Could also be that most young/modern Chinese have an apathetic split-mind: don't give a shit about Google and don't give a shit about who is blocking them from it or why. They aren't uninformed, they just don't care.

I'm in China and noticed this! Tried to download a PDF from S3 and it took at least 5 tries before I could get it.

It's not blocked in Shanghai. It's probably due to the ~10 underwater fiber optic lines outside Qingdao that got cut recently.

Downloaded it. Experience is a bit strange, ex: swipe down to refresh doesn't appear to do anything, then after a 1 min lag it refreshes the content. I love being able to handwrite on my photos, but really hate not being able to save my own stuff. Also, seems there's no way to be updated when people comment on or like your content? Had to delete it. Hopefully the 2nd run smooths some of this out :) Still, the handwriting alone was very cool.

We see a lot of this in China, with apps like Papa (like Instagram adding an accompanying audio clip). Most people are tired of reading here and would prefer sound or, now, video (we just got a Vine clone).

With that said, my thought is: why not be able to just press play and stream the experience, allowing me to listen to everything with my friends that day (like a personal podcast)? I haven't installed this app, but the screenshots look like I have to press play on every single one. Vine autoplays, which adds some feeling of this to their service.

Off-topic, but how does it work that when I load that site I get an advertisement for The Lorax (http://i.imgur.com/y6eke4T.jpg), a character with whom John Dryden happens to share several key features? I understand showing ads by keyword (the alcohol ad as alcohol is mentioned in the article several times...) but facial similarity based advertising?! I'm speechless.

Nah, most people are just genuinely concerned about him, especially when he disappears. I'm in China -- if I did this in NYC, I wouldn't have done it. But that type of malicious intent is far, far less here. When he's gone, there's lots of talk online about where he went and people start looking out for him. I just made a way to scale and centralize it.

Not bragging here, but a while ago I used IFTTT to create a system where I created a quasi-alert system for a local legend/mentally ill guy who wanders the subway in my city. Everyone knows him, but sometimes he disappears for a month or two and people online start to talk about where he went.

I began wheatpasting a photo of him with a QR over his mouth (he often says the government/big corporations are trying to kill him) and the phrase "have you seen me?" around the subway stations he's usually on. The QR code went to an SMS #, which caught an IFTTT trigger to turn that SMS into an email (to an anonymous Gmail account) which, upon receipt, caught another IFTTT trigger and posted the text of their message to a Tumblr account -- one seamless workflow. This way, people could in more-or-less real time keep tabs on him and how he's doing.

It went well until the police took down the posters, of course. Haven't thought of a way around that, yet.
