cauthon··on Crimes with Python's Pattern Matching (2022)
TIL, thanks!

(I love being wrong on HN, always learn something)

cauthon··on Crimes with Python's Pattern Matching (2022)
You _can_ write pathological code like the Everything example, but I can see this feature being helpful if used responsibly.

It essentially allows the user to check if a class implements an interface, without explicitly inheriting ABC or Protocol. It’s up to the user to ensure the body of the case doesn’t reference any methods or attributes not guaranteed by the subclass hook, but that’s not necessarily bad, just less safe.

All things have a place and time.

cauthon··on Amazon to invest another $4B in Anthropic
Amazon famously more trustworthy
cauthon··on Scientific Visualization: Python + Matplotlib (2021)
Why on earth would you want to do exploratory data analysis in a compiled language

This sounds remarkably inefficient?

cauthon··on Zoom Fatigue Is Real, According to Brain Scans
Zoom also has this option
cauthon··on What Is the Future of the DAW?
In the same way I don’t expect a biologist writing for biologists to explain “DNA” stands for “deoxyribonucleic acid”, it’s probably not necessary for a music producer writing for producers and engineers to define “DAW”.

Users here probably feel the same way about HTML, FIFO, DAG, etc

cauthon··on Americans now need to spend 43% of their income to afford a home
They definitely did not fix housing prices. Demand and purchasing power are lower with the higher interest rates, but supply is abysmal for the reasons you mentioned.
cauthon··on Nintendo demoed Switch 2 to developers at Gamescom
Is a switch lite that much larger than a GBA or DS?
cauthon··on BioWare is laying off 50 employees
When was the last BioWare game that was actually excellent? ME2 in 2010?
cauthon··on Two men die in Ironman Cork competition in Ireland
No, it's just pointing out the colloquialism.

"IRONMAN" and "IRONMAN 70.3" are the official names, even though "full" and "half" are how they're commonly referenced.

"so-called" isn't diminutive or derogatory

cauthon··on Ask HN: Any interesting books you have read lately?
Set Boundaries, Find Peace is another good one in this space
cauthon··on The Jupyter+Git problem is now solved (2022)
right, so what's the issue with sharing a notebook (code) and rendered html (results)?

If someone starts playing with the inputs, they're going to lose the outputs you've created unless you have a saved rendered copy anyways

cauthon··on The Jupyter+Git problem is now solved (2022)
> You want to share the outputs so that you can share the results while showing your work.

What's wrong with rendering to HTML?

cauthon··on Advanced Python Mastery
For the purposes of discussion, it'd probably be helpful to describe the issues you would identify during review
cauthon··on LazyVim
what's the current recommended package manager for vim? I used to use vundle but that seems to be unmaintained/deprecated and has broken on recent installs.
cauthon··on The Awk Programming Language, Second Edition
This is amazing, I may never use pandas again
cauthon··on False 911 Calls Increase During Festival as iOS Mistakes Dancing for Car Crashes
I don't have bluetooth in my car. Going over about 10-15 mph seems to trigger it.
cauthon··on False 911 Calls Increase During Festival as iOS Mistakes Dancing for Car Crashes
The automatic detection and activation of "driving focus" in iOS has been extremely accurate in my experience. Seems like it'd be easiest to simply filter out "car crashes" when the phone isn't associated with a "driving" state.

cauthon··on Why did Google Brain exist?
That’s the opposite of what OP is observing. It’s easier to teach a domain expert “good enough” quantitative and technical skills than to teach a pure quant “good enough” domain expertise (and the corresponding intuition)
cauthon··on Astral
thanks!
cauthon··on Astral
just starting to dabble in Rust, and I've seen PyO3 mentioned a number of times for writing rust bindings. What's the difference between Maturin and PyO3?
cauthon··on The first game ‘Easter eggs’ were an act of corporate rebellion
Just to rephrase the OP’s point, I think they are drawing a distinction between “a feature not directly advertised to the user” and “a feature not authorized by whatever chain of command is supposed to be followed at the developer”.

The paw marks are an example of the former, but I believe OP was saying the latter is the fireable offense

cauthon··on System76 Open Firmware
Isn’t their pricing pretty unfriendly? I was looking at the Thelio, which starts at $1000 and then any upgrade costs about sticker price. (e.g. upgrading to the i5-13600K, which retails for $320, costs $315.)

It basically seemed to translate to a $1k markup for assembling the PC (and the case, I guess).
