brtkdotse··on Have McKinsey and its consulting rivals got too big?
> McKinsey asked us for lots of information. Then they put it into a dossier and gave it back to us."

To be fair, that’s exactly what a psychologist does

brtkdotse··on My experiences with Automattic: Part 3
Is WordPress even used for blogging anymore? In my view it’s more akin to Emacs or Jira - a platform to build whatever you want that out of the box just happens to be configured as a blog/text editor/bug tracker.

I’d say this is the golden moment for Ghost to shine.

brtkdotse··on I quit Amazon after being assigned 21 direct reports
It’s weird how different cultures can be. I’m in Sweden and never had a boss with less than 30 reports.
brtkdotse··on Ask HN: Developer laptop that doesn't suck in 2024 and it's not Apple silicone
I’ve had great luck with the Thinkpad P14s range with AMD CPUs. Cost around 30-40% of a MacBook and get me around 6-7 hours as my daily driver
brtkdotse··on Day Rates (2023)
Jonathan’s stuff I awesome _however_ if you’re someone who slings code for a living you’ll probably have a hard time implementing his ideas.
brtkdotse··on Orion, our first true augmented reality glasses
> next consumer electronics platform

I really hope this isn’t the case. We have enough screens around us as is, the last thing I want is screens pressed up against my eyeballs

brtkdotse··on Ruby on Rails continues to thrive
Y'all should look at the rest of the site. This is written by a content farm. These kinds of "blogs" serve the purspose of building up authority with google by writing waffer thin but linkable articles (as shown by it appearing on the front page of HN) and then sell backlinks to online casinos for SEO juice.

You've been bamboozeled.

brtkdotse··on Stop Designing Your Web Application for Millions of Users When You Dont Have 100
”I better buy a smaller clothes now in case I suddenly lose weight next week”
brtkdotse··on Stop Designing Your Web Application for Millions of Users When You Dont Have 100
> The SQL database is probably the hardest part to scale

Use an ORM and SQLite, I bet you a beer that you won’t hit the perf ceiling before getting bored of your project.

brtkdotse··on US health system ranks last compared with peer nations – report
If you’re a billionaire EVERYTHING is fantastic.
brtkdotse··on Unlock Articles with Paywallskip
I’d like something like this, but instead of bypassing the paywalls and stealing the articles it’d pay a few cents for each article and charge me at the end of the month.

I really, really want to pay but I really, really don’t want to set up a subscription to read a one-off article.

brtkdotse··on Medieval
> endless hours of enjoyment from buying/selling

I get a bunch of satisfaction purchasing used high end gear, owning it for a few months and then selling it for more or less what I bought it for. I usually get some nice social interaction with the seller/buyer as a bonus.

brtkdotse··on Medieval
> However, I do think there is a case to be made for falling into the trap of being more interested in the gear than the thing you're meant to do with the gear.

Is that such a bad thing? It’s supposed to be a hobby, if geeking out on gear relaxes you you shouldn’t have to feel bad for not being productive with it.

brtkdotse··on It's not just you, Next.js is getting harder to use
As someone who got started with web dev by sending HTML over HTTP I marvel about the ways modern web devs contort themselves to be able to send json instead.
brtkdotse··on Solar generates fifth of global electricity on summer solstice midday peak
That’s comforting in some sense. Got a link or a graph I can use to propagate these news?
brtkdotse··on Ask HN: What skills do you think will be most in-demand in 10 years?
Good old fashioned server wrangling, since the pendulum will be back in full swing from “cloud” back to “on-prem”.
brtkdotse··on Tesla shareholders re-approve Elon Musk's 2018 pay package
I thought the vote was happening today?
brtkdotse··on Popular Mac app 'Bartender' acquired by new unknown developer
I’ve tried switching from Windows to MacOS three times over the past few years and each time I run up against the wall of having to research, choose and purchase small utilities to fix things that I never in a million years would’ve guessed would be an issue.

Windows management.

File handler.

Menu bar organizers.

The list goes on.

brtkdotse··on Ask HN: The "Japanese Developer" Scam
> So they want to use your freelancing profiles (Upwork, fiverr, etc) your IP address (Using TeamViewer), and your US bank accounts to secure those contracts. They'll split the profits with you 50/50. All you have to do is let them apply to jobs using your account, show up for the online interviews and pretend that you're the one doing the work.

This is Nigerian Prince level of obvious red flags.

brtkdotse··on Ask HN: Why isn't Laravel used in more enterprise apps?
> You'll see people promoting Laravel as faster and cheaper than say C#

Faster in what way? Cheaper in what way?

brtkdotse··on Big data is dead (2023)
> 95% of businesses never become unicorns, but that's the goal for most

Is it really the general case or is it just a HN echo chamber meme?

My pet peeve is that patterns used by companies that in theory could become global unicorns are mimicked by companies where 5000 paying customers would mean an immense success

brtkdotse··on EU opens child safety probes of Facebook and Instagram, citing addictive design
> Do European countries require printing pictures of diseased lungs on the side of cigarette boxes?

They do.

brtkdotse··on Ask HN: What is the most productive stack or lang for single devs ?
I think .NET has gotten, or rather failed to shake off, a reputation as slow and Windows-only.

It's very powerful, the tooling is free and best-in-class, self hosting on a cheap Linux VPS is trivial and the framework itself includes almost any functionality you could wish for with installing random packages.

brtkdotse··on Berlin Tesla activists say civil disobedience is only option
It’s pretty eye brow raising if true, got a source for that?
brtkdotse··on Apple announces new iPad Air and iPad Pro tablets
They're just phoning it in these days and going full EA FIFA-playbook.
brtkdotse··on Cybertruck Owner Breaks His Finger Trying to Show Vehicle Is Safe
Or, you know, don't risk losing a finger to prove How Great The Truck Is.
brtkdotse··on Ask HN: How to Set Consulting Rate?
Value pricing is just entrepreneurial fan fiction unless you happen to be in a niche where that is possible.

Run-of-the-mill dev work is not it.

brtkdotse··on Multiple Displays on a Mac Sucks
Three times I tried switching from Windows to Mac and each time I bounced because of how janky basic window ergonomics were. I shouldn't have to buy single-dollar-programs to fix core OS functionality.
brtkdotse··on Leaving Substack
> I wish such platforms didn't exist at all, and people just went to small websites.

I wish it too but at this point this is basically pining for Usenet while everyone is on PhpBB-boards. The world has moved on and won’t be coming back.

brtkdotse··on The man who killed Google Search?
At this point I’m not even sure there is anything to find. The web as we remember seem to have withered away, suffocated by SEO optimized content farms
