Did the exact same thing, sublime shortcut to add a datetime stamp (Python command) whenever I needed it. Moved to Obsidian recently and the daily note takes care of that. The folder system helps a bit with organizing recurring themes that the daily log journal didn't.
Edit: Reading the comments. Wow Uncanny so many people doing something similar
There's definitely an audience for Framework. But for a laptop/mini-pc user who likes to keep their tech for 7+ years and usually opt for no special graphics. A mini-pc works great for me. Lot of them have good Linux compatibility too. ~70% of the cost is the CPU/motherboard which cannot be swapped. I don't care much about specific ports etc. As long as I can extend RAM and SSD, that's enough customization. So a framework feels overkill.
Damn, I didn't know usb on monitor was a thing. This could work for me if I get a new monitor since I use a single display for multiple boxes. Maybe I could try Synergy too with the ddccontrol command
I use a single monitor, keyboard, mouse for both work and personal and need to switch between these pain free. I haven't come across a seamless solution as most of the software ones rely on mulitiple displays. My current solution is 3 button press on each device (monitor, keyboard, mouse) to switch.
Very nice article and looks like a great way to get hands dirty for anyone wanting to think like a DB engineer. Related question, for all the Database engineers out there. I have always had a keen interest to work on Databases. Having worked at one of the cloud providers and burn my high amount of ops and oncall, I am of the opinion most of the Database engineers usually have a bad wlb. Given the depth and complexity of all Database internals, Any major impact would take a few quarters to roll out, and its not a job for everyone. Is this mostly true?
Wholly agree. Basic necessities Food, Water, Shelter, HealthCare etc should not be left to the whims of the free market. It isn't even hard to fix in the US where land is still plenty but artificially controlled by regulations as opposed to heavily population density places like Japan.
I don't think supply and demand would autofix the issue. When a baseline is set, everyone believes it to be the new price. Same as how when a lie is repeated multiple times, it can dangerously become the false truth.
Simplest reason: The Incentives, pressure, ownership and motivation for work at most places do not justify the outcome, rewards and appreciation.
Analogy: Making a burger end-to-end and handing to customer feels good. Assembly line where your part is just flipping buns all day is pretty meaningless.
At some point, companies become big enough that innovation is a risk (Innovater's dilemma). Atlassian is likely at this stage. Ofcourse, loom's tech is nothing impressive, one could argue that only a small segment of enterprise Loom customers would be willing to convert to Atlassian ecosystem. Nonetheless, the show must go on and Atlassian has to choose action instead of inaction to please the stock market. Good exit for loom though!
If any billionaire wants to start real philanthropy, this would be a good start. Spend $100M or whatever to kill these companies and let free-filing happen.
Any ebike company that's using parts that my local bike shop can't work on is not getting my money. Also any local bike shop that insists they need to charge more for an ebike is not getting my business either. Ebikes are bikes with battery + motor mostly and not a new invention.
This rings true for Mazda as well, which has eventual plans but nothing immediate. I'm sure once they have their EVs, they will uphold to the same reliability as their ICs.
Very Interesting. Glossing over the article, it states HA within a Region. Curious if anyone is successful in running any Database with multi-region HA? How are you doing it?
Congrats on the launch! Will be great if you can shed some light on your initial customer acquisition journey. How did you go about marketing and finding the first few customers?
The relationship isn't complicated at all. It's one based on keeping things as uncertain as possible and giving corporates all the advantages of the talent and driving down wages. The 90% statistic if true only shows how less of a choice Immigrants have when everyone blames immigrants you chose this policy unfair or not and you can choose to leave.
I'd stick to Caddy. I deprecated my old traefik reverse proxy and tls config which took me days to get right earlier mostly due to my lack of understanding, but the config and DSL is a little tricky too. With Caddy its literally 4 lines of code. Sane defaults are really powerful. I don't have any comments on performance etc as these are hobby projects, I did like traefik's dashboard though.
Microsoft teaches a powerful lesson. Being no 2 and diversified can be much better than being no 1 and no diversification for large tech businesses. Its perhaps the most diversified tech business and isn't the best in a single product but has an offering for every product you can imagine for enterprises - Cloud offering, Office suite, CRM, Productivity suite etc.
The most interesting thing for me in this is the article implies that they offer globally distributed consensus. Not sure if this is their actual offering too, but the example of NYC and Signapore implies this. While reads would be fine, the latency for writes could be atleast 2*250ms (roughly the speed between furthest AWS regions). I can still see this useful for applications that require strong consistency and global distribution, but likely a niche. Would be real interesting to see some actual numbers!
One of the fundamental problems that has never been solved is how to verify, record and search facts. As long as we are don't have an official source of Truth for these things, we will rely on low signals like page views, likes etc and these will always be manipulated. Having an AI do this work is still flawed since the signal is low and you are trying to generate high quality data and others know of your process and will beat you soon.
Social media is getting closer to fast fashion. Every app is doomed on creation to live a short life. I'm happy with this, since in reality, its ultimately a tool for marketing and social media is just the side effect. Superficial way of connecting to the masses? use the latest Social media. The real way of staying in touch with people? giving them a call or an email if not meet in person. Nothing beats the personal touch. Super
Anecdotal, also I admit I don't know what the exact range of adversity here is. But from all the immigrant friends I have living in the US and the ones who aren't here, a lot of them come from 'living on the street' environments from South Asia. Their attitude to life is to make it work no matter what and they are stoic. Their drive is something one would aspire to. Inability to take an action isn't an option or a natural state they can be at. I cannot help but compare them to Western born folks and see the stark difference in approaching everything to life.
Depends on what particular "stress and adversity" from early life/ ELA from article. From what we have learnt from Spirituality and all of the wise philosophers, that sounds contradictory. Most of the teachings of philosophy point to adversity and stress as events from which we can learn from and become more stronger mentally. It's possible that always being in this state of stress can morph your worldview to always be broken, and perhaps that is what's being referenced and reflected here.
