century19··on When did people stop being drunk all the time?
White supremacy is basically this, "we are special". Needs to be called out in its tracks. They don't have to explain, but they can expect push back like I gave and can easily clarify if I was misinterpreting, which they chose not to.
century19··on When did people stop being drunk all the time?
That I'm not racist? What is so special about Europeans?
century19··on Norwegian shipping company bans electric cars on board classic ferry route
I've read other people say some cargo ships have been refusing to take EVs, there have been a few of these incidents in the last few years. If so, this looks like an incident that could make banning EVs on boats more common.

What do you think of this story with one person dead?

century19··on When did people stop being drunk all the time?
Never heard it before but what you say sounds correct.
century19··on When did people stop being drunk all the time?
You'd need to define that something special, else you sound really racist. More likely Europe stumbled on a couple of things such as reading glasses (that gave much longer working lives to scientists) or the steam engine that gave an advantage.

century19··on Sao Paulo: A city with no outdoor advertisements (2013)
One of the noticeable things when visiting Cuba is the lack of advertising boards. There are political slogans instead, certainly gives a different feel.
century19··on Shortage of COBOL developers in insurance and banks
Oh that's not the case here, management would love to get off these systems. They see the risks with the age profile of developers, staffing issues, and general ageing tech problems.

Re-writing these systems in another language is almost not an option. They have been written over decades with countless undocumented projects. They are core systems that work the way the business wants (or is built around, for better or worse), and doing a port would take years 100s of millions budgets and have a very high risk of failure.

I've seem smaller/non-core mainframe systems ported and they have been years delayed and plagued with issues, where it is very difficult to specify what is wanted other than something that is the same as the systems that is currently there with all it's weird corner cases.

century19··on Shortage of COBOL developers in insurance and banks
When I've seen this in other banks it's been difficult to keep the junior devs interested in staying with COBOL. In general they wanted to move to other teams.
century19··on Shortage of COBOL developers in insurance and banks
As the other comments say, this is not a myth. Of course banks use other languages and try and put as many work processes as possible outside the core system, but core COBOL systems is very common. Have worked at a couple.
century19··on Ask HN: What did you do when a employer rejected a raise?
As you mostly change jobs every couple of years, I’d say you should be looking for way more than 5%. Unless you are at the top of your pay scale, in which case it’s not worth moving for money, certainly not 5%.
century19··on Vacations in the Soviet Union
BAM is an interesting case. One of the largest engineering projects of the 20th century, and they had to convince volunteers to join.

It's not imitation though, which would be copying their method.
century19··on Google denies training Bard on ChatGPT chats from ShareGPT
Google accused Microsoft Bing of using them for page rankings a few years ago. Setup a sting to show that when you searched for something unique on Google using MS Explorer, shortly afterwards the same search result would start showing up on Bing.

This was seen as deeply embarrassing for Microsoft at the time.

century19··on UK: Food inflation rises to 18.2% as it hits highest rate in over 45 years
(Serious) Food inflation started within the last 2 years. Has there been increased regulation in that time?

Walking is also good exercise. I often walk when I live in a very cycle-able city, to add to low effort exercise. Cycling is too easy :-)
century19··on Ask HN: How is the job search coming along for people who got laid off?
Contracting interviews are nothing like FAANG though, I literally had one that was a 30m chat with a couple of softball questions. Compared to FAANG they are all a walk in the park and barely need any prep.
century19··on Elon Musk gives Twitter staff deadline to commit to being ‘hardcore’
Not working well here then since this should be on the Front Page. Your explanation sounds correct though.

And sell it to who? It's going to have to be seriously discounted because it will cost them years to rebuild what he has already broken.
century19··on Database Review 2021
Correct. And Databricks/Spark is not really a database, it's a processing engine which can connect to many databases.
century19··on Ask HN: How did you stop drinking?
You think there should be more tax on non-alcoholic beer than beer with alcohol? Should be the other way round.

Why? It costs more to produce.
