crimony··on Atomic Clocks
I like that both 0:00 and 24:00 exist. If you say "midnight, August 12", do you mean at the start or the end of the day? There might be a convention, but I don't know it so others probably don't either. With 0:00 and 24:00 and a date, you can disambiguate a time precisely.

Microsoft Word automatically converts dashes to em dashes as soon as you hit space at the end of the next word after the dash.

If I remember correctly the military / aerospace shy away from this spec because the connector with the pins is on the backplane, with the sockets on the cards.

So if you incorrectly insert a card and bend a pin you're in trouble.

VPX has the sockets on the backplane so avoids this issue, if you bend pins you just grab another card from spares.

This may have changed since I last looked at it.

Telecoms industry definitely seem to favour TCA though.

crimony··on Show HN: I spent 6 years building a ridiculous wooden pixel display
You have four sides to each pixel cube, have you considered black, white and two grey levels?

I suspect it because with a single piece axle the torsion forces trying to twist the wheels into negative camber are taken by the axle and the forces on the two wheels negate each other, leaving the frame to only have to deal with vertical linear force.

It's worse only if AI turns out to be of high value.

In that case only large companies that can afford to license training data will be dominant.

crimony··on Are colonoscopies worth it?
They use Midazolam in Australia, which is great as it's very sedating and causes anterograde amnesia, so you don't remember a thing.
crimony··on Are colonoscopies worth it?
Honestly the picolax part of the prep is okay for me, I hate the low fibre diet of the prior 3 days. White bread, boiled skinless potatoes and chicken breast. Nothing with any colour or texture. Blech.
crimony··on Are colonoscopies worth it?
My dad was also colourblind, and it was only when my mum saw the blood in the toilet that he got tested (at 57). Stage 4 metastatic bowel cancer. He got 8 more years of life but I wouldn't say they were all good years. He died nearly 20 years ago now. Mum is still in good health at 81. I'm 53 now and have had 5 yearly colonoscopies since I was 35, I'm not taking any chances. I don't mind the prep, and don't feel a thing or remember anything about the procedures themselves.

Orthodox Christians in the Southern Hemisphere already celebrate Christmas in summer, as do other Christians.

crimony··on Agile and the long crisis of software
I can't help being amused by this comment, which seems to to be arguing:

"This isn't a One-True-Scotsman fallacy, a true One-True-Scotsman fallacy would be <insert narrower definition>, your claim about this fallacy is fallacious"

I'm pretty sure Agile, Scrum and Retrospectives have multiple published definitions, both broad and narrow.

crimony··on Facebook to block news on Australian sites after new law, riling lawmakers
I believe this question has been addressed and clarified as limiting the moderation of content to the news organisations' own Facebook pages only, not a general ability to moderate discussion of their articles posted elsewhere by private citizens.

I'm regularly reminded of the "Alan's editorializing" commentary in the "units.txt" file, which contains gems such as:

[in candela := cd]: "I think the candela is a scam, and I am completely opposed to it. Some good-for-nothing lighting "engineers" or psychologists probably got this perceptually-rigged abomination into the whole otherwise scientific endeavor...

...What an unbelievably useless and stupid unit."

[and in Hertz := Hz]: "Here is YET ANOTHER place where the SI made a really stupid definition...

... Either way, if I ever develop a time machine, I'm going to go back and knock both groups' heads together. At a frequency of about 1 Hz. Or better yet, strap them to a wheel and tell them I'm going to spin one group at a frequency of 1 Hz, and the other at 1 radian/s and let them try to figure out which one of those stupid inconsistent definitions means what. Hint: It'll depend on which time period I do it in, I guess, thanks to their useless inconsistent definition changes."
