chrisBob··on First time a Blender-made production has won the Golden Globe
It also looks like it was made in Blender, and it will impact what people think of Blender even if the style is a choice rather than being dictated by the software.

Just like live action can be shot on everything from super-8 to digital IMAX, the story telling is the most important part of a film. There is absolutely no reason not to use Blender if it works for you and your time/talent/computation budget.

chrisBob··on Trump wins presidency for second time
My theory is that legal sports betting makes the economy seem artificially worse for a lot of people. It has had a measurable impact on bankruptcy rates, and is causing a lot of self-inflicted financial stress. Trump's main platform is that your problems aren't your fault, and I think that resonates well with people struggling because they are throwing out their disposable income every month.
chrisBob··on Apple silently uploads your passwords and keeps them
> Best practices for password storage use one-way hash functions (like bcrypt, Argon2, or PBKDF2) rather than encryption algorithms like AES.

That is true if you are running a service that USES passwords. In that case you just need to confirm they match. That is not true if you are running a password manager where the user needs to be able to get their plain text password back out of the system.

chrisBob··on Azure DevOps: some changes are silently hidden during code review
Do you expect your code review to show all changes, or is it ok if some are silently hidden?

Azure Devops will silently hide some of the edits, and the feedback I got was that this "is not a bug". I don't think it is reasonable to expect devs to pull changes and do their own diff. My feeling is that the main advantage of a PR is viewing those changes.

chrisBob··on Sears Homes 1915-1920
Paying interest is horrible. Unless your investments are expected to do better than the interest rate. No way I would pull money out of the stock market to pay off my 2.25% mortgage.
chrisBob··on Officer who ignored NYPD's 'courtesy cards' receives $175K settlement
Police will always show some favoritism, but this seems to be a little over the line. I know that my Army Bronze Star license plate has gotten me out of problems before, and I know someone with a Purple Heart plate that pushed the military plate benefit to the limit. I understand the problem, but it is also really nice when it works in your favor.
chrisBob··on Apple Arcade developers say working with Apple is like in 'abusive relationship'
It is hard to make and market a game.

Apple Arcade is a system where Apple helps as a "Producer", and then you get part of the subscription revenue from people who pay for the Apple Arcade subscription and then play your game.

chrisBob··on Another AI company wrote us and here’s our response
There are different kinds of "art" with different use cases. Sometimes I want to look at something thoughtful and meaningful by an artist making a profound statement about humanity where I can see the emotion and motivation. Sometimes I want something that adds a bit of color to the office. One of those may never be the domain of AI, but if I just want something with a flower and a bird that matches the colors of the rest of the room....?

It is ok if you don't see any value in the second use case. Different people like different "art".

