bsagdiyev··on FCC Broadband Map
Exactly this. I filed an FCC complaint regarding speeds at my house and got Spectrum off their ass and investigating. Our neighborhood is a new build with fiber instead of coax that should be getting 500mbit upload on their Gig plan but not all houses receive it, mine included. Finally spoke to a local supervisor yesterday after going through first line support for over a week and he noticed that people even on the same node receive it while I'm stuck at 35mbit upload so that's progress and hopefully a catalyst for getting it resolved finally.

It just looks sad right now: https://www.speedtest.net/result/c/063d05b6-eae5-4534-99a3-f... -- that upload is pitiful for fiber.

bsagdiyev··on Why it’s hard to buy deodorant in Manhattan
That's an insane price. I just paid ~$6 for two sticks of regular Old Spice stick deodorant the other day.
bsagdiyev··on The stick shift might survive the electric revolution
VW has notoriously "squishy" accelerators, so much so that you can get a pedal tuner to try and make it more responsive. Our family Tiguan is like that and the auto box in it shifts like garbage, but not a bad car otherwise.
bsagdiyev··on The stick shift might survive the electric revolution
Lucky it was a story and not a money shift!
bsagdiyev··on The stick shift might survive the electric revolution
Yep, it's typically how I get up to speed if I'm driving my girlfriends car. NA6 Miatas had no power stock, so a nice full pot through 1, 2, and 3 then up in to 5th will get me to ~50-60 mph and in to cruising revs.
bsagdiyev··on What to do if a nuclear disaster is imminent [pdf]
Do it. I got my license from a free course and test in San Diego and have enjoyed it ever since. Finding info can be pretty easy but I'm on my phone so can't provide links right this second.
bsagdiyev··on Przewodów village in Poland hit by two Russian missiles, two dead
Sure -- I was just refuting that only Ukraine was using them. This appears to have been an AA miss causing an accident.
bsagdiyev··on Przewodów village in Poland hit by two Russian missiles, two dead
Or Russia as a surface to surface as of this summer.
bsagdiyev··on What to do if a nuclear disaster is imminent [pdf]
Let me just login in to the intern... oh right. Well the radios should still wor... no? Shit. I need to pay for clean water from my neighbor.
bsagdiyev··on My project is now an easter egg in Microsoft Flight Simulator
That was a fun one to do in IT class back in secondary school. That and Doom LAN games.
bsagdiyev··on Automatic snow tires throw chains at your wheels [video]
These are on the public transit buses that service the Crestline, Lake Arrowhead and Running Springs areas in California. They're a neat thing for sure and definitely needed up there in the snowier winters.
bsagdiyev··on Tesla rival Rivian posts losses of $1.7B, with worse to come
Raleigh area I've been seeing them almost daily.
bsagdiyev··on Russia to Withdraw Troops from Kherson
I think there's a not insignificant amount of the Russian population that has been fed, and thoroughly believes, this was something they had to do and Ukraine is full of literal Nazis.
bsagdiyev··on Russia to Withdraw Troops from Kherson
That's the name of the city and the oblast, weird how that works. They never fully took it but they tried. We've seen how that went recently.
bsagdiyev··on The unintended consequence of EVs: More demand for manual transmissions
Still missing the point. I don't care that it shifts faster, I like driving a manual and do it for my enjoyment. This isn't a numbers game or who can master the clutch. This is a consistent opinion I see and I don't understand it. Let people drive a damn manual and enjoy it for what it is.
bsagdiyev··on The unintended consequence of EVs: More demand for manual transmissions
I've driven (daily even) a 600awhp car and didn't feel that way. I'm not trying to beat anyone on shifts, I'm trying to enjoy my car and drive. It's not always a numbers game.
bsagdiyev··on Searchable List of Mastodon Servers
Understood. I took it also as a statement, people seem to be up in arms about free speech and Twitter but from what I seen Mastodon will gladly announce their silencing of opinions which seem to be anything not democrat adjacent. As a squarely middle of the road voter why would I want to use something like Mastodon?

Edit: fuck it maybe I'll setup an instance for people similar to me and see what happens. I don't buy fully in to either side and it's hard to find social groups that feel similarly.

bsagdiyev··on Searchable List of Mastodon Servers
Not sure why this is light grey ("downvoted") -- it's a legit question.
bsagdiyev··on Twitter’s mass layoffs have begun
No he's thinks it's some edgy, never heard of stuff and he's made some compelling argument.
bsagdiyev··on Twitter’s mass layoffs have begun
Activists: take credit

Some dude: "it's totally not them!"

Why would he not think that?

bsagdiyev··on New York could become first state with a ‘Right to Repair’ law
That doesn't invalidate anything. Most around here haul stuff and actually use them.
bsagdiyev··on Stablecoin Mechanics 2: Tether-Celsius
I don't understand. Does your state issue concealed carry permits with no ID requirement? Mine required a background check and classes.
bsagdiyev··on Ask HN: Have you ever heard of users demonstrating against software?
Interesting way of doing it. I haven't played official RuneScape in a while but glad to see some input is taken by the devs.

Game I learned to code on/with, writing java bots around 2001 time frame. Involved in the big dupe, fun times. May need to see how much has changed.

bsagdiyev··on LAPD Officer Killed During Training Exercise Was Investigating Cops About Rape
I lived in the Lake Arrowhead area around that time. There were no shortage of people who said they'd let Dorner shack up with them if he stumbled in to their place.
bsagdiyev··on Should traffic lights be abolished? (2021)
Doubtful. The roundabouts placed in some places in the IE still had people going the wrong way and just generally not understanding how they worked. You'd need to do education along with implementation for something like that to help.

Personally I doubt it would help traffic in any significant manner but who knows.

bsagdiyev··on HAProxy: How to temporary disable a back end server using the command line
This may be resolved in newer versions but definitely bit me before in older ones. I just have a script that drains off the backends we need before putting them in maintenance mode. Makes working on individual hosts much easier.
bsagdiyev··on The Lost Art of System Administration
Anecdotally I've had the opposite experience. Majority of developers I've interacted with didn't understand how anything systems admin side worked. This isn't to say all developers are like that, but that you may be more of an outlier in recent times. Also your admin team sounds awful to work with.
bsagdiyev··on Static site hosting hurdles
I do this and have been for years. If you're really interested we could Zoom through it.
bsagdiyev··on At $249 per day, prison stays leave ex-inmates deep in debt
I have always been able to pay online, over the phone or via mail for my tickets with check, cash, card, or money order. This is in two states: California and North Carolina. For anything more serious than a speeding ticket in NC is a mandatory court visit depending on severity, California has a few more things you can just pay a fine than NC afaik.
bsagdiyev··on “Science must respect the dignity and rights of all humans”
> One always wonders about the German team and why they were not first - and I"m glad they were not.

In regards to this, I believe they were on the right path but they were split in to three groups across Germany. They shared the radioactive material and because of this weren't able to achieve fission (?) due to not having enough material in one spot. Thank $diety for that.
