What a miserable, selfish view of the world you have

c23gooey··on Don't post generated/AI-edited comments. HN is for conversation between humans
Taking the time to write something, and read over it is a better skill than asking an LLM to do it for you.

Also, quality doesn't come from any of those points you've mentioned. Quality comes from your ability to think and reason through a topic. All those points you mention in your first paragraph are excuses, trying to make it seem like there was some sort of effort to get an LLM to write a post. It feels like fishing for a justification

c23gooey··on Ask HN: Is it time to fork HN into AI/LLM and "Everything else/other?"
The UI might be the same but there's clearly been a lot of work done on the backend of the site in that time

edit to add: Don't gatekeep by using the pejorative "newcomers". Unless you're PG there will always be someone who has been around here longer than you

The documentary "Century of Self" by Adam Curtis [0] certainly opened my eyes to the damage that Bernays has inflicted on society in general.

c23gooey··on Mastodon hit 10M users
Agreed, there's a few instances of this sort of thing that come to mind. Sometimes you have a good thing, but it's not until some external thing changes that the right conditions for uptake are met. One such example is the game Among Us which was out for two years before covid hit and it found exponential growth after that.
c23gooey··on Reddit has been down for more than an hour
HN is getting hugged by the holy trinity of major sites outages, major product launches and major tech layoffs.

Any one of those is usually a fairly large event around here, all three at once is another story

> A site that optimizes for content that people heavily interact with (engagement) is different than a site that prioritizes the relationship type between users

I think that's hit the nail on the head. In a neutral environment, a user would be shown a feed of friends posts with ads mixed in for their demographic.

In an optimised for engagement environment, a user is shown posts that are known to increase engagement and quite often those posts are inflammatory.

This engagement environment is much more likely to expose people to extreme views

c23gooey··on Slack is the opposite of organizational memory (2018)
We follow #1 and #2 in our company. I like #1 because it definitely helps create a more open information environment. It often takes a little while when a new employee starts to train them into this. Quite often they will come in and ask all their questions in DM, I'll always politely push them to ask the questions in the appropiate channel.

I like #2 because it keeps the channels quieter when conversations are had within threads.

Something we've done recently is cut down the number of channels. We essentially just use #general and #random now. We're only a small company (<20 employees) so it facilitates a better information flow if everything is in the one place. One thing we also do, is if a thread contains valuable information we will transcribe this into our documentation system (currently confluence)

Are all the comments on this thread just people commenting based off the headline?

c23gooey··on Ask HN: Do you upvote direct replies?
Would you, for example, upvote every comment in this post? Even if it reached 1000 comments. Surely not all the replies would be adding to the conversation, however if all of them are upvoted then it would dilute the value of an upvote
