cmckn··on How we migrated onto K8s in less than 12 months
> Amazon probably uses lambda elsewhere

Yes, you could say that. :)

cmckn··on After Furiosa flops, Hollywood could be facing a biblically disastrous summer
Obviously things differ by location, but I'm in a large, pretty expensive city (Seattle). I usually go to the Cinemark in Bellevue because they have IMAX. This is a nice theater in a nice area. A ticket to see Furiosa tonight, in IMAX, is $19.50. A ticket for a standard screen is $13.50. My recollection is that's pretty much what movie tickets cost 10 years ago.

I think the films just aren't enticing enough to steal eyes from streaming services, TikTok, etc.

cmckn··on Making EC2 boot time faster
You can enable fast restore on the EBS snapshot that backs your AMI: https://docs.aws.amazon.com/ebs/latest/userguide/ebs-fast-sn...

It’s not cheap, but it speeds things up.

cmckn··on Multiple Displays on a Mac Sucks
The external display limitations of Apple silicon Macs are inscrutable and infuriating.

I have an M3 Pro from work. At the office, I plug it into an HP dock with a single USB-C cable (which I believe is TB4). I have 3 displays connected to the dock and they all work.

I purchased the exact same dock for my home, but only 2 of my displays work there.

I think the M3 Pro is documented to support 2 displays; you have to get the Ultra to have 3 (absurd). The dock is able to do some kind of workaround with the displays at the office, but I can’t figure out what the displays at home are lacking for that to work.

It’s 2024! For gods sake I should be able to have a dozen displays if I want.

cmckn··on Fault tolerance and resilience patterns for Go
My impression has always been that they’re a Java house: https://mvnrepository.com/artifact/com.spotify

But of course most large orgs have a little bit of everything.

cmckn··on Infowars and Goop sell the same exact pseudoscientific "wellness" products
The Goop demographic can absolutely afford healthcare. People just prefer to throw money at their problems.
cmckn··on LG washing machine sending 3.7GB of data a day
When I was in college, the machines in my dorm building’s laundry room would send you an SMS when the cycle finished. It was super handy, and would be awesome to have if your home is multi-level (or the machine is tucked away where no one can hear it scream)
cmckn··on Dive: A tool for exploring a Docker image, layer contents and more
It depends on your OCI engine; but this isn’t the case with containers. Each layer is successively “unpacked” upon a “snapshot”, from which containers are created.
cmckn··on Test Smarter, Not Harder: Focus on Outcomes, Not Outputs
Agreed. An e2e test suite can continue passing with significant bug rot throughout the system, as they’re often given generous timeouts, retries for flakes, etc. So once you realize something is really, truly broken; it’s going to be a nightmare to track down and properly fix if the e2e suite is your only data point.
cmckn··on iPods now considered vintage tech– so of course sold out at Urban Outfitters
Aw, I wanted to flip through the product photos but UO and Retrospekt have taken them all down.

I loved my first generation iPod Nano. It was such a beautiful little thing.

Edit: this will have to do! https://web.archive.org/web/20060529192323/http://www.apple....

cmckn··on Why every microwave sucks these days
I think that’s how most “commercial” microwaves work; the food stays put and the element moves. It’s much easier to clean and it (usually) heats the food more evenly.
cmckn··on Human microbiome myths and misconceptions
I think you’d have to eat a colossal amount of garlic for its anti-microbial properties to have any measurable impact on your gut bacteria.
cmckn··on About half of Bandcamp employees have been laid off
I’ve never seen these kind of roles even in huge companies. “Sprint master” as a job description? Can’t be serious.
cmckn··on Insurance companies fill their networks with ‘ghost’ therapists
I think this is the most infuriating thing about US healthcare. Your doctor thinks you need a diagnostic test to make sure you don’t have cancer?

Sorry bud, random bureaucrat at Premera thinks not! But you’re welcome to spend hours of your time filing and following-up on an appeal with absolutely zero chance of a different outcome!

cmckn··on Graph Mining Library
Pregel is a distributed graph processing system, this (AFAICT) is a library for working with graphs in-memory on a single computer.
cmckn··on UK Government Extends Petrol and Diesel Car Sales Until 2035
I think owning a personal vehicle will definitely get more complicated and less convenient with the transition to electric (at least for a period of time); but I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing. Folks will have to lean more on public transit, bike lanes, etc; which will change how public funds are allocated over time. It could be a virtuous cycle.
cmckn··on Global Google Kubernetes Engine Outage
Woah, I completely missed that this has been going on since the 13th?! That’s outrageous, surely something can just be rolled back.
cmckn··on Global Google Kubernetes Engine Outage
I would expect the Venn diagram of:

1) actually using autoscaling in prod

2) using it for a stateful workload (with PV’s)

3) needing to scale that workload during this time window

4) using this specific k8s version

To be razor thin.

I’m honestly surprised they’ve reported the impact on this dashboard; but good to see they did.

cmckn··on Why new furniture doesn’t last long
Bookshelves are pretty low-traffic, so I don’t see why an Ikea one wouldn’t last as long as you needed it to. I think you’ll probably get tired of the look of it before the structure fails in any meaningful way.
cmckn··on Building and operating a pretty big storage system called S3
Eh, UUID’s are usually not truly global anyway; so you’d need a collision in the context of a single region, cell, user, resource, etc. for it to matter.
cmckn··on LinkedIn adopts protocol buffers and reduces latency up to 60%
I think that’s referring to some specific libraries by MS that provided a batteries-included gRPC + bond setup. The standard gRPC libraries still allow you to plug in whatever serialization format you want, including bond.

But based on the complete lack of activity on the issue, gRPC + bond doesn’t seem like a popular choice. :)

cmckn··on LinkedIn adopts protocol buffers and reduces latency up to 60%
I wonder why they didn’t use MS’ protobuf clone, bond: https://github.com/microsoft/bond

When I was at MS, it was definitely preferred over protobuf. IIRC it was also used internally as the wire format for gRPC. I guess LinkedIn is still kind of doing their own thing.

cmckn··on Apple plans a slow, appointment-only rollout of Vision Pro
Even when the product you want is out on a shelf, it’s annoying that there’s no line to get in to pay for it. If you need help, you just have to chase someone down. The whole experience feels chaotic and contrarian.
cmckn··on Bluesky facing degraded performance due to record high traffic
They still show as unused on my end, but maybe that’s impacted by the outage.

Edit: ah, hard refresh of the app fixed that. Sorry!

cmckn··on Bluesky facing degraded performance due to record high traffic
My invite codes are piling up, so here are a few:

  (Removed, all used)
Don’t be weird. The invites link back to me. :)
cmckn··on Twitter now requires an account to view tweets
I would not assume that, no. Following accounts is fundamental to using Twitter; I absolutely think the majority of people using Twitter are logged-in.
cmckn··on The .meta directory: let's tidy things up
I tend to agree. The reason these files land in the root directory of many repos is because the multitude of tools that use them expect their file to be in $PWD, and running make or mvn or docker or npm from the root of the repo is usually convenient. Changing that paradigm needs more of a justification than tidiness, I think.
cmckn··on Tell HN: Interview take home assessments without feedback are frustrating
I mean sure, why not; but unless they want to open source your interview code, that license doesn’t really have teeth. Just another reason to decline take-homes, IMO.
cmckn··on Ask HN: Why does Apple refuse to add window snapping to macOS?
The title bar double-click is configurable. I think minimize is a more useful, but maximize is the default.

You can also double click on any edge of a window to expand that edge to the edge of the display.
