chambo622··on Lyft Raises $530M in Fight with Uber
<< and investing in three lincoln escalades

Lincoln Navigator, or Cadillac Escalade perhaps? Interesting points though, even if a lot of them are contradictory. In Los Angeles, I've similarly observed most drivers using both Lyft and Uber. I imagine that the Bay Area market is more saturated and that a driver could be kept busy on just one service, but I get the feeling it's not quite up to that level in LA.

Initial review from TC claims that heat is no longer an issue.
chambo622··on 2015 Chromebook Pixel
Nope, definitely 2013.
chambo622··on 2015 Chromebook Pixel
My main issues with my first gen Chromebook Pixel that I received at Google I/O in 2013:

1) Poor battery life (~4 hours)

2) Lots of heat

3) Instability of Linux environment (with Crouton) made it a poor dev machine.

They seem to have fixed 1) and 2), I'm still nervous about making this a primary machine due to 3). I would have situations where the system would force shut down when closing the lid instead of sleeping/resuming properly. That, and two years ago, no Linux desktop environment supported high DPI screens properly. Maybe this has changed.

Other than that, this looks like an amazing machine. Love that 16GB of RAM is an option - XPS 13, which I'm also eyeing, only goes up to 8GB. 64GB max SSD is a bit of a problem though.

Did you skip the part where Mike agreed to new terms that would allow multiple files?
chambo622··on Huawei Watch
Android Wear is maintained updated by Google on all Android Wear devices - and OEMs can only install apps and watchfaces, they can't mess with the OS like they do on their phones.
chambo622··on Uber Database Breach Exposed Information of 50,000 Drivers, Company Confirms
Virtually every breach disclosure press release I've seen has included a line like this, as if it actually matters. Common practice.

Ha, good one
chambo622··on What Happened with Lego: The price of a brick
Lego shops in the US are the same way. They're awesome.
chambo622··on Dell XPS 13 Review
WiFi range is one of the only problems I have with my Ivy Bridge XPS 13 (2013) running Ubuntu. Mine is not the developer edition. It has an Intel 6235. I forget if Dell shipped the developer editions of this generation with different cards or not.

I'm hoping with newer chipsets and hopefully better support, that things are better with the 2015 models.

chambo622··on Dell XPS 13 Review
The Verge and most other reviewers simply run the tests with the display at some percent brightness - I forget what the Verge uses, but I think it's 50% or 65%.

This is a fairly useless metric. Since different displays have a different max brightness (and perhaps even different brightness curves, I feel like the "percents" aren't always linear), testing at a certain brightness value is the only way to go.

Thankfully AnandTech uses 200 nits for all laptops so we can actually compare these numbers.

chambo622··on Dell XPS 13 Review
There will probably be some hit, but probably not terrible.

I have the Ivy Bridge version; I probably get 4 hours running Ubuntu and perhaps just under 5 with Windows; this is not scientific though. I really should measure it.

chambo622··on Dell XPS 13 Review
Maybe this time Dell will customize that key for the developer edition? One can hope.

Sitting here using an XPS 13 Ivy Bridge (didn't buy as developer edition, but running Ubuntu) and definitely considering jumping for one of these for the battery life alone.

I'd suggest that Microsoft appears to be doing the opposite lately, as evidenced by Acompli and likely Sunrise. But I agree this is generally the case.
chambo622··on Microsoft to invest in Cyanogen
I've been a fan of CyanogenMod for years. My brother and I ported ICS [1] and Jelly Bean [2] versions of CM back to the original HTC G1. I've run it on every phone I've ever owned, and even had my parents running it for a time.

But it's hard to reconcile some of the public blunders that Cyanogen has made since becoming a company. Their OEM relationships with Oppo, OnePlus and Micromax seem haphazard and volatile, and it's not clear they present any real advantages to the consumer. As far as I know, the Oppo N1 isn't supported anymore, and while the OnePlus One is theoretically still supported at least in some markets, Jelly Bean is nowhere to be found, and OnePlus is off doing their own ROMs now.

Distractions like Nextbit's "Baton"[3] (a risky bet on an idea that doesn't appear to work with the majority of apps) leave me wondering what Cyanogen's real value proposition is.

It will be interesting to see where this is headed, and I hope CM remains faithful to their core community and support the maintainers that keep bringing to CM to the masses.

chambo622··on From 0 to $1B – Slack's Founder Shares Their Launch Strategy
Using Slack in a medical context doesn't automatically mean that HIPAA is being violated, but you're right, without compliance, its usage will be limited when discussing individual patients in unobfuscated detail. I hope Slack makes this a priority at some point as I truly believe that this market could be gigantic for them, but I understand that they might be better off targeting other verticals in the short term that don't have this kind of roadblock
chambo622··on From 0 to $1B – Slack's Founder Shares Their Launch Strategy
Demonstrating the broad appeal of Slack - my dad's medical practice has started using it. The current software ecosystem for collaboration tools in medicine is horribly bad and this can actually have tragic consequences. Slack would be wise to take a closer look at this market and see how they can optimize for the needs and requirements of physicians and nurses. Healthcare spending will only increase in the years to come and if they can demonstrate positive patient outcomes and get a few hospital CTOs on board this vertical could explode for them.

chambo622··on Ask HN: What are the best developer conferences for 2015?
Google I/O is always a favorite, although I was disappointed by the change from 3 days to 2 days for 2014, and the conference is always very packed. That said, the enthusiasm and energy level is very high and you'll meet a lot of fantastic people.

Small correction, the GNex was updated through 4.3.
chambo622··on Would you use a Linux based computer, better or equal to a mac in quality?
I have an XPS 13 Ivy Bridge generation running Ubuntu and power management is perfectly fine.

My WiFi does seem rather poor in terms of signal strength/stability compared to other devices I own, however.

chambo622··on “Was isolated from 1999 to 2006 with a 486. Built my own late 80s OS”
That quote definitely doesn't make sense. Maybe he's thinking of Windows ME, widely regarded as being worse than 98? It's an odd thing to mix up for anyone familiar with the two.

chambo622··on Android Studio 1.0
Gradle is pretty tightly integrated with the IDE now, and in general I find myself rarely having to troubleshoot build problems with Android studio. Adding new dependencies is as simple as adding a single line to the build.gradle file, it's great.

Glad to see this reach final. Have been using it since the first alpha release at I/O 13 and it's been getting better and better.

chambo622··on Slack raises $120M Led by Google Ventures and KPCB at $1.12B Valuation
For the most part, this is true, but they don't have it working quite right on Android. Opening the app from the launcher doesn't clear active notifications as it would if you launch the app by clicking on the notification. I've also gotten into a broken state where it tried to open one #channel in the wrong organization and just gave up until I quit the app and tried again.

Hopefully with this new money they can invest a bit more in their Android development efforts.
