brtkdotse··on Photos from the SpaceX Debris Field
Except Starship is Elons vanity project with very few actual use cases.
brtkdotse··on Shell admits 1.5C climate goal means immediate end to fossil fuel growth
Natural gas is a fossil fuel.
brtkdotse··on Career advice no one gave me: Give a lot of notice when you quit
Termination dates are in the employment contract 99.9% in Sweden. At most you’ll get a “lmao, no”.
brtkdotse··on Spotify is trying to silence former employees in severance contracts
Except gag orders an unenforceable in Sweden so it’s just BigCo intimidation
brtkdotse··on Bob Lee, former CTO of Square, has died after being stabbed in San Francisco
What has the government done to your city?
brtkdotse··on Build full “product skills” and you'll probably be fine
Sure, but in the time of DJs and hell, Spotify, you probably can’t expect to make a decent living as a live musician.
brtkdotse··on An end to typographic widows on the web
Same in Sweden (or at least used to be) - horunge. If you have a widow on a new page that’s a dubbel horunge.
brtkdotse··on “Clean Code, Horrible Performance” Discussion
> At some point in my programmer career I figured out that optimizing for human comprehension, a.k.a. "clean code", is a valid goal.

I fully agree that human comprehension should be a prime objective for code. Alas, following the tenets of “Clean Code” produces anything but that.

brtkdotse··on Ask HN: Is Instagram “Dying”?
Sounds like you wanted LinkedIn, not Twitter.
brtkdotse··on Ask HN: How to prevent a company from taking my domain name?
Amazon.se was registered by a 1-person company Amazon AB in 1997. The reason Amazon didn't launch in Sweden until 2020 was because the person who owned Amazon AB didn't want to sell (but finally did).

Since company tax filings are public in Sweden, you can deduct Amazon paid ~$500k for amazon.se, which in my mind is very cheap.

brtkdotse··on You’re Not a Girlboss – You’re Just Trapped in an MLM Scheme (2020)
> A thing is only an MLM if the people at the top of it are actually getting rich off of the backs of the people below them

… otherwise it’s just sparkling scam? ;)

brtkdotse··on You’re Not a Girlboss – You’re Just Trapped in an MLM Scheme (2020)
“ The epiphany that explains the crypto boom, Andrew Tate, “passive income” strategies, dropshipping, finance influencers, executive training programs, meme stocks, etc is the commercial realization that American men are extremely susceptible to multi-level marketing schemes”

brtkdotse··on Ask HN: Side projects that generate $0 / month
I have a developer podcast in Swedish (https://kompilator.se) that I initially wanted to monetize but decided it wasn’t worth the hassle. It has netted me a chance to talk to interesting people, build my personal brand, get rid of my fear of speaking and even gotten me a few new friends.

I have a stupidly simple site (https://statligskatt.se) that says where the National tax cutoff is this year, because I kept forgetting it when making prognoses for my business. Around important tax dates in Sweden, it gets a few thousand hits.

brtkdotse··on Ask HN: You, a programmer, teleported to 1960's. how would you be a millionaire?
These thinly veiled product research Ask-threads are getting out of hand.
brtkdotse··on Testing Without Mocks
Seems like a lot of work just to avoid mocks. Don’t know if this is language specific but I find it’s really easy to create mocks and/or in-memory substitutions in .NET using something like Moq.
brtkdotse··on Ask HN: Should I use WebP and stop providing PNG and JPEG?
I’ve noticed that LinkedIn doesn’t support webp as the card image, so I have temporarily reverted to jpgs for those in my podcast site.
brtkdotse··on Tell HN: I'm scared of sharing my opinion online
Sounds like you just re-discovered the toaster fucker problem:

brtkdotse··on Ups and downs of a side project
> I’ve spent about 3 months on a new product, i spent all day yesterday trying to figure out how to sell it effectively.

If it's one thing I've learned from following bootstrappers and trying to start my own SaaS - it's that you should spend 3 months selling and 1 day building.

brtkdotse··on Tesla Semi, a Deep Dive
> Tesla is not going to have any demand issues here. If this thing works as advertised (and that seems to be the case) and they ramp up production to 50k vehicles/year over the next two years

Pretty big “if” they’re chief. While they very well may not have any demand issues, I’m going to go out on a limb and say they’ll probably will have supply issues. Launching the production of a new model is no walk in the park and the organization already seems to have problems with QA on the existing models.

brtkdotse··on Ask HN: Is there any great free PostgreSQL provider?
Digital Ocean has managed Postgres for $15. I wouldn’t in my wildest fantasies trust a free Postgres provider.
brtkdotse··on The Twitter Files
Imagine paying 44 billion buckaroos to become a mod.
brtkdotse··on Layoff spree in Silicon Valley spells end of an era for Big Tech
Can’t find the source but Hard Fork podcast said that after these layoffs Meta headcount is down to where they were in March THIS YEAR
brtkdotse··on A Russian Missile Crew Was Geolocated from Just This Photo
> At least I’d have to blame the developers of the hellfire missile and reaper drone just as much.

I mean… yes?!

brtkdotse··on A Russian Missile Crew Was Geolocated from Just This Photo
> By searching through geotagged photos of the street on the Russian social network VK they came across a high-resolution photograph taken by a professional roofer while he was on top of the north wall of the facility

RIP Russian professional roofer

brtkdotse··on Hydrogen-producing rooftop solar panels nearing commercialization
That’s the case here and currently the economics are in my favor (I’ll probably be able to sell for more than I buy). That however, can change swiftly.
brtkdotse··on Hydrogen-producing rooftop solar panels nearing commercialization
Batteries make sense on the scale of days. My coming solar installation will yield ~250% of my usage may-September and 10% of my January usage. I’d rather store the summer excess production until winter.
brtkdotse··on Ask HN: Do You Pirate Software?
No. I’m a member of the best paid group _ON EARTH_, so I make sure people working on the software I use can put food on the table.

Never mind the fact the incredible savings time wise not having to hunt for serialz.

brtkdotse··on Ask HN: I will become a father tomorrow, what advice could you share with me?
Regarding 2) - there is always a point to comforting a baby. Just don't fret if it doensn't seem to be working.
brtkdotse··on General Mills latest to halt Twitter ads as Musk takeover sparks brand exodus
Nothing has changed, says the man with a terrible track record of keeping his word.
brtkdotse··on Twitter’s mass layoffs have begun
Can't find the article now but it made an interesting point that Starlink is just busywork for SpaceX to keep launching rockets.
