I’m confused - it’s a waitlist?
csw-001··on Show HN: DeskSituation – Get inspired by the best workspaces
These are really cool - but I'd love to see an "honest" desk version... I remember working for a professor that had an office so filled with papers and items that when he said "put that on my desk" I literally couldn't find it.

In real life lots of us have desks covered in papers and chaos - and that's ok too!

csw-001··on Looking Back On Helm
That’s fair… I think what made it feel like a rug pull for me was that I erroneously thought that ongoing costs were being covered by the subscription fees. So I ended up with this useless box and a need to find a new email provider.

That said, while it worked it was absolutely awesome!

csw-001··on Looking Back On Helm
I was, and am, sad helm shutdown. That said, the fact that they rug pulled on a device I waited a year to get, then owned for less than two years, all while charging me an annual fee (that I thought was meant to make them sustainable) irks me.

> We wanted the ability to reference what parts of the document were used to generate an answer so you could fact-check the answers without sifting through thousands of pages by hand (or dealing with a black box).

100% this! Checking the original source isn’t just a feature, for me it’s a requirement for the research I do. I need to pin cite a concept/case/regulation/etc. - and “chatGPT said” doesn’t cut it. So cool. Can’t wait to give this a try.

csw-001··on News Minimalist – Only significant news
How hard would it be to let users tinker with this? Like could I have a set of sliders to go play with (customize) my scoring?

Any chance AI could be used to dedup the stories (like these are identical - only show higher source)?

csw-001··on People who use Notion to plan their whole lives
I find tracking things is a helpful (and relatively healthy) way to manage anxiety. It’s a total time vampire - but once I’ve made my lists of todos/sheets/Roam/Notion/BuJo/whatever and convinced myself I’m organized and in control, then I can get real work done free of nagging concern I’m missing something. I try to find a healthy balance, and my level of tracking varies with my mental health and stress. I’ve noticed that if I’m tracking nothing, things are bad. Likewise, if I’m tracking EVERYTHING, I’m spiraling and things are bad.
csw-001··on Joe Rogan Issues Warning After AI-Generated Version of His Podcast Surfaces
> There are few to no paths to a non-dystopian outcome currently.

Said Caveman 1 to Caveman 2 shortly after the discovery of fire. ;-)

csw-001··on Ask HN: What's the name of this concept related to surveillance
This was my first thought - originally described a prison designed in a way that a central guard tower can see into all the cells. Even if prisoners aren’t actually being watched, the theory is they behavior better because they know they could be being watched at any given moment.

Just happens to be this week’s 99% Invisible podcast is all about panopticon history!

csw-001··on Apple Music Classical
> Why would anyone want to listen to it then? what would be the point? The acoustic equivalent of a screensaver?

I would think they would want to listen to it for the same reason they listen to human generated music.

Is your thought here that AI generated art is not art? Is it the nature of the creator that determines the listeners enjoyment? If the music generated by a computer is indistinguishable from human made music, how can this be possible? Moreover, at what point would the computer generation be sufficient to shift it from art to “screensaver”? Would it be one simulated member of an otherwise human orchestra? Would it take 50%. If you can’t draw a line, doesn’t that further indicate it’s irrelevant?

csw-001··on Ask HN: Which courses (online or not) have had the greatest impact on you?
For me it was ConLaw as part of the first year of law school. It forced me to relearn US civics, and confront all the gray area that exists in trying to build and maintain a functional democracy. It expanded my view because it retaught periods of US history from a very different perspective than I'd encountered previously. Considering the interpretation of laws and policies through the lens of precedent and separation of powers made things far more complicated and interesting to me. I made peace with the fact that answers that start with "it's complicated,..." and "it depends,..." are generally better (if less satisfying) than ones that start with "clearly,..." or "obviously,...".
csw-001··on Show HN: Silly math games to make learning fun for K through 3rd grade
This is amazing because I just started doing exactly the same thing with my 1st grader with similar results. She loves it so much more than the terrible worksheets she comes home with.
csw-001··on How to Make Yourself into a Learning Machine (2020)
I agree. But, I think your comment about energy might be the key - that he might like doing it, and so it requires less energy. I have a lot of energy for some strange tasks that could easily be considered tiediuos by others (gardening for example). I think maybe the key is to figure out what you have so much energy for that it doesn't feel like work, instead of chasing somebody else's happy.
csw-001··on Show HN: A pen that digitizes handwriting on any paper
This is really neat - any plans to offer a fountain pen addition? I much prefer the easy glide of a fountain pen.
csw-001··on The end of the high school essay
My inclination would be to actively require students to use AI in drafting. It seems plausible to me that successful work in the future will require AI collaboration. The skill we are looking for is apparently output based (like much of the work we turn in for pay later in life - we get paid for output, not process) - getting to the final product with AI shouldn't just be rewarded, it should a skill that is actively taught. It's a tool kids need to learn how to be good with, akin to "googling", it has its limitations that kids should learn first hand.

Edit: typos... because this wasn't written by AI...

csw-001··on Newsraft: feed reader with ncurses user interface
Newsblur has been suckless for years.
csw-001··on Apple headset leak reveals new details and confirms earlier rumors
I agree, but this is literally the world we already live in. On my coffee break walk I past 12 Amazon-owned front door cameras alone. I know there are pictures of me on Facebook , even though I’ve never had an account there…

I don’t disagree at all with your privacy concerns - but I disagree that it will be a problem. I think the population of people that care about not being on other people’s cameras enough to complain and make those people stop using their camera-laden devices is very, very small.

csw-001··on Ask HN: What RSS Reader do you use in 2022?
Switched to NewsBlur when google reader was shut down… It’s so much better than I could have imagined GReader ever becoming. Used it daily for years!
csw-001··on Ask HN: Who else is working/on call over Christmas?
Thank you! Have a Merry Christmas.
csw-001··on Htmx in a Nutshell
This is so true. I have two real hobbies - web dev and wood working. One thing that makes me chuckle is the different takes the communities have on tools. In the web dev people constantly argue about how there is one best tool!!! The wood workers make an art form out of collecting the most tools possible, because each tool has a job and the person who dies with the most tools wins.

(Edited for typos)

csw-001··on Air Marshals Will Refuse Orders to Go to the Border, Prefer First Class Cabins
I thinks that’s the key though - the argument is that the program should be shutdown, not that they should all be put on border patrol duty… assigning them to a random alternative post is going to make recruiting good new folks really hard.
csw-001··on Air Marshals Will Refuse Orders to Go to the Border, Prefer First Class Cabins
This article very clearly articulates at length that there is a problem hiring (and one can assume, retaining) good Air Marshals. Seems to me that randomly reassigning them to border duty is highly unlikely to fix that problem. The premises here don’t reach the stated conclusion.
csw-001··on On the Gift of Longhand
Wow! That’s amazing. I bet you’ve got good handwriting and penmanship habits.
csw-001··on On the Gift of Longhand
Nope. “Decades” here is roughly 25 years. I picked one up in middle school because I was going through a “retro” phase. I no long where vintage shop fedoras (I still maintain they are cool though), but I never went back once I started writing with a fountain pen. I started with this neat looking waterman they sold in the gifts section of Office Depot. I still write mostly waterman Florida Blue Ink… I was in that 50/50 era of laptop use v. hand writing in high school and even in college people mostly seemed to start on paper before typing final copies up in Word. That might be a contributing factor. I can’t think and organize without a pen in hand . Closest I’ve come is the Remarkable tablet - but I still find myself using a real fountain pen daily.
