cmckn··on How Kubernetes Probes Work
> what's the problem with restarting?

Exponential backoff can delay recovery up to kubelet’s maxContainerRestartPeriod (default 5m).

cmckn··on Linux 7.3 improves performance when running out of vRAM
This type of thrashing was the most common OOM issue I saw on my servers, the system would effectively deadlock until I pulled the plug. In my setup this seemed to be caused by slow-ish disks, and using a small amount of zram made things more CPU-bound / less IO-bound. I haven’t seen the problem since, the OOM killer does what I expect.
cmckn··on Our position on open-weights models
This framing also builds a case for AI being a Second Amendment issue in the US, which seems to work against Anthropic here.
cmckn··on Are AI labs pelicanmaxxing?
I used Claude to plan some landscaping, and it gave me SVG diagrams of flower beds showing where to place plants and their approximate mature size. It was pretty useful.
cmckn··on Dependabot version updates introduce default package cooldown
I agree, it’s just the wrong approach. As a user, there’s no way to know if a package has been audited during the cooldown by some generous cybersecurity firm before you pull it in, it’s just wishful thinking. Minimizing your dependencies is a more effective strategy against supply chain attacks.
cmckn··on Creatine raise brain energy levels and slow Alzheimer's cognitive decline by 30%
I dissolve it in my coffee every morning, it’s flavorless. I believe 5 grams is the standard dose, it’s about a teaspoon.

I wouldn’t bother with the “loading phase” you often see recommended online. Just be consistent.

cmckn··on Today I've made the difficult decision to reduce the size of Coinbase by ~14%
Yeah, look on the bright side.
cmckn··on Apple accidentally left Claude.md files Apple Support app
It’s not a conversation like you’d have with a friend, it’s the type of interaction you’d have with a chatbot, just hands-free.

To give you an example, I was having coffee the other morning while unloading the dishwasher and asked the speaker if today was a good day to apply weed and feed on my lawn. This was not possible with the old assistant and was useful to me.

cmckn··on Apple accidentally left Claude.md files Apple Support app
I like that I can ask more nuanced questions without getting dumped to a web search, and I can have a back-and-forth conversation.

But timers and smart home actions are definitely less reliable and sometimes take absurdly long to respond (like 20-30 seconds p99).

cmckn··on An update on GitHub availability
MAWS is “Move to AWS”, the name of the internal campaign to get legacy services into a somewhat-retrofitted AWS environment. It was a single VPC at one point.
cmckn··on Age verification on Systemd and Flatpak
Why does it exist?
cmckn··on The new Apple begins to emerge
Reminds me of bacteria under a microscope.
cmckn··on Lenovo’s new ThinkPads score 10/10 for repairability
I built a tower several years ago and it had CPU temp issues from the start. I RMA’d the cooler, reapplied the thermal paste a couple times, reassembled the whole build, etc. It wasn’t my main machine, but every time I sat down to use it the CPU would run hot and thermal-throttle. It’s an i9 with P/E cores, so I just chalked it up to Linux power management woes. A couple months ago I was on the brink of selling it for parts, but updated the BIOS as a Hail Mary. Totally fixed it.

I guess I did “ have a specific bug that needs fixed”; I just didn’t know it!

cmckn··on Anthropic Cowork feature creates 10GB VM bundle on macOS without warning
> Xcode…keeps around SDKs for a bunch of different OS's

Not a new problem, unfortunately. DevCleaner is commonly used to keep it under control: https://github.com/vashpan/xcode-dev-cleaner

cmckn··on Everett shuts down Flock camera network after judge rules footage public record
Please contact your representative in Olympia and tell them to kill the bill that would exempt this footage from public record requests. It passed the Senate on Feb. 6.

cmckn··on Setting up phones is a nightmare
To be fair, setting up a new iPhone (without restoring from backup) is a pretty long-winded process these days. You have to make about 50 decisions on various features, tap through numerous info screens, set up Face ID, Apple Pay, voice recognition, etc. etc. It feels like every team at Apple wants something in the onboarding flow.
cmckn··on Fix the iOS keyboard before the timer hits zero or I'm switching back to Android
Autocorrect just cuts out for me pretty often, usually when I’m a couple sentences into a longer text entry. This is particularly annoying when using the Claude app or similar. The suggestion bar above the keyboard goes blank and I just stop getting any corrections.
cmckn··on Jony Ive Designed Ferrari Luce EV Interior
Needing to “dock” the key in the center console to start the car is clunky. We’ve had the proximity key thing figured out for like 15 years. It also seems impossible to have the car key on a ring with anything else?
cmckn··on Apple to soon take up to 30% cut from all Patreon creators in iOS app
TLDR: if you still have any Patreon subscriptions through Apple’s in-app-purchase flow (look in Settings > Apple Account > Subscriptions) cancel them and restart them on patreon.com
cmckn··on A macOS app that blurs your screen when you slouch
I kind of feel the same way, but I want to try it. I’m pretty sure I have a spare webcam lying around, it could be interesting to have a “trusted” sensor for this app so that I can still keep my main webcam locked down.
cmckn··on Show HN: Lume 0.2 – Build and Run macOS VMs with unattended setup
I started on my Linux box and despite many apps claiming to support iPods, none would actually work. I ended up getting an old Mac mini running again and I’m using that for now. I’ve never given Rockbox a good look, I should check it out.
cmckn··on Show HN: Lume 0.2 – Build and Run macOS VMs with unattended setup
Ahh I see. UTM was what I was trying, so I’ll give those a look! Thanks
cmckn··on Show HN: Lume 0.2 – Build and Run macOS VMs with unattended setup
I tried to set up a macOS VM recently so I could run an old version of iTunes to manage my iPods. I found it nearly impossible to even download an installer for older versions of the OS, and could never get it working. Where can one acquire an IPSW for, say, macOS Mojave? My understanding is this is not the same thing as the “Install macOS.app”?
cmckn··on Microsoft May Have Created the Slowest Windows in 25 Years with Windows 11
This really made me laugh, thanks.
cmckn··on Dell admits consumers don't care about AI PCs
Usually that legalese goes away after ~30 seconds or when you put it in drive, you rarely have to actually hit “OK”. But I haven’t been in a recent Subaru!
cmckn··on Hyundai Introduces Its Next-Gen Atlas Robot at CES 2026 [video]
The way it stands up is so cursed but I find its face really charming.
cmckn··on It's hard to justify Tahoe icons
> I have literally no idea how to get to my home directory

Just add it to the sidebar. Finder > Settings > Sidebar > Locations. Or drag it into Favorites.

> doesn't have a button to navigate to the parent folder

View > Show Path Bar. You can also right click on the directory name at the top of the window and it’ll give you the same options.

That would only be like $7 in powerball ;)
cmckn··on Show HN: Website that plays the lottery every second
A few years ago I wrote a script to compare my numbers against all previous drawings. Still didn’t “win”!
cmckn··on Going immutable on macOS, using Nix-Darwin
Are folks not using migration assistant when they get a new Mac? I’ve had the “same” macOS install for almost 20 years, across 6 or 7 machines, and it’s fine. I see the value of nix-darwin if you use multiple Macs and change them frequently, but that’s never been me.
