brtkdotse··on Payments crisis of 2025: Not “read only” access anymore
Musk isn't a policitican.
brtkdotse··on The young, inexperienced engineers aiding DOGE
> The actions are entirely unconstitutional.

For all the fetishization of the constitution popular media has led me to believe Americans engage in, when push comes to shove it doesn’t seem to be worth the paper it’s written on.

brtkdotse··on Keycloak, Angular, and the BFF Pattern
> The BFF pattern is just "mostly microservices dedicated to a particular client type".

If you’re building dedicated APIs for just one client you’ve come full circle and building a monolith with a bunch of extra step. Why not just build a good old web app at that point?

brtkdotse··on AI, but at What Cost? Breakdown of AI's Carbon Footprint
> more like “ends justify the means at any cost”

Everyone is crystal clear on this, the goal is to replace expensive humans to increase profits.

brtkdotse··on Ask HN: What's the best way to de-Google photos?
Multicloud looks like something I’ve been looking for but the website gives of incredibly sketch vibes for some reason
brtkdotse··on Sweden brings more books and handwriting practice back to its schools (2023)
> Now I have my whole library in Calibre and on my Kindle.

Funnily enough I’m contemplating buying a MiniDisc player since my music listening has gone way down since Spotify came along.

Its like the abdunance of selection is overwhelming.

brtkdotse··on The Future of Htmx
> The only other thing you need to know is few hooks.

...and then draw the rest of the owl.

brtkdotse··on Tell HN: I just updated my wife's Chrome, and uBlock is no longer supported
You know you can pay to have the ads go away?
brtkdotse··on Ask HN: Are you unable to find employment?
> Fachkräftemangel

Why is this German word thrown in without any explanation? I’ve noticed this is a common trend whenever a Germany-adjacent topic is discussed.

brtkdotse··on Spotify Shuts Down ‘Unwrapped’ Artist Royalty Calculator with Legal Threats
Or Apples family offering. For ~€40 we get Apple Music, Apple TV+, 2 TB of iCloud and probably something more for the whole family.
brtkdotse··on Ask HN: Why don't mobile apps use pure black for dark mode?
I’m a backend developer who’s trying to build up some rudimentary design chops and I’ve a consumed quite a few resources about design.

A lot of them say, pretty early on, “don’t use pure black or pure white, period”

brtkdotse··on Ask HN: 2026 Predictions
So… Black Mirror season 3 then?
brtkdotse··on Tokyo is set to introduce a four-day workweek for government employees
It's not great if it's 15 million supporting 35 million children, elderly and sick.
brtkdotse··on Bitcoin price hits $100K for first time in history
Ah, the main application of Bitcoin - ransomware - is now more lucrative then ever.
brtkdotse··on PHP 8.4
My experience is that 99% of the work related to geters and seters is handled by the IDE
brtkdotse··on Show HN: Tips.io – A Tailwind playground with AI, page management, and theming
> What about developers who don't want to use Tailwind?

What's that Steve Jobs quote? "You know, you can please some of the people some of the time"

I have a hunch there's a good reason almost all of these site builders go with Tailwind rather than classic CSS, but as mostly-backend developer I couldn't tell you what that was :)

brtkdotse··on The price of shutting down coal power, and what would be gained
Natural gas is terrible, but arguably less terrible than coal which aside from CO2 spews out a plethora of other nasty compounds.
brtkdotse··on The Hidden Tax Trap for SaaS Founders in Germany
FWIW it’s the same thing if you buy an American stock from a EU country, the dividends are taxed in the US.

That why global index funds are probably the best way to invest for non-professionals

brtkdotse··on The Hidden Tax Trap for SaaS Founders in Germany
If you ever plan on selling your company you’d do well to have it wholly owned by a holding company (which in turn is owned by you).
brtkdotse··on A Student's Guide to Writing with ChatGPT
That’s odd. Outside of reading comprehension assignments I never had any fact memorization as part of any language course.

Perhaps they changed the curriculum since the 90s

brtkdotse··on A Student's Guide to Writing with ChatGPT
> I refused to learn geography because we had map applications

Which is ironic, because geography isn’t about memorizing maps

brtkdotse··on Ask HN: I don't want higher salary, I need more freetime
I switched to contracting and make sure all my contacts are “up to 80%”.

For the past 7 years I’ve worked around 1200 hours per year on average

brtkdotse··on Peak population may be coming sooner than we think
I feel that people underestimate the impact of this.

The current world economy is built on the assumption that the population pyramid is a pyramid, if there’s a glut in the influx of healthy new citizens a whole slew of supply chains will collapse.

brtkdotse··on What's New in F# 9
> A few fumbles by Microsoft early on stunted its growth

Microsoft really, _really_ missed out on a huge opportunity to rebrand .NET into something else when they did the Framework -> Core transition. Despite .NET being cross platform for over ten years and winning benchmarks left and right people still see it a the “slow enterprisey framework that only runs on Windows”.

brtkdotse··on Australia proposes ban on social media for those under 16
There’s a near-zero chance of getting caught driving without a license. Despite not having a drivers license checking mechanism, people generally don’t drive without a license because of the mere fact that it’s illegal.

Societal signaling is pretty powerful.

brtkdotse··on BYD added a Tesla-worth of production capacity over the past 3 months
They both cost in the same ball park as a Tesla Model Y. They are not affordable cars by any stretch of the imagination.
brtkdotse··on BYD added a Tesla-worth of production capacity over the past 3 months
> Is it? At this point I’ve driven electric Audis and BMWs, VWs, Kia’s and also BYDs.

The real problem is that legacy car makers’ EVs are all high-mid/luxury cars.

People just want a Honda Civic that takes them from point A to point B.

brtkdotse··on Ask HN: Is patio11's salary negotiation guide relevant in today's market?
Sure. But it’s a domain specific term within negotiation that easily researchable if someone would want to learn more.

Just trying to be helpful :)

brtkdotse··on Ask HN: Is patio11's salary negotiation guide relevant in today's market?

The employers BATNA is they go to the pool of 35 other candidates. Yours is you go back to your job.

If your job hunting first when your sick to death of your job, your BATNA isn’t very strong.

If this is your only offer, your BATNA isn’t very strong.

If you’re one paycheck away from being out of the street, your BATNA isn’t very strong.

See where I’m going with this?

brtkdotse··on Smartphone buyers meh on AI, care more about battery life
Never mind AI, I just want Siri to have better text-to-speech quality than my freaking vacuum cleaner.
