code_chimp··on Kenny Baker, actor behind R2-D2, dies
Another Time Bandit gone, RIP.
code_chimp··on Unilever Buys Dollar Shave Club for $1B
I've shaved with those sub-$10 razors and a $30 Merkur razor - the difference is not negligible. The Merkur's body is more solid, heavier, and generally feels better in my hand. I can get a decent shave with either, but I stick the the more expensive one at home and take the other when I travel.
code_chimp··on Visual Studio Code 1.2 released
On my Windows 7 work laptop I just added the following to my settings.json:

    "terminal.external.windowsExec": "Powershell.exe",
    "terminal.integrated.shell.windows": "C:\\windows\\system32\\WindowsPowerShell\\v1.0\\powershell.exe"

code_chimp··on Ask HN: What are the best books on creating a programming language?
You can usually find an International Edition of the dragon book on eBay for around 25 USD. The cover may be different, but the content is the same.
code_chimp··on Graphs That Showed Landmark Discoveries but Were Later Debunked
Once you closed all of the X-10 pop-ups.
code_chimp··on Matchstick to refund everyone's money
Maybe it's more PR on their side? If they ever want to run another KS campaign it helps to not have already created a lot of bad will with the target audience.
code_chimp··on Hello Ruby – Almost there
I'm not sure what the deleted post was about, but as a backer of both yours and Linda's projects there is quite a bit of difference. You did an excellent job communicating with us exactly what was going on, and why delays were happening. At the end of the campaign I received exactly what I paid for - not some excuse why I was paying an extra $20 to receive it only a month before everyone else can get it on Amazon much cheaper.

I never questioned for a second my purchase of "Hello Web App", but the little girl that I bought "Hello Ruby" for is going to be almost too old for the book finally being delivered.

"Growth for the sake of growth is the ideology of the cancer cell." - Edward Abbey
code_chimp··on The Inevitable return of Cobol
The COBOL version of K&R was Stern & Stern: http://www.amazon.com/Structured-COBOL-Programming-Nancy-Ste... - I'm guessing it's probably still pretty relevant as I was playing a little with OpenCobol last year and managed to look up what I had forgotten in my old dog-eared copy of that book.
code_chimp··on The Inevitable return of Cobol
I had no problem with Cobol back in the day, it was a fairly easy language to use once you got used to it. The main problem I have seen is the utter crap way its programmers were treated after the whole Y2K thing was over with. Why would anyone want to walk into a job like that when they can learn Rails and be a 'Rockstar' or any other web-based offering and at least be treated like a valuable commodity?
code_chimp··on Ask HN: What tech blogs, podcasts do you follow outside of HN?
http://entreprogrammers.com/ - Josh Earl, John Sonmez, Derick Bailey, and Charles Max Wood discussing the life of an entrepreneur programmer.

code_chimp··on Show HN: Sublime Text Book
Just skimming and the content seems really good so far, just a couple of nits to pick. The PDF appears to be missing a table of contents and the chapter links starting on page 2 are not working in Okular running on Ubuntu 14.04 - they appear as links to files on the author's local DropBox.

The epub looks pretty good on the iPad.

code_chimp··on Show HN: Sublime Text Book
I have a debit card with plenty of cash in the account backing it, but Stripe keeps rejecting it. This is probably the first time I've tried to use Stripe - not impressed. I will contact Wes for the PayPal information.

code_chimp··on How a German Soda Became Hackers' Fuel of Choice

code_chimp··on No-bullshit guide to linear algebra
Seconded
code_chimp··on Announcing Two Scoops of Django 1.6
Sorry, without an ebook I'm going to pass - I read/utilize most of my tech books on my iPad.

I purchased the original as an ebook, and even went back and bought a physical copy to because I thought what Dan and Audrey were doing was pretty cool. I really don't need a second physical book, but could use an updated epub. Too bad.

code_chimp··on 'Learn Ruby on Rails' is free today
I backed the KickStarter near the beginning of this campaign to get access to alpha version of the book so I could review it for a few "new to web programming" friends of mine. I thought it was a really good resource for my friends that already program in something (say Windows Forms) and wanted to make the leap to doing web applications. Thanks Daniel!
code_chimp··on Motherfucking Website
I read it in Zed Shaw's voice, doing a Samuel L. Jackson impression.
code_chimp··on Get your books more cheaply – possibly
I just buy direct from O'Reilly or Pragmatic Programmers' websites. The books are DRM-free and they come with free updates.
