caractacus··on Twitter Names Jack Dorsey Chief Executive
> Twitter is the de facto messaging platform

In what world?

caractacus··on The student who discovered water on Mars says it was a 'lucky accident'
This is the BBC's Newsbeat - it's the news program for Radio 1, the beeb's pop music station. So it's (i) dumbed down and (ii) better if it has some kind of music connection.
caractacus··on Apple’s approach to privacy
If you were paranoid, it wouldn't take much to conclude that "worked with" and "allowed" could mean that this doesn't imply that there weren't or aren't backdoors or access that occurred without Apple's knowledge or approval.
caractacus··on Chris Poole
I've often linked Chris Poole's approach to this with Matt Haughey at Metafilter. I can remember being amazed at how well mathowie moderated metafilter with a remarkably light touch and yet still set the tne of the site. Moot was less keeping the users in line than keeping the rest of the world out but their ability to not interfere at times when I think most of us would want to say or do something is an incredible skill.
caractacus··on Hit Charade
Read up on AKB48. Japanese girl "group" with more than a hundred members split into teams. Often the record company will let fans vote on which members will become part of the next single. To vote? You have to buy the latest CD (and physical CDs remain huge in Japan). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AKB48

caractacus··on Spotify Just Got Real Creepy with the Data It Collects on You
> GPS and motion sensors. Why could they want this? Maybe they will switch up your play list when you go for that run. Seems plausible.

They introduced a running feature a few months ago that does, indeed, attempt to match the bpm of a playlist to your running cadence.

> Contacts. Ok, everything is social, so maybe they want to send your current track to other spotify users in your contacts. Seems plausible.

Share a playlist with a contact. Share a track with a contact. Etc etc. I'm surprised this wasn't already in there if it's really a new addition.

> Photos. Not sure about this one.

Might be related to running. Strava, fr'instance, lets you add photos taken on your run. Or might just be to let you adorn a playlist with your chosen photo.

> Sharing your information with partners.

Doesn't everyone? Isn't this standard boilerplate? Spotify are attempting brand tie-ups in many areas so I can't see this as something out of the ordinary.

caractacus··on The daemontools family
What surprises me more than anything about this is that ntlworld.com still exists and still resolves.
caractacus··on TauCharts: Data-focused JavaScript charting library
Cool. Look forward to hearing more.
caractacus··on TauCharts: Data-focused JavaScript charting library
What I want with such charting solutions is something to export or copy and paste data from excel and put it into a chart. Just that. No need to manually edit a javascript file or html code beyond customising the appearance once the data is in there. Is this available somewhere?
caractacus··on Ex-Googler says she exposed company-wide pay inequality with spreadsheet
You may have reached what you thought was a statistically significant size but unless you were selecting perfectly randomly - which I doubt you could in such an exercise - then it could not be called truly significant.
caractacus··on New iPod touch
Or the music quality. Same as the iPhone (which is pretty good, admittedly)? Or better?
caractacus··on Reddit Chief Engineer Quits After Less Than Two Months on the Job
It's /r/subredditdrama played out in real life. It has to promote the strangest company culture when your just-departed CEO has been suing another firm for gender discrimination in a wildly high profile and contentious court case (quite apart from the fact that it would take her gaze from reddit); when your previous CEO left in a huff after he wasn't allowed to move the office closer to his home; and when the founders hover in obscure and unclear board positions. And then talk trash about each other on the site that they all controlled at different points.

So many levels of meta oddness.

caractacus··on Ellen Pao Is Stepping Down as Reddit’s Chief
> She didn't do a good job of it, but at least she tried to stand up against some of the worst of Reddit.

These are two separate things. The fact that she tried to stand up against some of the idiots that inhabit the site doesn't mitigate against the fact that she did not do a good job. She should have resigned or been fired for not doing a good job regardless of how well she coped with the jerks en masse.

caractacus··on United Airlines System-Wide Computer Problem
Not a word about it on United's web site. Flight status page doesn't load correctly. "Today's Operations" gives an error message. United's Twitter is silent.

Meanwhile news articles and twitter complaints abound. http://mashable.com/2015/07/08/united-computer-problems-flig...

caractacus··on [dead]
Ha. First thing I compared it to as well. It's a micro-storm in a very large tea-cup. Reddit will survive and the tiny and temporary (and already abandoned) actions of a few mods might shoot a few people off to Voat or another site but it won't do anything for the vast majority.
caractacus··on With regards to Apple Music
I think you're mistaken if you think that the majors would voluntarily relinquish three months of royalties from trials of Apple Music just to hurt Spotify, when they could simply pull their content from Spotify a la Taylor Swift to hurt it much more. This is Apple trying to push costs wherever they can and ignoring the indies during negotiation. It wouldn't be the first time that indies get the raw deal from a large corporate making decisions with the majors in mind.
caractacus··on America's Unwanted Ivy Leaguers Are Flocking to India
"Flocking" = we don't have any real numbers but here are a couple of people who went to the US and then came back, and look! we use that unicorn word that no current startup article is complete without so you can trust us.
caractacus··on The elephant in the discotheque: the Bee Gees (2014)
I highly recommend the book this is taken from: Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! The Story of Pop Music by Bob Stanley.

Bob Stanley was a music journalist who founded the beautiful group St Etienne. There is no one I can think of better qualified to talk about pop and dance music and their effect on the soul and society.

caractacus··on ALL CAPS AS a SERVICE
CAPITAL IDEA CHAPS!

NO USAGE CAPS, I HOPE?

caractacus··on An Analysis of Nespresso
Wow. The pods are 70c a go in the US? Amazing to find a product that is substantially cheaper in the UK. It's 30p a go here - 45c or thereabouts.
caractacus··on An Analysis of Nespresso
I'm with you on this. There's some great coffee in London - some wonderful nutty and bitter tastes in places around Soho that Nespresso doesn't seem able to replicate - but I'm perfectly happy with a pod or two in the morning at the cost of 30p instead of the £3 I'd pay at Soho Grind or the interminable wait for the laid-back bearded chaps at Carpo to stop chatting up the black-clad chocolate servers and make my damn drink.
caractacus··on Free mobile voice, text and data plans coming to UK
Well that's not on when I pay good money to Vodafone for the same service.
caractacus··on Spotify as a simple case study in making something people want
No, the record companies own about 20% of Spotify. The rest is VC and founder owned.
caractacus··on Meerkat Founder on Getting the Kill Call from Twitter
Less interesting to hear about the call from Twitter (hardly unexpected in the context) than about plans for the future. Given Twitter's dislike of external applications, giving Meerkat a decent API and dev platform could make a difference in usage compared to Periscope which may end up too tied to Twitter.
caractacus··on Follow the White Ball: The torments of snooker’s greatest player
Depends how you define it. O'Sullivan hasn't been consistent enough and simply attending enough Championships to win that many titles. But in terms of talent, no one really competes. O'Sullivan in his prime would have beaten Hendry two times out of three.
caractacus··on Valve CEO: 'Pissing off the Internet costs you a million bucks in just 2 days'
Quite. There's nothing quantifiable in what gaben said but a statement like this is more than enough to have that million dollar figure quoted and re-quoted in discussions about poor gaming company decisions, how to cut losses, the right way to respond, etc.
caractacus··on Million Dollar Cat Billboard
Terrible website. Explains very few of the core questions people will have.

Size of a default square?

Where is the square I buy going to be on the billboard?

Where in each city will the billboard be placed?

Who are you people?

Why should I trust you are going to do it?

How much do you think will be left over to donate to charity?
