carlos22··on Nitter and XCancel receive cease and desist notices
And it has much less users, I would say its max 1-5% of X users.
carlos22··on EU Age Control: The trojan horse for digital IDs
Its not. Especially when using US Cloud services. And people do that. Hell even government run schools us GDRP-violating software and force the students to BUY them. The law is nice, the reality is different...
carlos22··on Cannabinoids remove plaque-forming Alzheimer's proteins from brain cells (2016)
Not really sure what you mean, I saw people on 10mg THC wring crazy code in a crazy speed. Some of them need it to be able to focus and think clear. Drugs never work "one way" for everybody. And its not only people its many things that affect how they work (setting, culture, education etc.). And if you think man kind does not need any drugs (including alcohol), if you look at it from a historic perspective we might even need it.
carlos22··on The JavaScript Oxidation Compiler
in the beginning yes, but VCs want to cash out eventually. Look at mongodb, redis and whatnot that did everything to get money at a certain point. For VCs open source is a vehicle to get relevant in a space you would never be relevant if you won't do open source.
carlos22··on Facts about throwing good parties
Roughly the same is true for sexual interactions. Was posted on HN a while ago. And I think it makes perfect sense, if you look at Japan they have all that development and are like 10+ years ahead.
carlos22··on FP8 is ~100 tflops faster when the kernel name has "cutlass" in it
Not ducks, but chickens, was very popular in Germany back in the day: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crazy_Chicken
carlos22··on Making 2.5 Flash and 2.5 Pro GA, and introducing Gemini 2.5 Flash-Lite
That is the capitalism' playbook all along. Its just much faster because its just software. But they do it for everything all the time.
carlos22··on Writing your own CUPS printer driver in 100 lines of Python (2018)
Especially in non common law countries like Germany or France. Not sure about drivers and other vendors but 3rd party ink or even patches to counters, hw modifications to "repair" (better to remove the planned obsolescence) are legal.
carlos22··on Zig's comptime is bonkers good
Well C++ has a history of not really being convenient and makes it easy to shoot you in the foot.
carlos22··on Windows 11 is amazing, I left Linux
I'm not so sure about which W11 hype they are talking about. But the numbers tell different, in Germany win10 was growing faster then 11.
carlos22··on SumatraPDF Reader
Well Android 6 is like Windows 95 ;-)
carlos22··on JMAP – a modern email open standard
That's a bit harsh given all the problems SMTP and IMAP have. They are very dated and have some exotic "features". There is not a single mail client that gets everything right!
carlos22··on Photoprism – open-source Google Photos Alternative
Syncthing can do this and much more. Its the absolute best option to sync anything anywhere. It is very flexible, uses local connections, can only sync on wlan/certain wlans. The only thing that could be better is UX - for novel users its not so easy to understand. But people hanging out on HN should choose it as its just great!
carlos22··on Spin – WebAssembly Framework
It is also hard to contain the DLL/SO, every system has different mechanisms to ensure it can not access 'everything'. Wasm, as build for the browser, has it in its DNA.
carlos22··on TSMC eyes Germany as possible location for first Europe chip plant
Oh thats so not true. The Brandenburg (the state) Ministerpräsident (like Gouverneur) and his team really like to be a big car producing Bundesland. We have Baden-Württemberg (Mercedes, Porsche), Bayern (BMW, Audi) and Niedersachen (VW HQ) and to some extend also NRW (biggest EU plant of Ford) and Sachsen (VW plant). But there is not a single plant Brandenburg. So to be in the game is something they really wanna happen. Especially with something that hyped like tesla. But still there are rules, and you have to follow them.
carlos22··on Signal Fork with WhatsApp Migration
Thats true, Telegram has very good UX. But bullshit crypto with a closed server etc. :-(
carlos22··on Wekan: Open-source, trello-like kanban
Yes that helps but brings in other problems. For example many many security problems in the thousands of used npm packages of meteor and its dependencies.
carlos22··on Wekan: Open-source, trello-like kanban
Wekan uses meteor.js which is really one of the worst frameworks out there. It breaks on so many ocasions and has really bad OS support. Event he current maintainer kind of dislikes the framework... The worst part about metor is that it forces you to use MongoDB!
carlos22··on Qt 5.15 Alpha
Yes but they can add commercial and GPLv3 only modules. Like they did with Qt Charts.
carlos22··on Open-source apps removed from Google Play Store due to donation links
The question should be: When will society accept that capitalism always will kill any form of "don't be evil". There is no choice.
carlos22··on The Biggest Saudi Oil Field Is Fading Faster Than Anyone Guessed
Currently the prices of the used electric cars are crazy. You get a brand new gasoline car for the same price as an 6 year old VW e-up!. The Renault Zoe is still 30k EUR (including battery) for a small car with low to mid range (150 - 300km; depends on the model and year).
carlos22··on The Biggest Saudi Oil Field Is Fading Faster Than Anyone Guessed
Well, we will see. As a German I can not believe it will happen, all our big car companies talking about it for like 8 years now. We had the goal of 1 mio. EV cars by 2020 in 2017 we have 54.99 (pure EVs) and about 160k hybrid. Thats 0.1 % EVs. Our gov pays you 4000 € bonus if you buy a EV, they still have budget for this campaign because of the low EV sales. Even the diesel-gate did not had a real effect, now everybody is buying gasoline cars.

