cooljacob204··on That Time I Recreated Photoshop in C++
I use this which seems to work well for my projects. Particularly their docker image.

cooljacob204··on French nuclear plant consumes more power than it generates in first two months
Is this expected or an issue?
cooljacob204··on Broken legs and ankles heal better if you walk on them within weeks
Damn I hit 30 this year and planned to buy one.
cooljacob204··on Broken legs and ankles heal better if you walk on them within weeks
I plan to purchase one in the spring. This thread is giving me second thoughts lmao.
cooljacob204··on The Vikings also used crampons to avoid slipping on ice
Can you share an example of what you're referring to?
cooljacob204··on How far can you get in 40 minutes from each subway station in NYC?
Yeah, I wish I could get from Astoria to Forest Hills in only 40 minutes.
cooljacob204··on An artist who trained rats to trade in foreign-exchange markets (2014)
We can choose what jobs we work and find new ones unlike these pigeons.
cooljacob204··on Ask HN: SWEs how do you future-proof your career in light of LLMs?
Imo LLMs are dumb and our field is far from away from having LLMs smart enough to automate it. Even at a junior level. I feel like the gap is so big personally that I'm not worried at all for the next 10 years.
cooljacob204··on Half of Russia's A320/A321neo Fleet Grounded Amid Engine Issues and Sanctions
Compared to other airliners those production number are small.
cooljacob204··on A mistake that killed Japan's software industry? (2023)
I just booked a trip to Japan. Every single website was pretty bad, from airliners to bullet trains and hotels. They all look like something out of 2005 and have confusing flows.
cooljacob204··on New York Times Tech Guild goes on strike
It's a very young union, started in 2021.
cooljacob204··on Zigler: Zig NIFs in Elixir
Do nifs have the equal process time stuff that regular elixir processes have? Where the BEAM will move the scheduler into another process if it's taking too long?

Forgive me if I'm mixing up my terminology it's been a bit since I have poked at Elixir.

cooljacob204··on Upgrading Uber's MySQL Fleet
This is sorta mitigated by partitioning or sharding though right?

Too bad it's sorta annoying to do on plain old pg.

cooljacob204··on How long til we're all on Ozempic?
I don't think anything that can influence our choices would ever get enough public approval for that.
cooljacob204··on DOJ proposes breakup and other big changes to end Google search monopoly
I have been using Firefox for a year. And tbh it's just not as good. Lots of websites only target Chrome.

Ex: most video streaming websites will not render more then 720p outside of Chrome or Edge (both chromium).

It's just not a great experience due to chrome / chromiums stranglehold on web browsing.

cooljacob204··on DOJ proposes breakup and other big changes to end Google search monopoly
After Google shoving manifest v3 down our throats I think it's time for some regulator pressure on them.

An advertisement company should really not have such a stranglehold on web browsing.

cooljacob204··on New Laser Could Cram GPS Alternative into a Shoebox
For the first two questions I wouldn't think so because it detects acceleration. But I also only have a high school level of physics knowledge so maybe I'm wrong.
cooljacob204··on If AI is helping people code better, why aren't products getting better?
I would argue good code helps a product through allowing faster iteration.
cooljacob204··on Sequel: The Database Toolkit for Ruby
This is probably my favorite gem of all time. I strongly prefer it to active record. Especially when I have to do any sort of complex query.
cooljacob204··on Threads Enables Fediverse Replies
They have been doing a lot of open source work in the frontend world for a while. Biggest example is React.
cooljacob204··on What is an SBAT and why does everyone suddenly care
Last time I saw a computer do that it was due to bad memory sticks.
cooljacob204··on Airlines are running out of 4-digit flight numbers
You're right but for the wrong reason. You are referencing the private blocks that are designed for private use. The vast majority are not designed for private use.

The reason it's not unique (using my rudamentry understanding of networking) is because multiple routers can broadcast the same IP so devices can use the closest router.

However I think it's fair to say IP address are intended to be unique to an org while private ips are not.

cooljacob204··on Intel says 13th and 14th Gen mobile CPUs are crashing
Being in any camp is just a bad way to approach things.

I go with AMD because they make the best desktop CPUs right now. When Intel gets their shit together (hopefully) and the pendulum swings back I'll go with them.

These are all corporations at the end of the day. They get better and worse overtime. They certainly never stay the same forever and deserve any kind of loyalty to their brand.

cooljacob204··on Canada 'sleepwalking' into cashless society, consumer advocates warn
The wiki article you linked specifically says it's for more then war like conditions.

"take extraordinary temporary measures to respond to public welfare emergencies, public order emergencies..."

cooljacob204··on Uber Is Locking Out NYC Drivers Mid-Shift to Lower Minimum Pay
Lol having also lived in NYC my entire life yellow cabs were not and are not great. And I don't know a single person who would say it is.

Delivery drivers never got paid fairly either.

Idk what imaginary version of NYC you live in.

cooljacob204··on SQLite vs. ObjectBox vs. Isar
Just because you could increase the performance by putting everything into a transaction doesn't make it right to benchmark with.

Most people won't be inserting large amounts in a single transaction. Ex webserver with many concurrent clients inserting.

cooljacob204··on Security Issue: Cloud Site Manager presented me your consoles, not mine
I really wish they weren't forcing everything to their cloud services for exactly things like this.
cooljacob204··on It's true. Your devices are listening to you
The other team would be the one the OP is questioning.
cooljacob204··on Ruby on Rails: The Documentary [video]
Sure but I think the point is Rails popularized it.
cooljacob204··on Ruby on Rails: The Documentary [video]
> I can go an make it using Ruby on Rails all on my lonesome

Sure can. However I won't pretend it's the only framework you can do this with and be productive. I love Rails and Ruby but it has great competitors these days.

> Do I have to deal with JavaScript in any way?

Really depends on what you're doing but probably.
