My email was not published anywhere with regards to bitcoin or coinbase, I receive relatively little spam, yet I received 4 of these spam messages. Smells fishy.

The thing is that GOX may have experienced a major theft via TM prior to 2013, fixed the bug and operated with a BTC deficit. In this case, extrapolation is useless.

It is a very rough estimate that mainly serves to give us an idea of the magnitude of possible theft due to TM.

While very interesting, the scope of this study is limited by the fact that their data collection only goes back to January 2013, so anything that happened before that was not considered. I don't want to defend Gox, but it is conceivable that they lost significant amounts of BTC prior to this via TM and were just doing business with a deficit of BTC.

it is still not clear if it is 63 million + 750k BTC in debt, or in total. If in total it is not clear how btc are valued.

Even if we view it that way, there was no bug in bitcoin.

It is indeed absurd to claim they lost 99.7% of btc holdings (2000 left out of 750k) - I dont care how incompetent they may be..

my understanding is that the TxID is a sha256 of the entire transaction, hence it would be feasibly and even rather simple to scan the blockchain for invalid transaction IDs.. however we would have no idea which ones could be attributed to mtgox

Its coinbase's index, hence it is up to them who to include or exclude. If you dont like it, you are welcome to use a different index.

that was not even the real issue. they called to check what was generating all that traffic and he told them that he was running servers - that was against the tos, not the bandwidth he used.
