cempaka··on Coinbase Is in Advanced Talks to Buy Derivatives Venue Deribit
We can't be far off from the SEC allowing Coinbase to list 100x binary options on crypto for U.S. customers with $500 in their account. Deribit probably recognizes that their early mover advantage is in its last innings, good time to exit.
cempaka··on Realtor.com Reports Active Inventory Up 28.5% YoY
With figures like this it's important to keep in context that this percentage change is off of very historically depressed levels. Inventories are still not "high" by any stretch: https://x.com/LoganMohtashami/status/1902390398166982973?t=k...
cempaka··on SNES consoles have been quietly overclocking themselves for 35 years
Thanks, I did search around a bit and didn't hit this
cempaka··on List of Germans Relocated to the US via the Operation Paperclip
Kurt Blome from this list is a real piece of work that will disabuse you of any sepia-toned notions of the postwar U.S.: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kurt_Blome
cempaka··on A New Triumvirate in American Defense with Archer Aviation, Anduril, & Palantir
For "American Defense" just read "domestic counterinsurgency murder drone swarms."
cempaka··on State Dept. to use AI to revoke visas of foreign students who appear "pro-Hamas"
Not that there's actually anything wrong with being pro-Hamas, but you also know they're going to define this as "strongly opposed to Israel" the same way they have with 'anti-Semitism.'
cempaka··on JEP Draft: Strict Field Initialization in the JVM
> For example, given the following classes (styled as Java code for readability)

I believe this implies it's not meant to actually be written in this way by Java developers.

cempaka··on An Attempt to Catch Up with JIT Compilers
The immutable thing is actually being sold as a strength, i.e. "you write your nice clean immutable code, and if you've tagged it as a value type or flattenable, the compiler will figure out it doesn't need a new allocation and will update the existing value inline." I think they see it as in keeping with the Java culture of "you get very good performance for straightforward code" but I definitely agree there's a hazard of introducing an unnecessary impedance mismatch.
cempaka··on An Attempt to Catch Up with JIT Compilers
> Java has something allegedly similar with Project Valhalla, but my observation indicates they completely misunderstand the problem and their solution is worthless.

Hahah spicy take, I'd be interested to hear more. It definitely might not bode well that they opened the "Generics Reification" talk at JVMLS 2024 with "we have no answers, only problems."

cempaka··on Trump allies circulate deportation plans calling for 'processing camps'
All it took to get the Alex Jones set to line up behind building domestic camps was to promise they were for migrants only.
cempaka··on Immune markers of post COVID vaccination syndrome indicate future research
Apparently it's now downvote-worthy to simplify recapitulate claims that were made in bog standard "here's how the mRNA vaccines work!" videos in 2021.
cempaka··on Immune markers of post COVID vaccination syndrome indicate future research
How are they psychosomatically conjuring spike proteins into their bloodstream?
cempaka··on Immune markers of post COVID vaccination syndrome indicate future research
All of the data that would be needed to answer this question is hopelessly confounded and corrupted. There wasn't even reliable tracking of the highly gamed definition of "vaccinated" in the first place. The only real control group that ever existed was in the manufacturers' trials, and the only thing they attempted to measure was prevention of symptomatic infection.
cempaka··on Immune markers of post COVID vaccination syndrome indicate future research
The advertised mechanism of action was that once the mRNA itself had dissipated, the cells would no longer create spike proteins. The idea wasn't that the shots would cause some of your own healthy cells to become targets of your immune system.

When we don't understand how the spike protein is still being created in the first place, I don't think we could say with any confidence that it will stop once cells are cycled out.

cempaka··on DOGE has 'god mode' access to government data
People with malice like Elon Musk have noticed the widespread use of this aphorism and repeatedly leverage it to their advantage.
cempaka··on A tail calling interpreter for Python (already landed in CPython)
Thanks!
cempaka··on A tail calling interpreter for Python (already landed in CPython)
Are there any books or curricula you'd recommend to someone starting out, who wants to learn a more modern style? My main worry is just that everything is going to be geared to C++11 (or worse, 98).
cempaka··on Germany: Far-right political bias ahead of federal elections in X and TikTok
Economic stagnation is happening because the rich have been stealing everything that isn't nailed down for decades now, and "unrestricted migration" is the convenient scapegoat they have settled on (for the moment).
cempaka··on GSA engineering lead resigns over DOGE ally's request for access
Running a shady "car company" for 15 years is a great way to build a roster of amoral freaks with technical skills.
cempaka··on The New York Stock Exchange to Launch NYSE Texas
It's pretty funny when people pitch this as the "savvy" or "smart" strategy.
cempaka··on Ask HN: Tingling in my wrist. Carpal tunnel? What did you do that helped?
Seems like maybe this isn't relevant if your left hand is your non mouse hand, but I've used a trackball for years ever since having issues with the mouse and it completely resolved them.
cempaka··on Daniel Penny Gets Hired by Andreessen Horowitz
Perhaps we could hand the job of "owning money" over to AI?
cempaka··on Senior U.S. official to exit after rift with Musk allies over payment system
Nothing spooky going on here, I'm sure.
cempaka··on [dead]
Without downplaying their influence and ability to meddle in our politics, Israel is in the end an outpost of the U.S. empire. There's certainly nothing in our own record to demonstrate a strong moral objection to maiming children.
cempaka··on [dead]
I removed the editorializing from the NYPost headline, which conflates opposition to Israel with anti-Semitism.
cempaka··on Google Maps in the US Will Change to Gulf of America and Mount McKinley
> I guess the other odd thing about this is how quickly the change appears to have been adopted.

Silicon Valley is fully on board with the Trumpian "vibe shift."

cempaka··on Google Maps in the US Will Change to Gulf of America and Mount McKinley
In "The Man in the High Castle" (Amazon TV series at least) the Nazis in the U.S. launch a "Jahr Null" initiative where they start the calendar at zero and purge a bunch of symbols of the old America (like the Statue of Liberty) and replace them. I feel like this is a kind of corn-pone Jahr Null.
cempaka··on DeepSeek-R1: Incentivizing Reasoning Capability in LLMs via RL
I think there was a brief revival in ballistic missile defense interest under the W presidency, but what people refer to as "Star Wars" was the Reagan-era initiative.
cempaka··on Deadly and Imminent; The Pentagon's Mad Dash for Silicon Valley's AI Weapons
> These classes of drones work much better for a country like Ukraine in a total war on home soil.

Who's to say that's not what Replicator is aiming for? Sans the "foreign enemy" part, perhaps

cempaka··on Leaked documents expose deep ties between Israeli army and Microsoft
Obviously the United States could simply have refused to sell weapons or crucial technology to the Israelis. The impact this could have is often overblown but it's not nothing.

We also could not have taken part in the atrocity propaganda around October 7 which has advanced numerous falsehoods like "mass rape," "40 beheaded babies," or even "1000 civilians killed."
