crate_barre··on Ask HN: What's your personal pet theory on how humanity manages to end itself?
Starvation was highly scaleable tactic the Nazis used. Just pile people up and let them starve and also freeze to death (another scaleable tactic).

Food shortages could cause this but it would also cause riots/conflict before anything. Lack of heating could also do it. It won’t be an extinction level event, just a culling.

I foresee that before all else. It won’t take much, just sudden infrastructure shocks.

Everything in that article can be done with css believe it or not.
crate_barre··on Ask HN: Why hasn’t Putin put all his chips into Odessa?
C’mon, he can sit on the Black Sea and pummel Odessa into the ground like Mariupol (Maybe that’s the warning?). No No-fly zones means he doesn’t even have to risk a ground invasion. Just do it the old fashioned American way of bombing off carriers, with your nearest port being Crimea, which he owns.
crate_barre··on Things to know about raising debt for startups
You ever try to buy a house? The loan you get means jackshit to the lender. Your loan is going to get bucketed and sold off into large funds. Those funds in the aggregate hold value. No one really cares if you, who you are, your house, etc, are a particularly good investment in the macro scale.

I suspect it’s similar in VC funding. You are just a company that sorta fits a conventional loan. In the macro sense, just a few need to hit, but they could care less about your special little company. You are packaged to investors.

I imagine a world where the government buys startup backed securities to prop up the tech sector, in which case you’ll see even more startups. Right now it’s any Joe Schmo with money that act like the Fed.

That way everyone and their mother can grab a loan for a house and a company, it’s a macabre form of socialism, uniquely American - so long as you make the monthly payments. Truthfully If I was a lender I’d have all my startups go public within a year and start paying back the debt via cashing out their stock, because that’s way more predictable than hoping your company becomes profitable or useful.

crate_barre··on Ask HN: Why hasn’t Putin put all his chips into Odessa?
Your point is countered by him sparing Odessa.
crate_barre··on Tesla revenues grow 81% from last year
His comments on inflation are interesting. Elon is not right about everything, but he usually gets the big picture right.

Without side tracking the discussion too much, how is everyone so sure the rise in inflation is what it is? Wouldn’t the rise in prices be more attributable to supply shocks of the last two years? We know housing is shocked due to inventory, along with cars due to semiconductors, and general electronics (still can’t click buy-it-now on a PS5 at MSRP, still near $1k). How can this be inflation? How are they sifting supply and demand out of the equation?

Inequality has been so high for so long, that I can’t imagine even 10 trillion dollars of global money shifting the pendulum in the other direction like this. Most people didn’t put that stimulus money into assets, it should have technically vanished (aaaaaand it’s gone - South Park) into consumerism.

crate_barre··on How can I get my boyfriend to stop digging his tunnel?
There’s also strong shades of non-conformity and anti authoritarianism in it. Who is this GF? His mom? Who is she gossiping to (Reddit), the nosy neighbor? Her annoying friends?

He should really stop digging that tunnel giiiirl

Fuck you I’m building the tunnel.

crate_barre··on How can I get my boyfriend to stop digging his tunnel?
The “direct” payoff is an abstraction. Follow the code. It’s so you get money to pay for food, shelter and piece of mind, possibly status. Somewhere further up Mazlow’s hierarchy is enjoyment.

Regardless, I consider anyone operating in humanity to be mentally ill in general. It’s just, how much of your mental illness impacts the rest of us, and how much of it is abstracted away so we can quickly label it harmless (mostly to the rest of us).

Digging a tunnel the closest shit to “ain’t bothering me” as it’s going to get.

Now, if your nonsense pushes you to monopolize industries and abuse labor for profit, yeah, now your mental illness is on blast.

———

Few would consider that the GF is mentally ill, so obsessed with how it would look to others, so obsessed with how it’s non conforming.

crate_barre··on How can I get my boyfriend to stop digging his tunnel?
Dude, you have to understand you work 8 hours a day. It’s just as absurd.

Dig the fucking tunnel.

crate_barre··on Ask HN: Chat with Direct Message in a Webapp
Matrix or XMPP server. There’s plenty of clientside JS apis.

