code_chimp··on Indian government empowers itself to “fact check,” delete social media posts
The government will just infiltrate and control that third party by funding it. "You want us to raise your rates the next round of appropriations, here is what we expect to get 'fact checked'".
code_chimp··on Twitter to employees: all office buildings closed, badge access suspended
Imagine the relief of not filling out dozens of useless forms for five layers of management that do not really understand what you do anyway. One could really GSD at that point.

If they could get Jason Momoa to play Raven I would definitely give it a shot.

I am over 50 and asthmatic - if I feel that I am in danger I am free to self-quarantine. There is no need to impinge on everyone else's freedoms to ensure my safety - I am a big boy and able to take care of my own health decisions.
code_chimp··on How a Cruise Ship Makes 30k Meals Every Day [video]
For me it's the Guy's Burgers - but it is soft serve ice cream 24/7 for my daughter.

It may be "The Walmart of Cruising" but we always have fun and meet new people on Carnival for a very reasonable cost.

Pragmatic Programmers beta and published books are available as all three - PDF, epub, and mobi (which reads fine on my Kindle).

code_chimp··on Darpa wants help cracking the election security problem
Source? In the US I need a valid ID to cash a check, pick up a benefit check, apply for government benefits, buy cold medication, board an airplane, open a bank account, etc. This is a short list off of the top of my head. Are all of these activities disenfranchising me?
code_chimp··on Ask HN: Why is HN so aggressively anti-Bitcoin?
I personally like Hyperledger Fabric (https://www.hyperledger.org/projects/fabric) for a private blockchain technology.

That being said I still have not found the problem that it is the solution for other than addressing our CTO's case of FOMO.

code_chimp··on Why play a music CD? No ads, no privacy terrors, no algorithms
Nice feature I found on Amazon - when I buy the physical CD they add the albums to my "Amazon Music" so I can stream them as well.
code_chimp··on We Don't Have a Talent Shortage. We Have a Sucker Shortage
I don't do the 4-5 interview thing any more either. If you cannot make a determination in 1 or 2 interviews in person - in combination with my work history and references then you are wasting my time and yours.

After working at a startup for a few years (that failed) I have been trying to find the right fit in this market, but sadly have not been able to find the right team/energy/culture fit. Lacking that I believe that WFH would be the next best thing.

I am comfortable from most OSs - my home office currently sports a Dell running Windows 10, a 2012 MacBook Pro, and a homebrew Linux box running Kubuntu 18.04.

code_chimp··on U.S. workers hate ‘open’ office spaces
I am in the process of leaving a very decently compensated position at one of the better places to work in my market specifically because they have converted us to "open office". Maybe it would have been different if they were this way to start with, but going from a small cubicle to absolutely no separation between myself and all of the devs surrounding me is getting untenable for myself.

Having my headphones on constantly is annoying and I cannot seem to tune out all of the ancillary motion around me. It also doesn't help that the monitors are now so much closer to my face that I now find myself turning my head back and forth more to see my monitors and by the end of the day my eyes are tired.

code_chimp··on Ask HN: Why did you quit your last job?
Internal politics.

I hate them, refuse to play along, and the moment I can no longer keep the drama at least a meter away from me I start talking to recruiters.

code_chimp··on Ask HN: What do you nerds spend your money on?
Floppy disks, tentacle pr0n, and Ramen

But seriously get a spouse and one or more offspring and the extra money ends up getting invested in family events, college savings, kids' activity fees/gear, etc.

code_chimp··on Vue.js vs. React: what happened in 2017
IMHO, keep on the path you are on until you are really comfortable with Angular, then learn React as well.

I went the opposite direction - put up a large React/Redux codebase and now have moved on to a position that requires Angular. There is no harm in knowing more than one framework, I find that both will get the job done.

code_chimp··on Visual Studio Code 1.5
For me, it is. Some of the main points that makes it worth money to me are the plugin ecosystem is huge, the editor is fast, its layout management (panes in columns/rows) is incredible, and it was the first editor I had that gave me multi-cursors. I like where VS Code is going and I try to use it when I can, but most of the keybindings and shortcuts I have memorized are for Sublime and IntelliJ based IDEs.
