cramjabsyn··on Show HN: Use an old tablet as an extra monitor
Macos has the built in with sidecar. Just attach an ipad and select it as the external display
cramjabsyn··on What is your “Orange Juice Test” question?
And cream is not coffee but here we are
cramjabsyn··on Enabling IPv6 support for IPv4-only apps on Linux
6 to 4 is pretty easy with socat but comes with the downsides of being a userspace l3 proxy
cramjabsyn··on What is your “Orange Juice Test” question?
My go to orange juice question is pulp or no pulp
cramjabsyn··on FTC sues Amazon for illegally maintaining monopoly power
This is a tangent but the consumerism that leads to people spending $200 instead of digging a hole in the ground for a fire pit is part of the issue.
cramjabsyn··on Vintage Apple
Whats hilarious is Apple support considers an i7/16GB/1TB mbp “vintage” too
cramjabsyn··on Ask HN: Should I get a stand-up desk?
When I had a job with lots of meetings I would raise my desk up to standing height a lot, but I find it uncomfortable for focus/flow work like coding. So I would raise/lower the desk depending on the task.

I'd say if you do a fair amount of meetings give it a try.

Ikea makes a powered model that's decent and cheap. The power bricks sometimes fail (they are essentially laptop bricks) but they are warrantied for something like 10 years.

cramjabsyn··on National Film Board of Canada
Their “soceitas x tape” is a great listen as well. Especially the unidentified tracks which are presumably unreleased songs of theirs.
cramjabsyn··on Injured person reportedly dies after Cruise cars block first responders
The good news is that after replacing the human drivers with cruise cars the number of cruise cars struck by cruise cars would be at an all time low.
cramjabsyn··on America has the world’s safest air travel but sucks at car safety
Lacking rail networks in the US must play a role in putting more people (and trucks) on the road and increasing severity of crashes
cramjabsyn··on T-Mobile to cut about 7% of workforce, mostly corporate roles
Ship what exactly?
cramjabsyn··on Nintendo DS cameras are the best lo-fi photo trend
I’d always attributed the lofi music videos as a post demarco thing, diy indie from the 2010s
cramjabsyn··on Every phone should be able to run personal websites
A linux distro targeting old apple handsets would be excellent for this. Even it only EOL devices were supported itd still be very useful to have a lightweight arm server with battery backup.
cramjabsyn··on I went to 50 different dentists: almost all gave a different diagnosis (1997)
Sadly there is no conspiracy needed. The for profit health care model is a significant contributor.

Dentists are also business people, and there are strong monetary incentives for them to upsell.

That's not to defend the behavior, but I think we should acknowledge the problem is systemic and that a non profit healthcare approach would be more appropriate for the vast majority of situations.

cramjabsyn··on IPv6 Is A Disaster (but we can fix it)
> And while he claimed he's going IPv6-only, he set up public access via IPv4. That won't convince anyone to switch or upgrade.

This is the major flaw. Sites can't go ipv6-only. In reality we will have parallel ipv4/6 networks in place until the wheels fall off

cramjabsyn··on AirPrint with Cups
And to be clear… the problem is transparently supporting airprint to every printer on every network…?
cramjabsyn··on Goto in Bash (2012)
what have you done…
cramjabsyn··on AirPrint with Cups
https://github.com/SickHub/docker-cups-airprint
cramjabsyn··on AirPrint with Cups
You can run all this in a container, in fact there are already pre-built containers to do it
cramjabsyn··on Systemd auto-restarts of units can hide problems from you
Worth looking into prometheus. in basic form that'd be gathering metrics from https://github.com/prometheus-community/systemd_exporter on your hosts, and configure alerting in grafana or prometheus alertmanager to notify when a threshold is exceeded
cramjabsyn··on Systemd auto-restarts of units can hide problems from you
> The reasonable way to notice is to have alerts for any unexpected restarts. Relying on noticing intermittent service disruption is bound to fail.

I'd argue that unexpected restarts should alert beyond a threshold. Alerting on every occurrence is too noisy. If an individual unit failure causes a service disruption architecture improvements are needed.

cramjabsyn··on Systemd auto-restarts of units can hide problems from you
Ideally systemd metrics are being gathered and notifications are set up in a way that bring attention to services that are being restarted excessively
cramjabsyn··on Ask HN: How do you find clothing?
Sold out of black tee shirts, is this a joke
cramjabsyn··on IMAX emulates PalmPilot software to power Oppenheimer’s 70 mm release
The google garden isn’t much better
cramjabsyn··on Boston mayor announces residential conversion program for office buildings
Oh no not office suites being gone forever.

Don’t worry they’ll rebuild. They always rebuild.

cramjabsyn··on Shortening the Let's Encrypt chain of trust
Its not even 10 years old. The hardware is aging but the only reason its “outdated” is due to a software lifecycle forced by one or more corporate entities. These are an obvious tool to force sales/upgrades.

I’d be nice if this community weren’t so quick to defend planned obsolescence, especially at a 2-3 year pace.

cramjabsyn··on I stopped buying new laptops (2020)
And gives some users on HN something to complain about
cramjabsyn··on The HTTP status code for a web server's default “hello” front page
A failback placeholder is a 404…

5xx is a failure to serve the page, which is not the case if a placeholder is served

cramjabsyn··on LXD Moves into Canonical
Why is it awkward? I manage 5ish lines in a docker compose file describing each service and thats about it
cramjabsyn··on Rocky Linux shares how they may continue to obtain the RHEL source code
Yes 2 years is the realistic lifespan in service. 3 is pushing it as part of the last year is spent on planning/upgrading. LTS is sub optimal.
