chokolad··on Ask HN: Examples of Top C# Code?
> Don't get me wrong, I think MS SQL Server is a highly capable DB, I just don't see enough of a value add here to justify the price tag, in general.

I suspect it uses what was called MSDE (MS SQL desktop engine), which is free to use and redistribute on Windows. It is essentially headless SQL Server with most high-end features stripped out and resource governor enabled. With all those limitations it is still very capable (probably too capable for the use case) database.

chokolad··on Visiting two new craters in Kyiv
If the large power transformers are hit the repairs are neither that quick nor cheap
chokolad··on Visiting two new craters in Kyiv
I am not sure I follow. My point was that strikes have not really targeted civilian population, they targeted electrical grid.
chokolad··on Visiting two new craters in Kyiv
Main targets of the attack were components of electirc grid, hence relatively low casualty numbers. For some reason western media mentions this only in passing, while pushing what seems to be the misses to the front page.

chokolad··on Hiring discrimination: a problem for men in female-dominated occupations
This is in line with earlier findings in different countries. In a meta-analysis of hiring discrimination studies during 2000–2014, Rich [9] documented high levels of discrimination against men applying to jobs in female-dominated occupations in China [13], France [14], England [25], and Australia [11].
chokolad··on Russia – man in the middle attack is possible by the government now
It could be related to recent recall by Thawte of certificates for various Russian banks and government properties.
chokolad··on Harvard won’t require SAT or ACT through 2026 as test-optional push grows
> College entrance exams do not test for intelligence or academic competence. They test for ability to do well on the exam, which is governed primarily by a student's socioeconomic status.

What is the signal Harvard uses to test for intelligence or academic competence? So far I only have learned that SAT and ACT are not it. Whaat is?

Thank you. That was not in the tweet though, was it ?
chokolad··on GitHub (company org chart) now reports to Microsoft Visual Studio
Can you please copy a quote from that article that states "Github(company org chart) now reports to Microsoft Visual Studio"? This is not a snark, I genuinely trying to figure out what I am missing.

I glanced through the article - it mostly deals with dotnet watch fuckup. This article is 2 weeks old, nothing was known about Nat's decision to leave at that time.

Edited for clarity.

I wonder what the source on this. Twit above just states it as a fact but does not list any evidence.

chokolad··on California moves toward ban on gas lawnmowers and leaf blowers
I bought an Ego+ leafblower in Home Depot about 7 or so years ago. It was around $500 and the best garden related purchase I made so far. It is still going strong, there is literally no maintenance to perform, it's quiet, does not smell, starts instantly. I don't have to remember to discard fuel at the end of the lawn mowing season, no need to do oil changes etc. A+ will buy again.
chokolad··on Against Persuasion
> Whereas books by prominent conservatives tend to have titles like "Demonic : How the Liberal Mob Is Endangering America" and "Liberal Fascism : The Secret History of the American Left, from Mussolini to the Politics of Change". (Not that the left doesn't produce books with similar titles, but they don't get wide distribution, while you've heard of Ann Coulter and Jonah Goldberg).

Interestingly enough Jonah Goldberg is pretty much never-Trumper.

There was this rather janky IDE for Powershell, way before VSCode even existed, called Powershell ISE, that had very similarly looking autocomplete behavior in it's terminal window.
chokolad··on Try This One Weird Trick Russian Hackers Hate
> Seems to me it would be rather easy to detect a system with 1 Russian keyboard vs a system with a default English keyboard and and secondary Russian keyboard. It will probably take about 10 minutes to adapt to this defense.

Modern computing environment is pretty much unusable with just Russian keyboard. You need some way to enter URLs, email addresses, shell commands, etc. Russian keyboard is an addition to English, not a replacement.

A very strong statement. Do you have any proof perhaps ?

chokolad··on The Sovietisation of the Mongolian language and challenges of reversal (2020)
> Russian propaganda is really good and works rather effectively. Which is no surprising as they use techniques mastered during 70 years of communism.

If only. Russian propaganda is hamfisted, direct and not very effective. It's magical efficiency is perpetuated in the West in order to demonize Russia.

If Russian propaganda was that good and effective, Ukraine would still be ruled by Russian-friendly elite and the country would have joined some sort of Russia led economic bloc instead of rushing towards EU and NATO.

Alas, Russian propaganda sucks, at least compared to what USA has to offer.

chokolad··on The Sovietisation of the Mongolian language and challenges of reversal (2020)
> Not necessarily ruling but definitely highly privileged. You definitely could not just travel on a whim inside the USSR. You needed special permission from the government, which was most commonly (but not exclusively) given to people whose job depended on travel.

No, you did not need permission to travel inside the USSR. I don't know about Estonia, but we were living in Tashkent and before I was 13 I have visited Moscow, Leningrad, Sverdlovsk, Alma-Ata, Vilnyus, and several other places. All that travel was pretty much leisure. My parents were engineers - very not elite. On business my mom traveled to Tbilisi, Talinn, Baku and god knows where else. And yes, we lived in "the middle of nowhere in Asia" (aka Tashkent) and had been in pretty much every corner of a huge country.