I’m sure Firebase can do it too.

There’s a ton of options, you won’t go wrong.

crate_barre··on The absurd complexity of server-side rendering
The browser doesn’t even have modern JS. Well, I mean it does, but for awhile it didn’t. We consider modern history to be anything past 1815. So in web terms, if you had to section it, modern web history is like maybe 2010 onwards? In those years we transpiled new Ecmascript to old ecmascript.

So, nothing is stoping us from tranpiling Python to new or old ecmascript.

But, I think you’ll see that it won’t solve much. You are just turning one turd into a lesser turd. The problem is fundamentally deeper. The browser and web server tech was not built for app development. That’s the bottom line.

crate_barre··on The tech bubble that never burst
In a sense, most of the so called bubbles occurring right now are due to a lack of tech and innovation. The issue isn’t that Home prices are inflated, the issue is our most innovative solution for home ownership is credit hand outs. The Finance sector is not innovative enough to solve this. We’d need to think about building denser cities and pragmatic modern housing. Affordable housing doesn’t have to mean “middle or low income in certain area”. These are old industries of finance and old progressive ideas that simply are not disruptive enough.

We’re starving for innovation.

crate_barre··on Ask HN: Take the easy job or the hard job?
You should choose based on how many months your wife can support you if you decide your choice did not work out. No upside job is always stupid, so contemplate the one with upside but have a frank discussion with your wife on what the risks are and how much runway you would need to get back to your version of a typical job if your adventure doesn’t come to fruition.
crate_barre··on The tech bubble that never burst
There is enough vacant housing in China to house Spain. Prices are going to drop, probably.

It’s better to look at this from China’s vantage point. Truly, enough housing to house Spain is not enough. Perhaps for Spain it is, but we’re talking about housing China - 1bn people.

As for tech, I don’t think we’re even close to saturating the globe with technology. We’re in such an infancy that we literally need something like Starlink to get everyone connected.

We’re nowhere close to it.

crate_barre··on The tech bubble that never burst
Except that thesis is just wrong when your mother uses Facebook, Google, Amazon, Apple, Uber, and the kids pay for Netflix (oh shit, your mother too), and their bosses buy SaaS apps for the team.

Yeah, it’s not a place to “park” money. That idea at this point sounds like conspiracy theory stuff.

crate_barre··on Ask HN: Why is there so much snark on HN?
Everyone’s just bored. It’s intellectual flirting. Except there’s no fucking, but maybe a few good ideas cum out of it.
crate_barre··on Vancouver proposes 10k-dollar annual fee for gas stations without EV charging
Naive question, but aren’t we talking about installing an electrical outlet essentially? Some of these options look like they plug into a wall:

https://www.amazon.com/MUSTART-Portable-Charger-Electric-Cha...

Bare minimum the apartment building can work to install wall outlets in the garage, or very long extension cords.

Video: https://www.amazon.com/vdp/006d5bc8225646d086bb5afa191e52d8?...

That’s not asking for a lot from a building.

crate_barre··on No one knows why the most used spacecraft propulsion system works
The main problem with Twitter blogs is that it’s like the scariest infinite-scroll. On a regular blog post you can get a sense of how long it is and just about where someone should be hammering home a point. But one tweet after the other feels like an infinite lazy loaded slideshow. I get no sense if I mostly got the point of it or if I should keep scrolling.

It has a chance of becoming an insane dark pattern, especially if they jam ads in between.

crate_barre··on Ask HN: Which movie(s) best represent hacker culture for you?
Office Space.
crate_barre··on Why is there so much self-help featured on Hacker News?
If you remember when book stores were still around, you would have noticed that the self-help section was one of the largest sections in the store (compared to say, Philosophy, which arguably has much deeper ideas on the human condition). YouTube is filled with self-help. You can’t get through a Joe Rogan podcast without self improvement advice.

It can be exhausting for sure. It’s a mutation of self-pity, which is a mutation of self-absorption, if we had to root cause analyze this.

