Don't let your distaste of crypto ruin a cool project otherwise
c23gooey··on Crohn’s Disease: Is the Cold Chain Hypothesis Still Hot?
Agree with the stress aggravator.

I've had two severe Crohns flare ups (one required a bowel resection), both of those flare ups can be contributed to major stress incidents (first one divorce, and second one the death of my mother)

Otherwise I only have mild symptoms that are only annoying more than painful

c23gooey··on Ask HN: What was it like to use BBS?
LORD was fantastic! Had so much fun playing that back in the day
c23gooey··on My experience of losing a friend to heroin (2020)
I think people experience the euphoria of opiates differently. Anecdotally - i've never found opiates compelling. I appreciate their ability to numb severe pain, but they don't do anything for me as a mental release. Whereas a good friend is the opposite, he loves the feeling opiates give him and gets quite a kick out of them. He is very careful around them because he understands that he could easily slip into a full blown addiction with them. BTW - this friend has a stable job, a loving wife and 2 kids.

That was a great episode. The one I remember from the taxi driver was "went through him like lightning through a wet dog"
c23gooey··on China won't be luring foreign tech talent any time soon
This reminds me of Gough Whitlam, former Australian Prime Minister ~1975:

...Gough also took aim at Sir Winton Turbull when the rural MP shouted: 'I am a Country member'. Whitlam quickly responded with 'I remember', which earned an applause from both sides of the house.

c23gooey··on Reddit CEO admits to altering user comments that were critical of him
thank you for the alternative explanation. your are most likely correct and my comment was a bit over the top for the situation.

i still stick by my point that there is a level of pedantry on HN that really turns me off

c23gooey··on The Challenge of Consciousness
> What I mean is that self-awareness is not automatic.

Without regard to the question at hand - I think the lack of self-awareness is fairly evident in western society in general.

To extrapolate, would mean that a large portion of western society is not aware of their own consciousness or the influence it has on their day-to-day lives

c23gooey··on Reddit CEO admits to altering user comments that were critical of him
this sort of snarky comment is exactly what turns me off HN.

what exactly is the point of your comment. do you think you are providing any sort of service to the readers of this thread.

does the fact that the OP was incorrect in a minor part of his comment invalidate the rest of it?

does your comment make you feel superior in anyway?

in the future, when posting a retort please ellucidate.

c23gooey··on YC's 2015 Reading List
Great point - but while you're breaking down the list to non-relevant characteristics of the authors, can we get a list of their:

- nationalities - skin color - sexual preference - left handed/ right handed

I can't make a politically motivated decision without these

c23gooey··on Ask HN: How do develop a side project when you have a 40hr/week job?
Second this.

I have young kids and am trying to build a side project.

I have found that an hour or two at night and maybe a block of 2-3 hours when my wife can take the kids to friends' place is the best i can hope for.

Its hard to get into any flow in these timeframes however its forced me to organise and prioritise my side project work more than i otherwise would have.

c23gooey··on The problem of sleeping without sleeping
thank you for that concise explanation. i love Dali's flowery language but its awful for actually getting a point across.
c23gooey··on How I’m Handling My Depression Using an App
The word depression is just as over used as the word startup. It was only a matter of time before the two came together.
c23gooey··on Working remotely is hard
I agree that co-working can do as much as the online tools. Not to discount the importance of being able to effectively communicate with the people you are working with, however I have found that being around others who are getting their own thing done is inspiring and motivational. Working remotely in a co-working space has given me the best of both worlds - I get the social aspects of being around others and the motivation of being around others working, but no one bother me about my work cause they are not involved.
c23gooey··on Scrum is the new waterfall
you seem to be mistaken about what Agile actually is.

i suggest reading the Agile manifesto [1] to get an understanding.

c23gooey··on Hitler's Drug Addiction
Its an interesting point - well known high performers in many walks of life are documented drug users. To add to the list above, here are two more that im familiar with:

Stephen King has trouble recalling writing a number of his books during the eighties due to alcohol and cocaine abuse. [1]

Sigmund Freud was a cocaine abuser up until the point he started to become a more noted researcher [2]

c23gooey··on We're Replacing Comments with Something Better
I believe s73v3r is saying that using third party services allows you to dedicate more time to innovation, rather than spending your time coding services that already exist and are probably better than you can write yourself anyway.

c23gooey··on How to Hire When Everyone Wants to Found Their Own Startup
Sorry to nitpick, but I think you're getting your metaphors mixed:

You can put lipstick on a pig, but its still a pig http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lipstick_on_a_pig

You cant polish a turd http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/you_can%27t_polish_a_turd

>Try to take in that message first, and when you think you have the slightest idea what it's like to live like that, maybe you are then qualified to add a response.

How ridiculous. Just because a person isn't suffering or doesnt have a true understanding of the same agony as the blogger, doesn't mean they are not allowed to offer help.

Whats so wrong with people trying to help? Should we just say - "Thanks for the insight. Now back to my own world"
