cgoecknerwald··on Strongest earthquake in years rattles Southern California
"Only 10 percent of California's 7 million plus homeowners have earthquake insurance – and the number has dropped by more than half since the deadly quake" (2014)

You can get an estimate for an earthquake insurance policy with the California Earthquake Authority.

cgoecknerwald··on Strongest earthquake in years rattles Southern California
I felt this (near Caltech, Pasadena). I spent the entire duration trying to figure out what was shaking my desk.

I hope this doesn't trigger anything larger. Does anybody know if this was close enough to the fault line to possibly affect anything?

EDIT: I see they have updated the article to a 1 in 20 chance.

Well, procrastination can be pretty irrational, especially when combined with strong emotions.

It surprised me to read that they had been informed by John Oliver, because I have always assumed that Oliver's reach would be rather insular because of both its content and nature of distribution.

cgoecknerwald··on Julian Assange to Be Expelled from Ecuadorian Embassy in London
The article does not mention that WikiLeaks claims the expulsion is punishment for revealing corruption within high levels of the Ecuadorian government. [1]

> "WikiLeaks cited the unidentified person as saying the planned expulsion is a response to the organization’s recent tweet linking to a website that alleged money laundering and corruption during Ecuadorian President Lenin Moreno’s time as United Nations special envoy for the disabled in Geneva." cgoecknerwald··on What It’s Like to Grow Up with More Money Than You’ll Ever Spend
> I keep trying to tell [my kids] that money is morally neutral. It does not, in and of itself, make you a bad person. It also does not, in and of itself, makes you a good person.

Being rich individually might not be morally bad, but inequality probably hurts society overall. "No drop is responsible for the flood" yada yada.

> Within a couple of years I was giving away more money than my parents, who had much more money that I had, which they told me was embarrassing to them... I really considered giving it all away at a certain point in my 20s, and I know people who did that. And I wish I could tell you that it was courage that kept me from doing that, but it was mortal fear. I didn’t think I would be able to survive. I was afraid I was a hothouse flower. I didn’t know if I could live on my own.

I think I have experienced this on a much smaller scale - the fear of committing to a career change (out of SWE) due to financial insecurities. Going backwards, financially, is incredibly difficult - it's so easy to get locked into a lifestyle that you simply can't relinquish it up voluntarily.

> I’ve spent a lot of time earning things like post graduate degrees that make me feel legitimate. And those feelings have started to go away. But that’s outsourcing your sense of self.

She's not the only one!

cgoecknerwald··on Tufts student claims innocence after being expelled for grade hacking
Also, what kind of student loans are dependent on graduation? If they were, we'd probably have cases of people intentionally being expelled to avoid debt shortly before graduation.

cgoecknerwald··on Trying to ‘Save’ the Rural Economy
I absolutely agree with your call-out. If a company has to have a "good culture" to attract talent, then so does a county, city, or state. Since I no longer have to live in a state that fights against my rights, I may very well choose to live (and therefore work) in other states for the rest of my life.

However, I do wonder if we are over-conflating "rural" with "conservative." Certainly, they are correlated, but I can imagine it's a lot different to live a rural life in California versus Mississippi.

cgoecknerwald··on Cycling Is Key to Safer, Healthier, More Vital Cities
In Pasadena, we just spent a ton of money trying out the Metro bike-sharing program [1]. Unfortunately, it turns out the key to making a biking culture is not just putting down a ton of rentable bikes. [2]

I'd love to see safer bike highways, but the city doesn't seem able to do more than mark the pavement with sharrows. I understand that Pasadena's urban planning model frequently pits cars and bikes against each other - but, I wonder if we could cut into some of the significant lawn space on each side of the street in order to make bike lanes?

[2] It turns out people in the affluent parts of Pasadena aren't driving because they can't afford a bike.

cgoecknerwald··on How to Procrastinate Productively
Anecdata: personally, procrastination and self-hatred go hand-in-hand.

While the BBC isn't the most authoritative source, this reminds me of this post from recently:

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=17878716

"Prof Tim Pychyl, from Carleton University, Ottawa, who has been studying procrastination for the past few decades, believes it is a problem with managing emotions rather than time."