VW announced the I.D. and a new e-up! But it is all only announcements, currently the cheapest car, the e-up! isn't even order-able. BMW announced the i2 (cheaper version of the i3) but it will take till 2021 to get one.

I hope you are right, but at least here it does not look like it.

carlos22··on The Biggest Saudi Oil Field Is Fading Faster Than Anyone Guessed
> Rising popularity of electric cars Currently very slow - needs to accelerate a lot to be significant in 2030 (thats only 11 years).

> increasing vehicle efficiency in general There is not much to gain, the vehicles are gaining weight in the last 2 decades (SUVs etc.). Thats eating up the small improvements in efficiency. A real big improvement is not in sight.

> potential legislation targeting climate change We can hope for that, but with Trump in charge and Merkel in Auto-Germany ruling the EU it won't really happen. Hopefully this will change.

carlos22··on Ask HN: Low-maintenance alternatives to Gmail?
Kolabnow is rather expensive and we had a lot of problems with it. The up-time was also very upsetting. Experience was 2 years ago.

Self-hosting of Kolab is not very flexible and a lot of work. We use self-hosted SoGO now and are very happy.

carlos22··on Java SE 8 business users must buy a licence from Jan 2019 to receive updates
Older Eclipse based software does not work with Java 9.
carlos22··on Ubuntu 18.04 with Unity8
> I've never seen laptop hardware that Linux "works out of the box" on, and I've installed it on at least 15 laptops in those ten years.

Buy any > 2 year old Dell Latitiude and it will work out of the box. Maybe the (IMHO useless) fingerprint reader not, but all other stuff will work. Had at least 5 different models.

Also highres screen is an issue which is not fixable because you need to fix every software. Same applies to Windows in this case but it does a better job in pixel scaling non-HiDPI apps (but they are still ugly as hell in many cases).

carlos22··on Show HN: Cross-platform desktop applications with PyQT
QLabels support a subset of html and are styleable with simple css rules. But yes no animations or stuff like that.
carlos22··on Qt 5.10 released
Now the focus of QML is mostly embedded where it really shines. Desktop and mobile is still possible with qml.
carlos22··on Ask HN: What about a platform for hiring teams instead of individuals?
Yes, but then you are in the game. And soon you spend more energy and time in building your marketing instead of the things which made you a good developer... It is the market logic which drives us to solutions which aren't really one (but we think we are forced to).
carlos22··on AAC Licensors
Better then mp3 and embedded devices (e.g. cars) almost never have support for opus (or even ogg)...
