brodney··on That awkward moment when Apple mocked good hardware and poor people
iCloud backup costs $0.99 for 50GB of space. It's basically free.
brodney··on Don't Attend a Hackathon
This has nothing to do with Hackathon attendance.
brodney··on Advice to software development interns
It reads to me like a self important rant. I don't know what the author tried to do to resolve these issues, but the tone of the article doesn't make me optimistic.
brodney··on Tmux 2.0 released
> don't underestimate the effects on brand value, which will come subconsciously, if you look at ads.

This is exactly why I use adblock.

brodney··on A better pull request
I really like the idea of merge conflicts being resolved in the open in a pull request, instead of the pull requester working in seclusion. For those of us with projects on GitHub, is there any way to replicate this behavior there?
brodney··on Try Git
> 1) I don't think providing the message (-m) on the command line is a good habit for beginners.

Why? I started that way and still do it today. Is it considered a bad practice?

brodney··on Stop Changing UIs for No Good Reason
I'm pretty pleased with lollipop. Some of your complaints may be down to personal choice, but not all. For example, the triangle animation changes from pointing left when the action would be 'back', to down when the action is 'down', as in hiding the keyboard.

Some other thoughts: - Getting to settings is no different from before when I had to swipe down and then tap a button to see the settings button. Now it's two swipes instead. - Try schedule view in calendar for the overview you're looking for. - The double tap on notifications to open them I like because it means I won't accidentally open one.

Things I've said 'oh, cool!' to: - Guest accounts - Brightness slider in the swipe down - Priority/None interruption settings for the ringer. I used to use Shush! but this works nicely and with more configuration options, albeit less granular timing. - Lock rotation in the swipe down settings - Flashlight in the swipe down settings

Just another data point.

brodney··on The LaTeX cargo cult
If .rtf/.doc is in such high demand, can't we output to those formats using LaTeX? I think of it as just another output alongside dvi/pdf/etc, but I know very little of the internals that would generate those additional formats.
brodney··on The Glassmaker Who Sparked Astrophysics
And episode 8, "Sisters of the Sun"[1], covered Pickering and his "colleagues", several women nicknamed computers, namely Annie Jump Cannon, and Cecilia Payne.

brodney··on Storemapper: Bootstrapped to $50k/year in 2 years
If I were paying ~2400/yr and was given the option of ~1000/yr, I would think I've been grossly overpaying for the monthly option. In your shoes I would offer one month free for 2200/yr rather than 7 months free.
brodney··on Ask HN: Weekend project stories
I need this basically everyday. I develop iOS apps and need pngs for icons all the time, and I'm just not that handy with photoshop yet. Please don't let this app die anytime soon!
brodney··on Best of Vim Tips
What tools are you trying to use that make it such a hassle?
brodney··on Woman’s cancer killed by measles virus in trial
It seems more likely that simply dying before getting old enough to develop cancer is the reason there was less incidence of cancer centuries ago.
brodney··on Processed foods that dilute protein content subvert our appetite control systems
The article mentions a 0.8% decline in protein concentration. That seems negligibly low. Does such a small variance really matter to foods?

The interesting part seems to be the increase in carbs/fats at 8% over the same 35 years.

brodney··on Suburbs Try to Prevent an Exodus as Young Adults Move to Cities and Stay
How is this a problem that needs preventing? Alternate title: "People like living in the city more these days"
brodney··on Ask HN: How do you get and stay in the "zone"?
I'm a little biased because I do practice yoga. But I also walk. And, for me personally, yoga is always a more vigorous workout. I can't imagine how walking could ever approach the level of intensity yoga provides.
brodney··on Ask HN: How do you get and stay in the "zone"?
Why do you think that?
brodney··on Google Glass Explorer Open to US
I think it is safe to assume, with I/O around the corner, they're selling off the rest of v1 stock. I'm looking forward to v2 and a price drop in v1.
brodney··on Meyrin: CERN Terminal Font
That does look better. How could a blur be incorporated into the ttf?
brodney··on Dragdis – Drag and drop anything anywhere
Unsubstantiated ad hominem against mac users to complain about the open source nature of a cross platform product. Did you burn your breakfast?
brodney··on Keurig Will Use DRM In New Coffee Maker
Back then it was more difficult to tell the crap from the quality stuff. Crap substitutes don't last too long on the market these days with online reviews. I'm rarely hesitant to buy something with a ton of good reviews, and further that means more to me than would a Keurig Seal of Approval.
brodney··on Alcatraz – Package manager for Xcode 5
I've been using XVim for over a year now and it's been reasonably stable. They have an issue with code folding but then I don't fold while the plugin is enabled.
brodney··on The Magic of strace
It was my mistake to link you to a tutorial on the thing you are asking about. I don't know what came over me.

brodney··on N.S.A. Devises Radio Pathway Into Computers
I came looking for a discussion of the mechanism by which such an attack might be possible.

brodney··on I Got Myself Arrested So I Could Look Inside the Justice System
> In not going after the author, the police simply did the analysis they are required to do: is this guy a threat within the spirit of the law?

I don't think we know that. Maybe it's true, but I can't rule out other possibilities.

brodney··on Uber’s “Price Gouging” Is the Future of Business
It is also the past, for several hundred years now.
