverse osmosis filters.

EDIT: I think you're right that it's possible. idk if municipalities usually use these filters

curtis3389··on A trick to eliminate 2π (sometimes)
> review their math content with a screen reader before publishing

I second this for anything you put on the web. I opened the webapp I work on with a screen reader, and it was an incredibly valuable experience. You get to see your site from a different perspective, and various issues stand out like a sore thumb, and I honestly found fixing the accessibility issues extremely satisfying.
