crookshanked··on Down the Rabbit Hole: The world of estranged parents' forums (2015)
Your second paragraph definitely is a nail on the head moment. It is something I try and look past often but am hyper aware of it when I'm with my parents and they call to "talk". I'll have to ask them about who their trustee is. Thanks!

This is definitely something I could see myself being concerned about happening. Any advice RE: lawyers/how to handle the siblings trying to bypass the will? I've been told a living trust is something to consider. Thoughts?

Wow, thanks for making Hamachi. Brings back memories of playing things like Starcraft and a few other games with a non local friend.
crookshanked··on Ask HN: Non-cloud-based home cameras
Though Anker is a chinese company. Definitely review the privacy policy and such.

Arlo has a solid stance on privacy but is definitely cloud based unless you get one of the older ones with a base station. Their products are also made in china though.

You could also do the whole Raspberry Pi Cam thing.

crookshanked··on Drinking year-old eggnog to put science to the test (2014)
It should be... I love the concept of seasonal mustards. Care to share what recipe you landed on?

Interesting to consider that bit about the USDA and home pasteurizing eggs. I do a lot of ice cream/frozen custard style things and have used raw yolks before after using low temperature cooking via immersion circulator to "pasteurize" them first. I usually refer to Douglas Baldwin for a majority of this stuff. http://www.douglasbaldwin.com/sous-vide.html Though the first article that popped up on the search has some good reading on it from what I'm seeing. https://www.streetsmartkitchen.com/how-to-pasteurize-eggs-so...

His books in general are an interesting thing to pick up. When the student is ready the master reveals themselves.

Both penjelly and pgruenbacher mention great points. Personally feeling very similar to OP as well.

The things I need to do better are sleep better and exercise more.

Counseling helps address some of these feelings but only go so far to motivate one to take care of themselves...

crookshanked··on Ask HN: What tiny purchases have disproportionately improved your life?
Love my Joule. Been using it for years now it feels like for an amazing amount of things. Also the size and waterproof aspect of it is unbeatable. Good customer service too now that breville owns em.
crookshanked··on Ask HN: What tiny purchases have disproportionately improved your life?
Light sensor outlet covers! They're pretty handy for walking around the house at night and not stubbing a toe.

Thanks for posting. I love these kind of things. Just wish there was a cost effective way to get them printed up.

crookshanked··on Ask HN: What's been the best usage for QR code apart from restaurants menus?
Back in 2012 I tried the QR code on business card to download a vcard bit... it did not really garner any attention which was unfortunate. Seemed brilliant at the time. Could be I just was not an interesting individual though.

Restaurant wise it definitely is annoying when there is a QR code for a menu, another for the beer menu, and another for the specials. Even better when the printed out QR code is cut off and doesn't load correctly.

Heavenly Body Golden Wheat by Wellbeing Brewing Co is one of the most "accurate" flavors I've had for a NA Beer. Also look at curious elixirs.

Can anyone elaborate further on how this would be used? Is this the kind of thing you would load via an Ad? Or hijack a site and add it?
crookshanked··on Ask HN: What Skills to Acquire in 2020?
Seconding immersion circulator as a purchase. Joule by chefsteps is nice, and small enough to fit in a drawer. Entirely app controlled though and has visual doneness guides and recipes. Helps you get the feel for it for sure. Best part is you can cook from frozen too so if you forget to pull something out to defrost you can just add a little time to the bath.
crookshanked··on How “randomizers” are breathing new life into old games
Great topic, Check out Vinny from Vinesauce for a lot of good randomizer examples. He usually plays Zelda II around this time of year. Even watching someone else play such a game can inspire users to return to them. If you search around there is a website that has a big list of randomized games out there.

crookshanked··on The Factorization of RSA-240
What is going on with the URL? Also this user submitted something along this RSA-240 factoring twice. Seems really phishy that they're using a .exe in the url.
crookshanked··on Ask HN: What to do after the workday?
Serving size 1 - Coming from Southeast US there is a rise in craft micro-breweries in many of the more 'hip' cities. These smaller locations tend to have groups of regulars who tend to know each other and provide such a 'service'. That being said I do agree with the thought of this phenomenon moving to the internet, things like city based slack chats work decently for this and these groups work to create physical meetups as well.
crookshanked··on Ask HN: What to do after the workday?
Freelance, find new recipes that you may enjoy and make interesting dinners. Also the obligatory third place - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Third_place

Thanks for sharing this. I enjoyed the line of discussion regarding procrastination. Helped get my mind organized so reckon it worked... Couldn't access the play store link. Scrolling up/down wasn't as easy as I'd like.
