colept··on Update on Bitcoin Cash
Do a search for "Coinbase transaction fees."

You'll see theres no major announcement that in April 2017 Coinbase changed it's policy and stopped paying for up to 25 transaction fees on the blockchain. Now I have no problem with this practice in itself - it was a great feature - but my problem lies in that I didn't find out until my API payments started failing.

Here's where they actually announced it: https://blog.coinbase.com/coinbase-spring-cleaning-4f27710ff...

In the middle of a blog post that's far out of sight. For a policy change of that effect I cannot believe how they conducted it.

Then there's the multitude of API problems over the years. I would send payments and the response indicated success, but I would login and see the payments were never sent from my account.

The volume of payments I send through Coinbase is far too high for two months to go by and still not know why their API just fails from time to time. They collect enough fees from instant buys and transactions that I would expect reliability and due diligence. Especially when the security of my business depends on it.

colept··on Update on Bitcoin Cash
Is there a viable alternative to Coinbase? Their support is absurdly awful. Two months and they sent two auto-replies to a simple ticket that couldn't be answered by the knowledge base. They don't care about your money - so long as it's already in their vault.
colept··on CircleCI now supports Git Tags
Wow great timing. I just picked up v2 this last weekend and waited until this feature to push forward.
colept··on Reddit raises $200M at a $1.8B valuation
I would be ok if Reddit stopped doing silly things like Secret Santa, Arbitrary Day, and [other random gift day].

Reddit used to be a place I could go to see topics re: Science, Tech, the Internet, and gadgets. It was the network where my friends weren't - and that felt cool like I was a part of an exclusive club. Things like the April fools pranks: Place/Chat/Button - those are what make Reddit special.

Now all my friends are on Reddit and we send each other links - which is also nice. But I miss the exclusivity and with the loss of it comes a dilution of content to meet the lowest common denominator of entertainment transmissions.

Reddit was a lot more authentic before it started functioning as a community group (ie: "redditors").

colept··on Why I left Medium and moved back to my own domain
No I opted for no-domain because my articles can be sequestered to any publication where they will receive better exposure than if I had reserved it for my own.
colept··on Why I left Medium and moved back to my own domain
Because when I switched to Medium my blog posts went from ~50 impressions to 1000+ impressions

Exposure.

colept··on Social Media Is the New Smoking
In college social media consumed me. Instead of going out and having fun I was watching my friends go out and have fun. It got to such a bad point that I was lurking enviously across random profiles.

In 2013 I gave up Facebook and it felt like a deadweight lifted. I stopped worrying about what acquaintances were up to. Friends and I kept in touch through conventional conversation. I endured the same awful feeling with Instagram when I moved 3000 miles away from my friends and family.

Everyone is crafting an online identity of how they want to appear and we all know we're doing it. There's little room for raw, unedited perception. Every moment has to be post card or else you don't measure up. Networks like Facebook and Instagram are a self-fulfilling prophecies of low self esteem.

colept··on Ask HN: What problems does blockchain solve?
The blockchain really only solves one problem:

How to trust a single entity by using a magnitude of peers to establish an agreement. In the case of Bitcoin it's a monetary transaction.

One example would be file digesting. When you consider malware: if files were signed and digested on ablockchain we would have better oversight of the authenticity of a download. A file could be confirmed against the blockchain to detect if it matches the certification. Since the source alone cannot be trusted, the confirmation of many adds that layer of trust.

Anything beyond the issue of trust is not suitable for a blockchain as there are more efficient technologies.

colept··on Content isn't king
I highly recommend a quick read of Marshall McLuhan's "The medium is the message": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_medium_is_the_message

Netflix, Amazon, et all - are not redefining content. They're redefining the medium.

colept··on Animating svg with flubber in react
Very neat. Loved the state tweeting example.
colept··on Ask HN: Which wireless router do you use at home?
There was a black friday deal for the following router:

https://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-10864

Which was easy to upgrade the firmware and then override so I could install Tomato.

colept··on Why I will continue to use Linode
Have used Linode for ~7 years and I cannot imagine another provider.

