causality0··on Heretical thoughts about science and society (2005)
Man, has HN grown up? A bunch of thoughtful, critical comments about something written by Freeman Dyson and not even a single example of cow-eyed worship. Never thought I'd see the day. I'm proud of you guys.
causality0··on On being brought up by libertarian economists
He specifically differentiates between arguments and quarrels. You refer to a quarrel.

How do they solve the problem of doubling the component count without reducing the node size also doubling the power consumption and heat generation?
causality0··on PSA: How to keep using adblockers on Chrome and Chromium
You can't just send them a .reg file and tell them to double click on it and hit ok?
causality0··on Boeing Starliner launches first crewed mission
I mean, yes and no. In principle I agree with you but Musk very much does also spend his time reading stuff like this and getting into internet slap fights. Last time I checked he was tweeting 29.2 times a day, or roughly once every thirty minutes of wake time.
causality0··on Boeing Starliner launches first crewed mission
It's very much a "religion of society". There is dogma, sins, shunning, confession, penance, blasphemy, heretics, etc. Just because it doesn't have a creation myth doesn't make it not religious.
causality0··on What no one has seen before: gravitational waveforms from warp drive collapse
At absolute best, it would be soul copying, not uploading.
causality0··on Testing sync at Dropbox (2020)
It felt endless, especially compared to my 100MB yahoo account. I remember sitting there watching the storage counter going up and up and just grinning.
causality0··on The Moral Economy of the Shire
I'm pretty glad that didn't make it into the official canon. The evolution of the world is one of the most fascinating things about the legendarium. Imagine living during the age of the lamps.
causality0··on The Moral Economy of the Shire
Didn't the world start as flat and then Eru made it round to keep Aman away from mortal eyes, being reachable only by those who could see the "straight path" like the elves?
causality0··on 84–24
Unfortunately it does nothing for the View Window and sites still detect mobile.
causality0··on 84–24
I hate when elitist jerks decide my greater than 1080p phone display is somehow inadequate for showing their grand artistic vision and I'm not allowed to look at their photos of an old Mac unless I do so exactly the way they want me to.
causality0··on 84–24
This is why mobile browsers need genuine user agent control, not just some crappy "pwetty pwease give me the desktop version mistuh servuh" checkbox.
causality0··on The Forgotten History of Chinese Keyboards
Why shouldn't it be mainland-centric? Mainland China is 99.5 percent of the population of China. That's like refuting a claim about Americans by calling it "a very non-Pennsylvanian view".
causality0··on Orion's mysterious free-floating planets
The objects ranged in size from about half the mass of Jupiter – the largest planet in our Solar System – to 13 times the mass of Jupiter, suggesting they were likely all to be gas giant planets. Jupiter, which is about 11 times the size of the Earth

Comparing two objects by their mass and then immediately switching to using "size" to refer to diameter is such awful science writing. You would never refer to an SUV as being "eleven times the size of a basketball".

For clarity's sake, Jupiter has 1300 times the volume of earth and 318 times the mass.

causality0··on Tiny number of 'supersharers' spread the majority of fake news
One of the best things about my parents retiring was the cessation of the endless torrent of garbage e-mails they sent me every day.

causality0··on Tiny number of 'supersharers' spread the majority of fake news
Interesting data but technically an orphan statistic. Who is it that's spreading the real news? The same group of people could be responsible for 80% of all news spreading and we wouldn't know from this study.
causality0··on Testing sync at Dropbox (2020)
Yep, I was also screwed by Cerberus. These days the only software products I pay for are those I can also pirate a backup copy of.
causality0··on How to copy a file from a 30-year-old laptop
Sure, but it makes it sound like the laptop being old is what creates the problem, when it's the laptop being busted that's the problem.
causality0··on Testing sync at Dropbox (2020)
Similar here. I was a huge Dropbox evangelist to almost everyone I knew. Then Dropbox limited free accounts to three devices. Then I started getting the emails, texts, and phone calls asking me why the thing I made them sign up wasn't working the way it always had from people who have no experience in the software industry and couldn't understand a company just taking features away from them.
causality0··on How to copy a file from a 30-year-old laptop
How do you transfer files off an Apple laptop from 1994? It's harder than it sounds!

Somewhat misleading. It would have been trivial if the laptop didn't have multiple hardware faults.

causality0··on The QR Backlash Has Won. Restaurants Are Ditching Them for Good.
They don't need to show me prices. Just show me the food. Imagine if Toyota.com refused to show you what a Corolla looks like until you located the nearest dealership and scheduled a test drive.
causality0··on The QR Backlash Has Won. Restaurants Are Ditching Them for Good.
Can we fix restaurant websites next? It's so infuriating when you're trying to figure out where you want to eat and you go to a restaurant's website to see if they have anything that looks good, except they won't show you the menu at all unless you go through their process for locating the nearest restaurant and starting an online order. If the home page of a damn restaurant doesn't a big button that says "menu" and when I click it it shows me the menu, they deserve to go out of business.

causality0··on Transmission of Mental Disorders in Adolescent Peer Networks
Playing along by pretending there's nothing to mention is a step further than feeling you're not allowed to say exactly what you mean. That's the why.

Why aside, if you care about the subject either way you already know what he's talking about, and if you don't know then you likely wouldn't care.

He may be quite incorrect in his judgment of the subject, but, as demonstrated by the flagging, he's correct that he's not allowed to talk about it in many settings, including this one. There's a fair chance I'm not allowed to talk about him not being allowed to talk about it, either.

causality0··on What We're Working on in Firefox
How about making it so all those stupid purple pop-up messages on mobile that tell me what I already damn know can be swiped away instead of sitting on my screen blocking the UI for an eternity every time I dismiss a tab or full-screen a video?
causality0··on Harrassment of scientists is surging – institutions aren't sure how to help
That's exactly the issue I'm talking about: the practice of equating criminal behavior such as death threats or persistent targeted harassment with protected speech such as questioning, dissent, and heckling. When you put forth that someone's employer is responsible for stopping randos from calling them an asshole, a liar, a tool of the Illuminati, etc and say it's the same problem as someone having a threatening stalker or having someone camping at their front door, you make people think you might be lying or exaggerating about the latter.
causality0··on Harrassment of scientists is surging – institutions aren't sure how to help
What a lovely vision that was. Back when we imagined the potential of the internet would make people more like us, instead of peoples' checkbooks making the internet more like them. Rest in peace, digital frontier. You were too beautiful to last.
causality0··on Harrassment of scientists is surging – institutions aren't sure how to help
Lumping attempted murder and people saying mean things on the internet into the same bucket is a mistake with far-reaching consequences.
causality0··on The problem with the Darling 58 genetically modified chestnut tree
For some reason, when you take a process that has traditionally been done with a baseball bat and start doing it with a knife, suddenly everyone comes out of the woodwork to talk about how your knife is too dull and it should either be done with a scalpel or not at all.
