conqrr··on Lawsuits Block Thousands of Seattle Homes, $39M for Affordable Housing
This rings so true. Simplistic but can explain most things that are wrong in the US. For an immigrant I see this pattern everywhere from Corporates, Housing, Immigration, Homelessness making friends. Selfishness is in the fabric of society here.
conqrr··on Show HN: IaSQL beta – cloud infra as data in PostgreSQL
Among all the ways to represent infrastructure, code, config, SQL etc I always wonder why visualization or no-code isnt preferred. To me infra is complex enough yet has lots of interdepencies that are very well represented visually like a system design diagram. Unlike code, there isn't much conditional logic. There's a lot of edges cases and state manipulation which can also be represented visually. I'm hoping your SQL approach also paves some way as SQL is nothing but tabular visualization in that sense.
conqrr··on Ask HN: How to Exit FAANG?
I moved from one of these FAANG companies to another company known for its Culture and work life balance. Since 2023, things have turned very sour and the culture nor Wlb both don't exist anymore and the paycut isn't worth it without those. I'd rather chose the devil I know then the one I don't in your case. My advice to you is to keep searching for your paradise (Large company but slow growth with research division / small company but heavily technical), but be aware that you may never do (without a paycut) and if you do things can change quickly and you'll have to adapt.
conqrr··on Ask HN: How to Exit FAANG?
Weather and Crime are the biggest cons. That being said the city and transportation is really well planned compared to other major US cities. I don't think this solves OPs issues. OP wants to remain at an L4/L5 position and not do the TeamLead responsibilities but make similar pay. I think this is still possible in few niches of companies which grow slowly or research divisions. Bloomberg, Salesforce (pre 2023, its completely Uturned now) come to mind.
conqrr··on Google employees criticize CEO for “dumpster fire” response to ChatGPT
That's really nice, but how will you monetize it? In its chat form, that's going to be very difficult. Anyone can train it and launch their own LLM, there's know monopoly or differentiator. Sure, its possible overtime it will uplift search engines, but create a new Industry vertical like Search, Mobile, Social Media, Cloud. I think of it more as a feature /augmentation than its own thing.
conqrr··on How to Beat Stress and Anxiety
Breathing is key. It's one of the easiest ways to facing your current situation and also distracting yourself every moment or so while you breathe. Exhaling along with mental visualization of purging the mind has the effect of releasing stress. Ofcourse, this needs practice, but that's not too hard with the amount of stressful situations we face everyday.

conqrr··on Over 450 thousand surgeries are performed anually at Aravind Eye Care
Dr. Venkataswamy wanted to emulate the service efficiency of McDonald's fast food and sought to adapt it to the eye care system to cope with increasing the numbers of patients treated. From: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aravind_Eye_Hospitals
conqrr··on Mark Zuckerberg doesn't like seeing 'managers managing managers'
You mean the meta point? :) The same applies to a lot of companies like Amazon, Microsoft and Salesforce etc I'd think it would be more optimal to prune at these middle layers and reassign the leaf nodes, instead of pruning at the nodes if a company wants to has overhired.
conqrr··on Mark Zuckerberg doesn't like seeing 'managers managing managers'
Managers managing managers managing managers managing managers… If you are trying to find bloat in your organization, this should be where you start.
conqrr··on Ask HN: Those making $0/month or less on side projects – Show and tell
Selaro https://getselaro.com

Personal/Workplace links and url Organizer and Search. Its a chrome extension. I haven't actively marketed this, but happy with how I can use this everyday personally and have got decent feedback from few friends and family

Price: $0

conqrr··on For your next side project, make a browser extension
Chrome Extension Developer experience was the worst. A week of wait of approvals, Management of extension packages isn't great. Rejects on image formats etc. Firefox hasn't yet adopted Manifest V3 which is also a bummer.