Their range of offerings is unparalleled and their support is phenomenal. Yes there have been a few glitches in the road but I've never seen the same experience elsewhere.

colept··on Introducing sphinx-js, a better way to document large JavaScript projects
More documentation libraries the better.

I myself have used https://esdoc.org/ and it was wonderful.

colept··on Net Neutrality Day of Action: Help Preserve the Open Internet
I was hoping Amazon would do something creative like offering Prime Six-Day Shipping but nope - just some graphic tossed aside so they can keep selling Fire devices.
colept··on I'm not a Woman in Tech
I'm glad this was said because I think there's a spotlight on "women in tech" right now and all that's being said is how hard it is to be a woman. Yes there is a glass ceiling in tech for women but consider how easy it is for women to get to that ceiling versus being a man.

Given the previous study that said companies more likely hire men when names are removed from an application - it makes me curious about what it would be like to be a woman in tech. Would I get more interviews? Would my blog posts and tweets get shared more because women get better exposition in the developer communities?

Women have to try hard to break that ceiling, but men have to try harder to get there. Being in a minority puts you in a spotlight - people pay attention to you.

That doesn't make discrimination or sexual harassment okay and I'm not saying women should count their chickens but I can't help but feel numb to some of the noise that surrounds this issue.

colept··on Let's End the GIF/JIF Pronunciation Debate Right Now
That would be the nail in the coffin for language change.

If creators dictate the terms of use for language we wouldn't have dialects or pidgin languages. The English language would not exist in itself given it's a melting pot of Anglo-Saxon, French, German, Greek, and a few other sources. We would still be speaking Old or Middle English.

colept··on iOS 11 turns the iPad into a different machine
I disagree.

The new lock screen/notification center combo is an abomination. I have an iPhone 6S Plus and am considering downgrading to iOS10 or jailbreaking solely because of the notification center fubar.

For the longest time, and made better in iOS10 - our primary mode of unfolding UI was directional. You swipe up and you get the control center. Swipe down to see your notifications.

Now we have this half brained implementation where direction is now secondary to virtual anchors. Swipe up to see your lock screen and last few notifications. Then swipe up to see older notifications. But don't swipe up from too far down or else you get your control center.

This is ironic given how terrible the iOS10 control center was with it's multi-direction paginating views. They appeared to learn their lesson and fixed the usability issue in their latest major revision. But here we are again, and it's terrible.

colept··on Uber rolls out in-app tipping
I'm happy for drivers but not a fan of this change.

In Los Angeles I booked a ride and the driver never showed up. After cancelling the ride I got the $5 charge and luckily their support took care of it.

But tipping is something that needs to go away. I liked Uber despite their troubles because I was paying for a service and the minimum viable product is that the driver gets me from point A to point B safely.

Now what's in a fare? An opportunity to get in a car to pay more money for them to do their job.

colept··on Ask HN: How do you authenticate your React front-end with your Rails API?
I have only great things to say about:

colept··on Celebrate the web by using another browser than Google’s Chrome
It works now I guess, but Safari has quirks I've seen time and time again where things don't work as they should.

I'm also hesitant to call it "fixed" considering it happened just last month and YMMV with a one-element pen.

colept··on Celebrate the web by using another browser than Google’s Chrome
I don't think that's the monoculture of developers.

Chrome was based in Webkit in it's rising years - which put it on par with Safari and Android. This meant that you could develop comfortably and do less cross-browser work up front.

Developers got comfortable. Chrome is open source, extendable, and keeps up with web standards.

colept··on Celebrate the web by using another browser than Google’s Chrome
Safari "filter:blur()" is not compatible with background images. Background images on a filtered element will disappear. While "backdrop-filter" is not compatible with any other browser.