chrisBob··on Apple Intelligence for iPhone, iPad, and Mac
Apple is touting the privacy focus of their AI work, and going out to ChatGPT breaks that. I would be reluctant to use any of their new AI features if it weren't for that prompt breaking the flow and making it clear when they are getting results from ChatGPT.
chrisBob··on Researchers to retract landmark Alzheimer's paper containing doctored images
Not so bad because they were just trying to secure funding that might have gone to research not based on fraud?
chrisBob··on Ticketmaster breach affects more than half a billion users
Showing 0 items for me!
chrisBob··on 'Right to roam' movement fights to give the commons back to the public
Being a parent is hard. I would say that half of the US thinks parents are the problem with kids these days and that a good kid should "spend time outside in the neighborhood like we used to", and then the other half will call the police if your child is out of sight because "aren't kid's <14 supposed to be supervised at all times by an adult?"
chrisBob··on Giant batteries are transforming the way the U.S. uses electricity
Big heavy batteries for my home would be fine. I want big heavy batteries for my house, but they are still so expensive right now. The Anker batteries seems like one of the best deals around to do a home battery system right now, but I get about 2kWh/$. When I bought my IONIQ6 I got about 2kWh/$, and it came with the rest of a car! I really don't understand the economics of home batteries right now.
chrisBob··on No one buys books
Where in Michigan? I regularly visit libraries in Ann Arbor, and Whitmore Lake. Both have libraries that are a wonderful resource for the community, but the difference in funding is obvious.
chrisBob··on Total eclipse of the Internet: traffic impacts in Mexico, the US, and Canada
Note that this decrease in traffic is after a huge influx of visitors. Highways in and out of the area of totality were overwhelmed in most areas. I live in Michigan and drove 2 hours south to find myself in a small town park in Ohio surrounded by other Michigan residents.
chrisBob··on Deploying fiber in the home
I have been leaning towards a wireless bridge. There are not a lot of houses around, so the environment shouldn't be too noisy. My only concern is that I don't want to mount something external on that side of my house.
chrisBob··on Deploying fiber in the home
The garage will have a home office and TV area, so I need some kind of network connection. I was planning to use a wireless bridge, but it seems like it might be worth adding a run of fiber.
chrisBob··on Deploying fiber in the home
I am about to put in a garage 300' from my house. I will already have a trench for power and water. What kind of network cable can/should I drop in the same trench?
chrisBob··on The 'Atlanta Magnet Man' is saving our car tires, one bike ride at a time
I don't understand the "even if" comment. This is the one benefit of these social platforms. If the attention really motivates people to do something good, then have at it!
chrisBob··on Acme Klein Bottle
The bottles are beautiful. My dad still has one in the kitchen that I gave him for Christmas 25 years ago. I don’t think the website has changed any since then either.
chrisBob··on Passwordless: a different kind of hell?
Their regular round pizzas are ok, but now that PizzaHut is gone, the Dominoes pan pizza is my go-to.
chrisBob··on Samsung debuts the first transparent MicroLED screen at CES 2024
Sort of. The problem is that I can't focus on something 2 inches from my eye, so there would need to be a lot of other optics involves.
chrisBob··on Report Phone Spam – Shut down robocallers and text spammers
I feel very lucky to have a phone number from when I lived in northern NY for a few years. There are 4 people from that area code that I might ever want a phone call from, and they are all in my address book. Any other 315 number is safe to ignore.
chrisBob··on Proposal on implementing permanent time zones in the European Union
My employer might be flexible, but I am sure my daughter's school wouldn't let me just pick when her bus picks her up and drops her off.
chrisBob··on Ask HN: Which co-location providers would you recommend in the US?
Is there a reason you want to run your own server? It seems like a lot of headache for this use case.
chrisBob··on US sues eBay for allowing sale of emissions defeat devices
Maybe in terms of CO2, but turbines also don't burn as completely as most piston engine cars. 10k is probably an exaggeration , but the pollution is much worse than the fuel economy indicates.

Similarly, my chain saw probably pollutes nearly as much as my new Honda truck even though it only gets a few gallons of gas per year.

chrisBob··on Honda debuts its first-ever electric autonomous zero-turn riding lawn mower
I assume the biggest difference is the area it can handle. I mow about 2 acres of grass, and none of the little mowers are close to fully replacing my zero turn mower. This seems like it could work well for me.
chrisBob··on The Dog Ate My Homework, or Why There Were No Muses Last Month
I am not really in the embedded space now, but I love getting this monthly newsletter, and was vaguely aware that an issue was overdue. The story was more interesting than I expected.
chrisBob··on Device offers long-distance, low-power underwater communication
It might work at distances longer than 300m, but "they ran out of space on the dock." That seems like such a silly limitation to bring up twice in the writeup.
chrisBob··on It’s time for Americans to embrace small cars
Weight of a vehicle is one of the main risk factors for people in another vehicle in an accident. When you hit a pedestrian their weight is negligible, so it doesn't matter as much, but when another vehicle is involved, it makes a significant difference because you are largely doing a conservation of momentum problem.
