btgeekboy··on 80% of tech could be built outside IT by 2024, thanks to low-code tools
Software engineers don't have a monopoly on system design and debugging skills, not by a long shot.
btgeekboy··on OBS Studio 27.0
The command’s output is pretty straightforward. It tells you the percentage of CPU you have available to use. Leave it running and try something super intensive. It’s much easier to get my Intel MBA to throttle than my work-provided 16” MBP.
btgeekboy··on OBS Studio 27.0
Throttling is one thing that can cause high kernel_task usage, but you can also run ‘pmset -g thermlog’ to verify whether it’s actually due to throttling/cooling issues.
btgeekboy··on American Solitude: Notes Toward a History of Isolation
That, and the schools can be, on average, better.
btgeekboy··on The anus is an evolutionary marvel
> Seems so unnecessarily dangerous.

I agree, but it hasn't killed enough to evolutionarily matter.

btgeekboy··on Modern Javascript: Everything you missed over the last 10 years (2020)
Regarding ORM, it's typically paired with Sequelize or Prisma. (I'm personally using the latter.) I've built Django apps in the past (it's actually how I learned Python in the 2.5 days), but what's nice about Node/TS is that the frameworks are more loosely coupled so you can pick/choose your best components. For example, while I mentioned the ORMs above, you can even go one step further and use a backend headless CMS like Strapi, which will get you the ORM + admin interface that you'd get from Django models.
btgeekboy··on We’ll stop selling our Code Editor app for iOS soon
> (For comparison, even Transmit iOS, discontinued in 2018, continues to work fine today for those who purchased it.)

This is not true. A recent iOS update broke Transmit; it no longer launches and says it needs an update.

Some platforms (at least MacOS) hide the scrollbars by default if you’re using a trackpad.
btgeekboy··on Volkswagen launches its first all-electric SUV, the ID.4
They’re bought primarily either as status symbols or for business use.
btgeekboy··on Explaining 4K 60Hz Video Through USB-C Hub (2019)
I have an OWC Thunderbolt 3 Pro dock; I use it with my work-issued 16" MBP and 2020 MBA. I have a 1440p and a 4K screen attached; both running at 60Hz.

It was rough at first when I picked it up last year. However the driver updates in Big Sur seem to have fixed my complaints, particularly with the MBA that almost never worked.

It works pretty well now. I unplug my work laptop and swap it for my personal one when I want to work on personal projects, and things just work.

My biggest complaints about this dock now are that the fan is loud, and it only charges at 60w. I worked around the noise by attaching it to the underside of my desk, so it's pretty hard to hear now.

btgeekboy··on Word usage guidance and alternative terms
The point is to remove the positive connotation for "white" and negative for "black." Nobody's implying your blacklist-turned-blocklist has anything to do with race.
btgeekboy··on Word usage guidance and alternative terms
"This was denylisted" works perfectly fine. It's no different grammatically from "This was blacklisted;" the only difference is you aren't used to it yet.
btgeekboy··on Amazon 2020 Letter to Shareholders
Last Week Tonight recently did a show on the meat packing industry. The lack of bathroom breaks was specifically mentioned. https://youtu.be/IhO1FcjDMV4
btgeekboy··on Ask HN: What under-the-radar technology are you excited about?
What happens today when some kids move road cones so they point to oncoming traffic as a prank? You can have a car react the same way I did in that situation - slow down, take in the entirety of the situation ("cones say X, but that leads you into oncoming traffic") and ask the operator for directions or maneuver accordingly.

Just because some Teslas are dumb enough to drive into barriers today doesn't mean we can't continue improving the technology.

btgeekboy··on Arm Announces Armv9 Architecture: SVE2, Security, and the Next Decade
In my personal niche, there's also http://stratux.me. Commercial competitors are making their own devices that cost hundreds more, but for those willing to put in the few minutes to assemble the RPi and USB dongles into an enclosure, it's very cost-effective.
btgeekboy··on The Raspberry Pi can boot off NVMe SSDs now
Agree. Lots of Synology/QNAP devices out there that are designed to be a NAS in form factor but also support things like VMs, containers, and the like. Some of them even do support NVM.
btgeekboy··on Focalboard – a self-hosted alternative to Trello, Notion, and Asana
Hi! I've used it for a few things, such as purchasing Microsoft Flight Simulator, and various WSL distros.
btgeekboy··on Vim Clutch – A hardware pedal for improved text editing (2012)
Neat. I’ve got a similar project myself, but for I’m using an Arduino Pro Micro (Atmega32u4), which emulates a standard keyboard. Program it to send your chord of choice when pressed.

I’m planning on using mine as a mute button for conferencing. Last major hurdle is trying to get the global hotkey configured to send a different keystroke to my conferencing app.

btgeekboy··on Git: Malicious repositories can execute remote code while cloning
Isn't git distributed with the Xcode command line tools?
btgeekboy··on United B772 at Denver on Feb 20th 2021, engine inlet separates from engine
The other engine provides enough thrust to keep the plane airborne. The pilots (and likely other onboard systems) compensate for the asymmetric thrust with the rudder.

As scary as it looks, this is one type of event that pilots routinely train for, both to get their initial multi-engine certification, and on their airlines’ simulators.

btgeekboy··on 20k honey bees took over a tech company’s empty office during lockdown
I called a local apiary to remove a wasp nest in the Seattle area. They charged a flat $200 for wasps, and $0 for bees.
btgeekboy··on Proprietary Software Is Often Malware
Correlation is not causation. I don’t see anything on that list that is a consequence of the license.

For quite a while, Windows was the holdout. MacOS wouldn't even flinch if you moved it to another machine; Linux might have needed a little help finding its root volume or NIC but would otherwise be happy. Windows, however, would fall over with a BSOD.

btgeekboy··on An Introduction to ZFS
That's pretty much why I went with LVM + ext4 for my home server. Every once in a while, when I need more space, I toss another SSD in and expand the volume. Easy peasy. Though my storage needs aren't huge; I'm only up to 4TB of total SSD space.
btgeekboy··on We can do better than DuckDuckGo
I’ve tried searching for stuff related to Alexa Presentation Language (APL) a bunch of times. It never finds anything useful; I throw “!g” on the query string and what I’m looking for is typically the first or second result.