You either have to choose Safari (which only has a leading-yet-declining share on Macs) or every other browser to support.

colept··on Celebrate the web by using another browser than Google’s Chrome
You are spreading misinformation.

http://zdnet3.cbsistatic.com/hub/i/r/2016/06/18/77931904-cbe...

While of June 2016 - Safari is still among the top browsers I see for my website visitors.

Yes Chrome uses more battery - but Safari also has use of native API's that integrate tightly with the Apple Ecosystem. Chrome has its own sync, bookmarks, password manager, etc. Safari is great if you don't need Gmail or Google Calendar - but Chrome integrates better with it's other product offerings.

> ignoring standards like "filter: blur()" > This is false.

Wrong again. Using "filter: blur()" with a background image will make that image disappear in certain circumstances. Instead Apple implemented its own "backdrop-filter" which is not cross-compatible between features.

Planned or not, backdrop-filter is currently not supported in Chrome by default. Or any other browser. http://caniuse.com/css-backdrop-filter/embed

>I don't see how you can consider Firefox a leader anymore. That browser is a mess, hopefully they make a comeback.

Again misinformation. Chrome and Firefox have the leading browser scores for features supported:

colept··on Celebrate the web by using another browser than Google’s Chrome
> But you can stop it. By balancing the browsers, choosing to use not just what’s convenient, but what’s lesser used, you can make the business case for monopoly plays a bad deal. Consider it your civic duty as a fan of the open web.

Internet Explorer was a monopoly because it was the default web browser installed on the most prevalent operating system. It's the same reason Safari has a majority on Macs even while it lagged behind a couple years.

Chrome is convenient, but I'm not about to start using Opera or Safari because Google is making a better browser. I tried using Safari on my phone and navigating was just so rigid compared to the gestures in Chrome. Safari is behind the times and slowly catching up on web technologies, but also has taken some weird side-steps by ignoring standards like "filter: blur()" and implementing their own "backdrop-filter" that no other browser uses. Chrome and Firefox are the leaders in feature advancement and cross-browser standards.

edit: Would like to clarify that when I mean ignoring the "filter: blur()" standard - Safari will remove a background image instead of blurring it.

Use what's convenient so other browsers step it up.

colept··on Powering Twitch and Medium, Algolia (YC W14) raises $53M
It works well and works fast.

Indexes are easy to setup, maintain, and SDK's support a variety of languages. Querying is fast enough to feel seamless.

colept··on Apple HomePod
Another music playback device and still no Continuity support for Apple Music.
colept··on Apple Teases Upcoming Space Gray iMac Pro, "the most powerful Mac ever"
I have used both a thick iMac and a thin one. I had to run the thick iMac's fans at full speed all the time or else my CPU would bottleneck.

The thin iMac had underpowered fans and constantly throttled.

colept··on Apple Teases Upcoming Space Gray iMac Pro, "the most powerful Mac ever"
This is Apple's answer to their negligence to the Pro market, and it's hugely disappointing.

The iMac was already supposed to be a Pro machine. And then they "New Coke"'d it by making it too thin and susceptible to overheating. Performance suffered and now they're compensating with this machine.

At $5000 the iMac Pro falls just short of a ~$2000 Hackintosh. It's still locked into the thin form factor that can't be upgraded and does not vent heat well enough. I'm sure this works for big companies like Disney where machines are replaced every few years. However as a developer, a Pro user, I've never felt more validated in my choice to switch away from Apple's hardware.

colept··on Coinbase suffers outages amid Bitcoin surge
Perfect opportunity to ask:

Does anyone know of an alternative to Coinbase with an API for sending payouts to Bitcoin addresses?

I am disappointed with their standard of transparency and support. A couple months ago they decided to stop paying on-chain transaction fees. While I understand this move - the manner in which they conducted this change was abysmal: no notice and a brief mention in an obscure blog post. When I reached out to them, I received no response on the matter and I spend several hundred a week through their API.
