castis··on Better.com CEO fires 900 employees on Zoom call
I imagine 900 1-on-1s could not be done quickly and word would spread very fast that firings were ramping up around the company. This would cause a whole lot of stress for those not being fired, just waiting for a call.

Given the alternatives, the 900-wide bandaid-ripping-off method seems best.

castis··on The Paywalled Garden: iOS is Adware (2020)
Whoops! You are correct and it looks like OP is right. I am unable to delete the News app from macOS.
castis··on I resigned from Twitter
> Banning Trump

After years of letting him say whatever he wanted, they waited until the opposing party was firmly seated and the threat of retaliation was lowest. Good move tactically I guess but it took no bravery.

castis··on The Paywalled Garden: iOS is Adware (2020)
Overall I agree with you, however on that last note: iOS has let you delete pretty much whatever you want for a while now. I just deleted the news app from my iPhone to test this out, successfully deleted. Not just removed from the home screen, removed from the phone.
castis··on Stockholm parents built their own school app, then the city called the cops
Could you go into more detail on why you think this?
castis··on Windows 11 Pro: about 11% slower than Linux on Intel Core i9 11900K
Thats not fairness, thats a known dark pattern being pushed on people.

Not hardly.

All of your 'wuts' are easily verifiable via a cursory search. There are ads for various MS services all over Windows.

https://www.ghacks.net/2017/03/08/windows-10-turn-off-ads-in...

The problem is that less tech savvy people wont know how to turn this off. They dont need to be advertised inside a product they _bought_. Should be opt-in, not out.

MS Teams installation:? Neither linux nor macos install Slack/Discord/etc for you out of the gate.

Telemetry:? Same as Ads; should be opt-in, not out.

castis··on Apple’s new M1 Pro and M1 Max processors
Could you elaborate on what you mean by this?
castis··on IoT hacking and rickrolling my high school district
Free relatively harmless large-scale pen testing! Nice work.
castis··on Is this the simplest (and most surprising) sorting algorithm?
It means they should definitely be on HN where they're very likely to learn new things.
castis··on Covid-19 overtakes 1918 Spanish flu as deadliest disease in American history
It totally counts, but the goal posts are much easier to move when you organize things in a very specific way.
castis··on Facebook has exempted high-profile users from some or all of its rules
I dont actually see a reason to believe that _any_ of them would be telling the truth _ever_. There's no incentive to be honest and there's plenty incentive to not be.
castis··on Web-based editor
Well of course you're "still not sure why"; you've "never used vim". How does one understand something they've never experienced?
castis··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (August 2021)

castis··on Haiti President Jovenel Moïse Assassinated
Why? This website caters to more than just you and other software engineers.
castis··on Brain-Computer Interface Smashes Previous Record for Typing Speed
This is the "next" technology I'm excited about. A cap/something that lets me provide another input device to my machine where I can treat it like a keyboard. Imagine being able to think about a chord and have that input sent to stdin.

What could be extra cool is just imagining a loop construct in your head and it just appears in your text editor.

Is there already a scene for this? Sign me up.

castis··on There are no results for tank man
The point here is that it seems extremely unlikely image search results is the actual result of a sift through the available indexed data. Meaning that some manual mechanism is responsible for the page being blank.
castis··on Have you ever hurt yourself from your own code?
I've been slowly building a homemade quadcopter over the last few years. One of the first times I tested it out it with all 4 motors it immediately headed my direction and caught me in the ankle before I could get out of the way. Nothing a bandaid couldn't fix but it sure sucked.

It's tethered to a test-stand now.

castis··on Twitch will ban users for 'severe misconduct' that occurs away from its site
It is absurd to assume that there were zero firearms of any kind at that event. There aren't zero firearms at children's birthday parties.
castis··on Almost third of UK Covid hospital patients readmitted within four months

Lockdowns and people immediately willing be a part of the contract tracing part.

castis··on Almost third of UK Covid hospital patients readmitted within four months
I wish to point out that the hell you're describing is also temporary, and would have possibly been much shorter if everyone had just gone along with it from the start.
castis··on Rapid global heating is hurting farm productivity, study finds
I can corroborate this, living in Virginia for the last 20 years. We used to get a lot of snow when I was younger, and now we get a lot more days where the heat/humidity is almost unbearable, and a lot more storms that result in less snow, and more ice. Charlotte county recently had about 80% of their electrical infrastructure taken down by an ice storm. Not fun.

Ive attempted to explain the weather as a pendulum, the highs get higher and the lows get lower as the system attempts to find equilibrium while having energy added from outside an otherwise closed system.

castis··on Chrome Used 10x More RAM Than Safari on macOS Big Sur in Recent Test
It would be helpful to maybe elaborate on _why_ that is a stupid thing to say.
castis··on Red Hat statement about RMS’s return to the Free Software Foundation board
For the uninitiated: why was this a bad move by FSF?
castis··on They Just Moved to Austin. Now They Want to End One of Its Traditions
Maybe you should have just told them about the laws.
castis··on They Just Moved to Austin. Now They Want to End One of Its Traditions
Thats great and all, but exercising ones rights as a citizen does not explicitly exclude them from being an asshole.
castis··on They Just Moved to Austin. Now They Want to End One of Its Traditions
Doing some research on the place you're about to sign a lease on seems like an important step. I've done this for every place I've ever chosen to live and it usually works out great. "We were here first" is plenty of justification of a whole lot of things.
castis··on Computer tool spots deepfakes via tiny reflections in the eyes
Cool cool, new automated tests for deepfake libraries.
castis··on Man arrested and charged in Scotland over tweet
The tweet said: "The only good Brit soldier is a deed one, burn auld fella, buuuuurn."

Seems pretty innocuous compared to the stuff we normally see online. Hardly worth government intervention. Interested to see where this goes regardless.

castis··on Reddit's GameStop, AMC surge is the new Occupy movement
Neither can anyone else, which I think is why we are where we are right now. TSLA shot up on what I'd always assumed was the equivalent of a feedback loop. I dont understand what will happen if/when that comes down but my blind guess is that it won't be pretty.