After all this, I still managed to put up Selaro which is a workplace links organizer: https://getselaro.com

conqrr··on ChatGPT won’t replace search engines any time soon
One thing the article misses is that users don't just use Search engines/Google/etc to just search. We use it to solve a problem we have. Find the nearest X, Cheapest Y, Answer to Z. A few of these can be done with the localized data that ChatGPT has. Ofcourse, scaling it to search engine levels is an insanely hard challenge. But it doesn't need to go all the way in to do that. Selectively targeting certain portions of what we use Search for can easily get you to a lot of daily queries that you google. Imagine if ChatGPT didn't need to crawl but you as a Service/Business had to integrate with it, that would could evolve into something different from Search engines and yet eat Search engines.
conqrr··on Poll: What's the best laptop for Linux these days?
I've been using the Beelink SER5 with Manjaro Linux since a month. It also comes preinstalled with Linux, but I got the Windows version. Runs smooth and perfect, no issues at all except for WIFI after suspend that had a small patch. Definitely recommend it. Much better than a laptop since portability isn't the main goal as I prefer a big monitor and use it as a daily use PC. For around $400, glad to have this little beast with 32GB RAM and Ryzen 5600H.

Beats buying a laptop for double the price and likely worse linux compatibility.

conqrr··on Incident affecting Google Ad Manager
World becoming a better place momentarily
conqrr··on What comes up when you flush
For public toilets, will mask help in avoiding this hazard?
conqrr··on Laying myself off from Amazon
Been there done that too.The thing that hit me really hard was Software Engineering vs Writing code/Computer Science are two very different things. Yes they overlap in theory and behavior of systems. There's no deny Amazon chooses to amplify the worst parts of Software Engineering today (poor tooling etc), but most places aren't much better and even if it is, its not forever.
conqrr··on How much have tech layoffs affected engineers vs. other departments?
The bar here is interview performance bar. There is no way to judge a person's performance in 4 hours. Anything you come up with can be hacked or imperfect. Therefore there is no way to set a bar.
conqrr··on How much have tech layoffs affected engineers vs. other departments?
The so called 'bar' references doesn't make much sense. There is no way to measure the performance of an individual. Leetcode style questions don't indicate performance. And what cannot be measured in the first place in a 4 hour interview, cannot have a 'bar'.
conqrr··on I'm Peter Roberts, immigration attorney who does work for YC and startups. AMA
Sorry I meant working inside the US for company registered outside the US
conqrr··on I'm Peter Roberts, immigration attorney who does work for YC and startups. AMA
Thanks for doing this! Can a person on H1b work remotely in the US for their own company outside the US? They'd pay taxes on any international income. Also what if they didn't work but own the company and receive income?
conqrr··on Amazon to Close 4 of Its 5 US Call Centers, Shifts to Work-from-Home
If Amazon is doing it, its the data that's telling that its more efficient cost-wise. They are still one of the most ruthlessly efficient tech companies out there. They are definitely NOT doing it to make it better for employees, but it happens to be a pro for employees too in this scenario.
conqrr··on HashiCorp’s multi-product strategy
Anything to show growth. While I appreciate and understand having a vision, I'd have loved some of these products to just be as it is. With solid feature and we'll maintained. Alas that probably motivates no one and definitely not wall street
conqrr··on Stringbike: Benefits (2020)
Agree! and nothing like a well designed city. For me that comprises of meeting all my needs at biking distance to everything.
conqrr··on Micro-SaaS Alternatives to BigTech/VC
Are two devs the most popular? I wonder how many Dev/PM Dev/Sales combo exist given that non overlapping skill sets can leverage each other.
conqrr··on Ask HN: What HN post made you money?
Amazing, how much does it net you?
conqrr··on Firefox is losing users fast
Is there a general trend of losing web users to mobile? That might explain the slow decline.
conqrr··on Show HN: I built an email marketing tool made for indie hackers and solopreneurs
Awesome stuff. How did you validate your tool? Also did you validate before or after MVP?
conqrr··on Ask HN: Does this idea make any sense?
I'm looking for something similar for a sales cofounder. Someone who could help validate and pitch Saas Ideas and get a commitment on subscription, before I develop the product.
conqrr··on From idea to paying customer
Would this still work for some lo side projects? With only a few hours a day, the research is possible, but shipping fast is definitely not.
