brtkdotse··on Ask HN: Why not have a heating unit shared by many houses?
It’s not uncommon to see multiple duplexes share a single geothermal heat pump is Sweden.
brtkdotse··on Ask HN: Why not have a heating unit shared by many houses?
If you have housing near a heat producing industry, it’s wasteful to not use the heat that’s getting cooled out anyway.
brtkdotse··on Musk’s inner circle worked through weekend to cement Twitter layoff plans
It’s not the severance that’s the issue, it that a bunch of RSUs vest tomorrow.
brtkdotse··on Space explosion reveals possible hints of dark matter
Sure, but since we’ve used up all easily accessible oil and gas they’d have a hard time to find the energy required to level up a society.
brtkdotse··on The only way of being anonymous in Sweden is illegal?
Yeah, this didn’t happen, or at least not in the way implied by parent.

Only way to get salary info is to count backwards from the tax records, which are made public after the coming May.

brtkdotse··on The only way of being anonymous in Sweden is illegal?
Yes, everyone’s final tax payments are published each year.
brtkdotse··on Tailwind CSS v3.2: revisiting my “feature creep” warning
There’s “not learning CSS - the syntax” and “not learning CSS - the tooling”. Tailwind helps with the latter.
brtkdotse··on Tell HN: The regret of parenting and how to handle it
Technically 10, as one changed their name and doesn't want to ever interact with him again.
brtkdotse··on Ask HN: Is it worth learning C# and .NET in 2022?
> Which means there isn't the one true way of doing things you need to learn either.

A nitpick/disagree here. While it’s true that both C# and the framework are pretty lax about things, there’s definitely a “right” way of doing things as recommended by Microsoft. Following that guidance means it’s easier to hop between .NET codebases

brtkdotse··on Geothermal may beat batteries for energy storage
> the ground we're extracting heat from gets cold

Not if you’re using deep drilled holes (100m+). You can run a heat pump of the differential indefinitely

brtkdotse··on Japanese Knotweed: The alien shrub that can't be stopped
IANAGardener, but the shoots don’t turn green until they’re 10-15 cm high. I guess that means that photosynthesis hasn’t started?

My original plan was to cut the stems and inject with glysophate but I only managed one round before they started requiring a license to purchase it.

brtkdotse··on How Wes Anderson Turned The New Yorker Into “The French Dispatch”
While I’m a huge fan of Andersons earlier work, The French Dispatch was just… too much Wes in one sitting. Like tomato soup with extra ketchup.

A mini-series sounds like grand idea.

brtkdotse··on Japanese Knotweed: The alien shrub that can't be stopped
Despite the bombastic title, it’s just a plant - it needs water, nutrients and the right amount of CO2.
brtkdotse··on Japanese Knotweed: The alien shrub that can't be stopped
I’m currently leading a low intensity war with a 7x4 meter patch on my property. The best strategy so far is turning a small portion of the patch into a lawn and letting the robomower take care of it. I’m making slow but steady progress and in 5-6 years I should be done.
brtkdotse··on Ask HN: Is there a GDPR compliance privacy statement template for small blogs?
> Digital Ocean virtual machine hosted in EU

The Schrems II ruling says it's not enough to have the data hosted in EU since DO is a US corp.

One trick I've seen people use is to move the discussion to a different forum, like posting the article to HN and having a link in the article saying "Discussion on Hacker News".

brtkdotse··on Elon Musk moves ahead with Twitter deal in 13D filing
> Next up, Tesla's stock is going to sink considerably from where it's at.

Dragging the rest of the stock market with it.

It’s like that domino meme, where the tiny brick is “19 year old writes bot tracking Musks private plane” and the huge brick being “stock market crashes”

brtkdotse··on If you were impressed by Tesla's humanoid
> Now try buying one, you can't because they did not make more then the demo units.

I mean, yes, but try buying a Semi or a Cybertruck. My guess is the 20k robot will join that illustrous group.

brtkdotse··on Eye-tracking is a missing input device for VR experiences
> Assuming perfect eye control

No such thing. The eye does constant micro movements and the brain filters this out. You can compensate for this in software but it lowers the target accuracy.

brtkdotse··on Tesla Vehicle Production and Deliveries for 3Q 2022
Balsy move to use the Semi as the header image.
brtkdotse··on Ask HN: How to Stop Caring (Professionally)?
The Hybrid Calesthnics guy has a really good program for people like OP ( and me)

brtkdotse··on Ask HN: Ideas for a subtle but pleasant home office aroma?
Do you have hardwood floors? Try scrubbing them with linseed soap, the smell is divine.
brtkdotse··on Ask HN: Course/Book for creating desktop apps in C#
The problem with desktop apps is that Microsoft keeps changing the narrative of what the recommended way is every 2-3 years.

Windows Forms? WPF? Xamarin? UWP? Maui?

I have no clue.

brtkdotse··on Growing indifference to relationships and sex in Japan
We’re seeing the first generation who are worse off than their parents. The future looks bleak with climate change and multiple conflicts around the world.
brtkdotse··on Ask HN: Eastern Europe and STEM has more women than Western Europe?
> It is just nature.

No, its just an anecdote. You even said it yourself.

brtkdotse··on Starlink now over 1M user terminals manufactured
I read an opinion piece somewhere that Starlink is just busy work to keep SpaceX launching rockets, but because gestures at Google I can’t find it. This Twitter thread nakes this theory plausible.
brtkdotse··on Ask HN: Strategies to land remote US job while living in living in EU?
> $60k/yr is a slighly above average salary for a senior backend engineer in Poland

I don't doubt you, but do you have a link with the source for this? I'd love to have it for a discussion in another forum :)

brtkdotse··on Ask HN: Strategies to land remote US job while living in living in EU?
> 60k is a poverty line

I suspect you’re probably being facetious, but it’s borderline distasteful towards those on the actual poverty line.

brtkdotse··on Ask HN: Companies of one, what is your tech stack?
Just wanted to let you know I’m I deeply impressed by your work with your site, your whole no-nonsense philosophy really vibes with me.

Kudos!

brtkdotse··on Ask HN: Companies of one, what is your tech stack?
Good on you. WordPress is a fantastic piece of software and I think a lot of the nose wrinkling and hemming a hawing about security comes from people installing suspect plugins.

If you stick with the core product and set a very high bar for which plugins you install, Wordpress is rock solid

brtkdotse··on IR35 reform to be repealed; workers will determine employment status
