citizenkeen··on Social media can be a ‘profound risk’ to youth, surgeon general warns
The mantra we use with our kids is "We will try and respect your privacy but we aren't bound by it." As I often tell my son, "It's your room but it's my house."

And we make it extra clear that the moment they go online, they have no expectation of privacy. Better they learn that someone's snooping now than be surprised when it's Google/Facebook/NSA.

citizenkeen··on Why do recipe writers lie about how long it takes to caramelize onions? (2012)
There are so many books on the technique of cooking, not the recipes.

Time to watch Cunningham's Law in action.

citizenkeen··on TikTok is now banned in Montana
They already do? Plenty of apps are banned in various countries, if I recall correctly.
citizenkeen··on Students are increasingly refusing to go to school
But the shooter drills are incredibly common. Just because it doesn't happen often doesn't mean children aren't often being forced to think about it happening.
citizenkeen··on JPMorgan Chase and Co tracks employees to dystopian extents
That sounds like a cost for the company, not the employee.
citizenkeen··on Hippo Meat Nearly Became an American Food Staple
This is fascinating, because the current TV show _Mrs. Davis_ has references to hippo meat which I think really cements that it's a parallel universe.
citizenkeen··on Gamedev from Scratch 1: Scaffolding
I'm sad that this is the second part and then the series stopped.
citizenkeen··on Linda Yaccarino is the new CEO of Twitter
> In the seven months since Musk bought the company he singlehandedly fired nearly every employee, accidentally locked the remainder out of the headquarters, turned blue-check validation into a living nightmare for international brands, un-banned some of the most notorious and repugnant users from white nationalists to bigots and racists, mis-branded news outlets as state-sponsored, threatened to open a news agency to impersonation on his platform, cancelled most of the API, and tried to extort the very brands his platform depended on in a cash-for-validation scheme that backfired spectacularly.

Which one of those claims wasn't real?

citizenkeen··on UN Human Rights Chief Urges UK to Reverse ‘Deeply Troubling’ Public Order Bill
This isn't Reddit
citizenkeen··on Canada extends copyright protection another 20 years to meet trade obligation
Who should decide how things are spent?

My wife and I vote on our personal budget all the time.

citizenkeen··on Ocean-surface temperatures are breaking records
What do you think the primary theme of HN is? Because the stated theme is:

> Anything that good hackers would find interesting. That includes more than hacking and startups. If you had to reduce it to a sentence, the answer might be: *anything that gratifies one's intellectual curiosity.*

(Emphasis mine.)

citizenkeen··on America will soon see a wave of bank mergers?
> The only way to prevent this from happening is to threaten violence or threat of violence to either of these people.

That's a weird view.

We could also just, you know, vote away banks. I'm not sure why a centralized bank would result in violence.

citizenkeen··on IBM AS/400: Databases all the way down (2019) [video]
We have 2.5 RPG/AS400 devs in my department keeping our old legacy system alive and trucking. They're great devs and they do good work, but every time I get roped into their side of things I feel lost and confused.
citizenkeen··on Help make mass surveillance of entire populations uneconomical
> Is it legal to have private conversations discussing actual plans for acts of terrorism?

Not in most countries, no.

citizenkeen··on People who use Notion to plan their whole lives
Obsidian's ecosystem is incredible. You can make Obsidian a queryable database, a longform book editor a la Scrivener, or a gilded tabletop RPG campaign book.

Half of what makes Obsidian so great is that they've encouraged modding so heavily.

citizenkeen··on SpaceX Starship rocket explodes minutes after launch from Texas
He has his freedom of speech! So did the person you're replying to. That's what the old American freedom of speech meant: you can say dumb things and other people can say that what you said was dumb.

The new koolaid is "I can say dumb things and if anybody calls me on it, I'm being oppressed." That has nothing to do with freedom of speech, there's no government here.

Sounds like you've been drinking plenty of the new koolaid.

citizenkeen··on Software firms across US facing tax bills that threaten survival
That's not how that works. The law is pretty explicit.
citizenkeen··on Software firms across US facing tax bills that threaten survival
When I took tax law, one of the things that blew my mind is that it can be retroactive.

An exemption might expire, but then be retroactively reinstated. This happens all the time.

There is the tax law that applies to your 2022 income now, and then there's the tax law that will apply to your 2022 taxes in five years.

citizenkeen··on The One Thing I Can’t Stand About Teaching English in Japan (2019)
She.
citizenkeen··on The Ruling That Threatens the Future of Libraries
IP exists to encourage the creation of ideas that are easy to copy.

Land is neither created nor easy to copy.

citizenkeen··on Bob Lee, former CTO of Square, has died after being stabbed in San Francisco
Females makes you sound like a Ferengi. It's weird.
citizenkeen··on Show HN: Coursemate – connect with other self learners
What's the value in limiting by age? Part of the value of self-learning is being able to tackle it at any point in life.

If I want to chat with peers who are self-studying data science or Python or whatever, I don't care if they're 18 or 80. I care that they want to talk about Python or data science and are at the same skill level as me.

citizenkeen··on Moviemaking and gamemaking are converging
As a lifelong Star Trek fan, Strange New Worlds, Lower Decks, and Prodigy are as good as its ever been. The writing on all three is incredibly tight.

Disco and Picard... have been a struggle.

citizenkeen··on Moviemaking and gamemaking are converging
Anecdata: My wife was addicted to the story in God of War Ragnarok.

She walked through the living room during the opening cut scene and exclaimed "Is that Toby Ziegler ZEUS?"

She ended up hanging out in the living room crafting, reading, playing on her phone, or watching her own shows while I ran around smashing and killing, and then would pay attention whenever a cut scene happened.

Movies and games are not the same thing.

But blockbuster amusement park movies and AAA video games increasingly are.

citizenkeen··on Graduate students at the University of Southern California have won a union
Depends on the school, but look up your school's accreditation requirements for hours in class requirements.
citizenkeen··on Rust – Are We Game Yet?
A coworker joked the other day that GDScript will probably onboard a whole slew of C# developers.

1. Learn GDScript

2. Grow frustrated with duck typing

3. Learn that you can switch to C# and still use Godot

Godot 4 having two first class languages is such an odd paradigm.

citizenkeen··on Yellen says government will help SVB depositors but rules out bailout
The cost is that we keep publicizing risk and privatizing gains. SVB took advantage of Trump-era deregulation to make more profit and now that they've screwed up they want help. The people who deposited money at SVB profited from those choices and now they also want a bailout.
citizenkeen··on Graduate students at the University of Southern California have won a union
The schools can't operate without grad students. The entire system is built on the assumption they teach and run labs. Accreditation requires hours of class per term. Striking for two weeks would cancel an entire term of undergrad. The damage to the school's budget and reputation would be enormous, while delaying their grad degrees a term.

Their leverage is significant.

citizenkeen··on Graduate students at the University of Southern California have won a union
That's not how voting works.
