citiguy··on NotebookLM is now Gemini Notebook
Oh wow, this is a great idea. Can I ask what your prompt looks like?
citiguy··on Fix the iOS keyboard before the timer hits zero or I'm switching back to Android
I struggled with family member names too until I realized I can create shortcuts for them (usually just their initials). Now I just type the shortcut and it always works. Joy!
citiguy··on Binance's Trust Wallet extension hacked; users lose $7M
I was a victim of bank fraud a couple of years ago. My bank was totally at fault (I caught it, not them) and they reimbursed me in full.

From what I understand, government insurance goes more towards bank failure, not fraud.

citiguy··on For Delivery Workers in Latin America, Affordable E-Bikes Are a Superpower
Because bikes go the wrong way up one way streets, ride on sidewalks, don't use lights at night and run red lights whenever they feel like it. Think Brownian motion. If there are a lot of them (and there are in New York City) the odds of getting hit by one if you're not super duper careful is high. Worse if you are older and don't see so good or move so fast.
citiguy··on For Delivery Workers in Latin America, Affordable E-Bikes Are a Superpower
I've seen e-bike collisions too. Unfortunately pedestrian's are still badly hurt or killed.
citiguy··on For Delivery Workers in Latin America, Affordable E-Bikes Are a Superpower
It's the same here in New York City. I've seen e-bike accidents and they are no picnic. The city does crack down on them from time to time.
citiguy··on Pee.ie – Public Toilets Near Me Ireland
Any bar or hotel has a public bathroom. Most restaurants as well.
citiguy··on I automated my job application process
I've done this. It can be hit or miss. Get a great team with a strong lead and you'll love them. Unfortunately there's quite a bit of opportunity over there so once you've trained them up, they're always looking for their next (better paying) gig with their new skills. It's rare if folks last past a year on your team.
citiguy··on Syncthing: Open-Source Continuous File Sync with Privacy in Mind
On IOS there's Möbius Sync, which works perfectly with Syncthing.
citiguy··on Polestar eliminates the rear window in latest electric car
Well, I wouldn't go that far. The Acella sucks if you have to depend on it. As does Amtrak. It's expensive and crappy. Public transportation is designed for getting people from the boroughs into the city center, not the other way around. If you use public trans for leaving the city it's very difficult to get from the train station to your final destination, there's just so few options.
citiguy··on Polestar eliminates the rear window in latest electric car
Most places deliver for free (or a minimal charge), so this isn't a big deal.
citiguy··on Polestar eliminates the rear window in latest electric car
I live in NYC (Upper East Side in Manhattan) and I don't think I could live without a car. It's just so nice to be able to leave whenever you want. On your schedule, in your own private space. I don't drive around in the city - driving here is stressful and a huge drag. But if you ever want to go hiking or biking outside the city, or leave for any reason, having your own car is a blessing.

I'm not saying you'll save money by owning a car here, that's definitely not true. It's a luxury item in this city. But it is very nice to have one at your disposal.

citiguy··on Apple introduces M4 chip
You can use the iPad as a second monitor on Windows too and it works nicely. I also use my airpod pro's with my Dell Windows XPS and it's perfect.
citiguy··on Hertz to sell 20k EVs in shift back to gas-powered cars
I rented a Model 3 from Hertz last year and drove about 120 miles in it. Due to the super cold weather (like 12 degrees), plus the fact that I drove in the mountains in New England, and I used the heat (it was freezing and I had my child with me), I had the charge the car 1/2 way there, which made me stop in the middle of nowhere for 30 minutes while I waited at a super charger. Honestly this experience stunk.

I think the Tesla is nice if you don't need to go anywhere too far. For trips stick to gasoline.

citiguy··on Show HN: Use an old tablet as an extra monitor
I've used Duet for this in the past. Works great by allowing me to extend my laptop screen with my ipad screen. https://www.duetdisplay.com/
citiguy··on It's easier and faster to pirate an e-book, than it is to buy it
This is a great idea. I've been wanting to move off gmail for years, I'll try this. Thank you.
citiguy··on Is this the end of crypto?
Wow, I never heard of Betteridge's law before, but it makes perfect sense. TIL something new!
citiguy··on Facebook engineers: we have no idea where we keep all your personal data
The issue is more that they don't care. They don't really need to track it so they don't.
citiguy··on Facebook engineers: we have no idea where we keep all your personal data
Agreed - when I worked in the financial industry there was something called data lifecycle management. Since keeping data around indefinitely meant you could be held liable at any time for anything that happened in the distant past, companies are motivated to track data and delete anything that's no longer necessary for business as soon as possible.

No such law exists for Facebook, so they don't care. Someone needs to pass a law with a big fine attached and then things will change.

citiguy··on We’ll Miss You, MetroCard Machine
That happened a lot. Even worse, you'd buy a metro card, lose it, and find it only after it's expired. Why they would expire I don't know. Once it's expired it no longer works. You could mail it back to them and ask for a refund, but seeing as you aren't sure how much money was on the card, most people just ate the loss.

I for one, am not sad to see this whole thing go away.

citiguy··on Substack is laying off 14% of its staff
Hmm, RSS. That's something I tried and basically forgot about. What's a good way to find decent RSS feeds to follow?
citiguy··on Tell HN: Brother printers now locking out non-OEM paraphernalia
Would you be interested in getting a laser printer? I have a Brother and it works very well. It doesn't come with a huge toner cartridge but I'm still on the starter and it's been more than 5 years. Honestly I don't print super often, but it's a nice to have thing. The build quality is also good. It's a bit of a pain to set up, but once done it "just works".
citiguy··on I’m nearly 60. Here’s what I’ve learned about growing old so far
Have you looked at the free tiers offered by AWS or Azure? It's a great way to learn without spending anything.
citiguy··on NY Senate Bill S5474 proposing a universal single payer health plan for NYers
Property tax in New York City tends to be lowered because there is also an income tax. Try comparing homes outside the city.
citiguy··on Use fzf for tmux session switching
Isn't this just:

$ ssh <hostname>

$ tmux --list-sessions

and

$ tmux --attach-session -t <session #>

?

citiguy··on Use fzf for tmux session switching
You can do everything from the keyboard. No need to ever reach for the mouse. Ever. Once you master it (the learning curve is a bit steep though), you'll never want to go back. I do use my own customized key-bindings.

Also - for long running processes, you can run stuff in a tmux session, go to bed, and wake up hours later and see exactly what happened. You can make the scrollback buffer as big as you want. My scrollback history is 50k lines, and that's totally fine. Of course the history is searchable with vim commands which is also nice.

citiguy··on Audiblegate
This behavior isn't limited to Amazon. In my years of working for IT on Wall Street, I've seen this happen numerous times. Sometimes it's too hard to write the code to ensure the contract is complied with. Other times, the folks who wrote the contract didn't communicate it clearly and/or document it. It's not even limited to American companies. When I worked at a large Swiss bank, they had a similar compliance issue.
citiguy··on When tracking your period lets companies track you
I created a simple spreadsheet that we printed out / filled out each week. It worked great. No need for an app.
citiguy··on Horrible insurance kerfuffle gone good
I have a similar sounding house. I use Amica for my insurance. They are super easy to work with and send you a dividend check back every year as a "thanks for being a customer" benefit.
citiguy··on The paradox of the Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) test
