crate_barre··on The tech sector teardown is more catharsis than crisis
Someone needs to explain to me why our tech companies are so tied to interest rates. Are VCs borrowing with home mortgage equity??
crate_barre··on Tech bubbles are bursting all over the place
The issue is that when tech companies look reasonable, everyone and their mother buys in until they look unreasonable.

There is nothing else to believe in. We have one growth industry in this world and it’s tech. It’s not a bubble, it’s the economy running on one lung. You can deflate it and hold your breath, but once you need oxygen, you are going to fill it up rapidly from holding your breath that long.

The same is true for housing. We need other viable industries.

crate_barre··on Japan's population falls by record 644,000 to 125.5M in 2021
No no no, don’t say that. Your water, roads, sewage, and electricity have not been universally solved. It has nothing to do with better opportunities. It’s a shithole you guys are not committing to fixing.

Why can’t you guys just make India not suck and live there?
crate_barre··on Knowledge is like a house of cards
Better to yell when the car diverts west when it really needs to turn south immediately to get to the destination. Otherwise you end up all the way west and that’s the biggest waste of time of all. This is where being friendly is not optimal (or even correct).

How do you differentiate what you are saying versus what people have always said about reading comic books all day, or playing video games all day, watching tv, listening to certain music, spending all your time on the internet, etc?

Life is boring as fuck. It really is. It takes a lot to keep a human captivated.

crate_barre··on Fed lifts rates by half point, starts balance sheet reduction June 1
I think it’s important to point out that this is what the Fed has been waiting for since 2008. We needed inflation. Now this debt gets washed away.

Merry Christmas y’all, not only did we bail Wallstreet out in 2008, we’re now bailing out the bail out with inflation lol.

And we’re too stupid to even realize it. They have no intention of curbing inflation until the debt is handled.

crate_barre··on IBM's Asshole Test
That’s one way to look at it. The other way is to determine confidence. Either way, these are character traits and filtering for one or the other is unfortunate. Teams should mimic villages, everyone is there. Everyone. The shy, the arrogant, the nice, etc. There will be flawed people in a village, but that is a village. Not utopia.
crate_barre··on Microsoft 3D Movie Maker Source Code
Fair enough. I’m hoping one day they just make some simple mo cap devices that let you control an in-game model and one person just uses a in-game camera like a FPS. Many of these game engines look good enough if you can just get a few people together to act out scenes and do camera work.

crate_barre··on Square-Enix sells all of its Western game studios and their games to Embracer
It was believed Square’s choice to put Final Fantasy on PlayStation killed the Sega Saturn, and dented N64 adoption. But this is console war mythos, not sure if anyone really dug into it.

The power of Square once upon a time may have been truly legendary, but who knows for sure?

crate_barre··on Maslow never proposed a pyramid
the lower layers are absolutely necessary for the next layer up.

So to counter the idea, all you really need to do is find examples of self esteem and self actualization before achieving the physical needs.

crate_barre··on Ask HN: Why is the James Webb Space Telescope project going so well?
I think they might have people that actually care about the vision (no pun intended) of what that telescope means. That kind of alignment isn’t always possible on many endeavors.

We’re basically making something to look at God.

crate_barre··on Deutsche Bank whistleblower found dead in LA's Lincoln Park
Great point. The crux of the pure physical addiction, separate from the psychological groundwork that leads you to it, is that you just need more and more of that stuff.

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is up to 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine.

^ Imagine needing more and more of that stuff to get your usual high. You’re dead.

crate_barre··on Rocket Mortgage to trim 8% of workforce as home-loan market shrinks
Housing legislation is something that few politicians have been talking about in the last decade. We have spent a lot more time talking about healthcare, and student debt, but not the number one financial factor which is housing. You really can’t leave it alone with legislation every 20 something years, you sort of have to keep evaluating and reevaluating it. Otherwise while we let the current systems in place fester, what you get is side effects that we simply can’t address until decades later (e.g Canada banning foreign buyers, ok great, the damage has already been done).

Many of the investor class had the first mover advantage where they simply bought a house before everyone else and can now leverage those gains into more investment/rental income property. Couple that with foreign investment. Couple that with home equity and margin loans. Couple that with the private sector collecting houses. Couple that with mortgage fraud where people don’t pay investor taxes and continuously buy homes as a first time home owner. Couple that with with all kinds of things. I know a home owner that owns multiple homes, stopped paying taxes on one and had a tax lien discharge. They go on to sell that other home at profit and pay off the IRS. They never took the hit on their first home in any way. Multiple ownership is a problem, period.

We finally end up to where we are today and the only powerful entity that modulates this is the Fed, but not a single politician is taking up the battle over the fact that the multiple home ownership is killing our society at the moment.

crate_barre··on Ask HN: How much of your monthly net income goes towards rent or mortgage?
Edit: For those of you with very favorable percentages, if you don’t mind, what part of the world/states are you in, and how much is remote work enabling this?
crate_barre··on Ask HN: CNN+ Software Engineers
What is everyone’s age in this thread? It sounds like you are all kids.

A site like CNN+ is using a third party vendor for their video streaming and everything else. The people you are reaching out to are the Rajeshs and Srinis of the world. There is no serious innovation going on.

The tech stack is India, Java, shitheads in Atlanta, and a white hipster douche that does JavaScript and Rust in Williamsburg, practices leetcode on the side due to napoleonic complex and Adderral, hopes to get to a faang one day.

This isn’t groundbreaking stuff.

crate_barre··on twitter/the-algorithm
Twitter is mostly an infrastructure operation imho, someone school me. It’s a scale-based problem space, how do you get all these tweets out in real time at minimum, and at best, how do you do some level of topic bucketing on top of it.

crate_barre··on U.S. interest rates have soared everywhere but savings accounts
The monthly payment of 28%-38% of gross monthly pay is harder to get to with the rising interest rate and rising home prices. You’d be looking at over 50% of your net take home pay per month (yes, over half your months paycheck, especially in high cost of living areas). They are fucking pricing everyone out other than investors or existing home owners that can tap into home equity.

And rent is nearing 1900 nationwide. How is that even reality?

If people just started killing landlords and investors I personally wouldn’t give a fuck (I’m kidding, not advocating this, but that’s how bad actors these animals are).

crate_barre··on Ask HN: Is Hybrid Working a Ruse?
Non-remote work is the same as hearing a low ball offer in negotiations. I’ll keep looking unless I’m desperate. And if I am desperate, I’ll leave as soon as I’m not, as is with tradition.
crate_barre··on The chaotic collapse of CNN+
It’s the median, not the average. And I think for CNN the median is definitely lower than that, but for FoxNews it’s about right.
crate_barre··on The Onion has been permanently banned from Twitter
Trey Parker:

“It’s tricky and it’s really tricky now as satire has become reality,” Parker said. “We were really trying to make fun of what was going on [last season] but we couldn’t keep up. What was actually happening was way funnier than anything we could come up with. So we decided to just back off and let [politicians] do their comedy and we’ll do ours.”