To put it simply, we have a very vain and narcissistic society at this point. We can’t clearly pin point if this is a modern advent or truly an everlasting dynamic of humanity (has it always been here, and will it always be here?). In the contemporaneous, all we can do is contemplate if it’s particularly worse right now, but, that in itself is … also self-absorption.

I think people who have energy for conspiracy ideas should find a healthy outlet like fiction. Similarly, those who are in the higher end of the self-absorption spectrum (most everyone I’ve met), should find a healthy place to put that like Philosophy. Contemplate existence and Cogito, ergo sum. The low level “how do I, me, and past me and future me, continue being me and finding meaning in me, myself and I, and feel good about it”.

Overall, it’s a form of egotism to recommend such people seek therapy. That’s putting one of the most common human traits on a pedestal. As in, your vanity is soooo serious that you need clinical professional help - lol. I don’t know how many times I’ve seen that ridiculous recommendation for run of the mill stuff. Half the reason these things become compulsive pattern thoughts is because we validate it.

Take a Philosophy 101 Couesera course over a glass of wine, and laugh about it. I promise you the “I find no meaning at work” questions will become hilarious soon enough.

And there it is, the grand hypocrisy. I just ultimately gave some self-help advice.

crate_barre··on What does “shitty job” mean in the low-skill, low-pay world?
It’s possible, sure.
crate_barre··on What does “shitty job” mean in the low-skill, low-pay world?
Let me shock you by saying in some of these cities groups of people easily take out a 2500-3k rental. Either families or groups of workers.
crate_barre··on What does “shitty job” mean in the low-skill, low-pay world?
Enumerate the STEM jobs that won’t create a life for you.

Go. To. Medical. School.

Stop thinking a Bachelors in STEM is enough. It’s a not a bet. The literally moronic other majors half of you pick is a bet. I’ve seen all of your resumes and there is literally totally dumbfounded major choices.

In fact, I’ll go as far as to say web development will create less of a life for you long term than most other STEMs. People in serious STEM majors just don’t want to put the work into post-bachelors education and cop out. We all know this.

crate_barre··on What does “shitty job” mean in the low-skill, low-pay world?
A VPS is $5 bucks. I described $5 like an investment. If $5 is as my investment into my future, what was the price of my food? Not exactly Doordash or Extra Value Meals at McDonald’s every night.

Inference.

crate_barre··on What does “shitty job” mean in the low-skill, low-pay world?
I would urge you to reconsider the group you are talking to. Many many tech people come from immigrants families that were not born into any kind of wealth at all.
crate_barre··on What does “shitty job” mean in the low-skill, low-pay world?
I’ve somewhat shifted to the no-shampoo cult.

crate_barre··on What does “shitty job” mean in the low-skill, low-pay world?
Your guess is wrong then. I’m more of a person that has been at the upside and downside of things. I know what it’s like to just need the paycheck. But I never looked at it like that, it was mostly a paycheck to create the opportunity via stability to evolve another path. In that case, holistically, that dead-end job had a purpose for creating financial groundwork (once upon a time for me it was literally to buy some server hosting or a domain name - yeah, that’s how broke).
crate_barre··on What does “shitty job” mean in the low-skill, low-pay world?
Any job that doesn’t holistically build your skill set (antithetical to a career). As in, the money is irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. If you stock Shampoo on a shelf, and you can’t flip that into something useful, it’s a worthless job.

It’s better to get paid $0 being in the right field for a bit than actually being paid in the wrong path. It’s negative money unless you are using it to pivot into the right path via education.

Which brings me to an aside, College for many people is a good example of a dead-end job. Not only did you not get paid, but someone also took your money wasting your time down a trail that many people pivot out of (your Classics majors that switch to Dev, congrats on paying to be led astray for 4 years).

But software can also be a dead end job if you chased the money and went off the trail of the path you should have kept investing in.

All this shit takes vision honestly.

How much of the profit do you get from your company? Pennies I’m sure, you are just okay with it because it’s more pennies than other penny makers, but you are not taking home close to the value add on your labor.
