Very neat!
brandnewlow··on Timeline of the OpenAI accidental attack against Hugging Face
It's like all those scenes on Breaking Bad where a character pulls off something amazing by just brute forcing the problem in a methodical fashion until it's solved.
brandnewlow··on One Battle After Another: PTA and the Death of Revolutionary Cinema
This movie was great. If you liked thoughtful almost-action movies No Country for Old Men or even something like The Fugitive, you’ll enjoy this. There are cinematic set pieces as beautiful as anything I’ve seen in years (the rooftop sequence!) the acting is stellar throughout, and the finale gives an original take on one of the most common film plot devices of all time.

The film’s politics are very progressive/liberal so I can imagine that deterring some viewers but PTA adds a lot of nuance and subversion throughout that make it more of an examination of radicalism than a straight trumpeting of it. As mentioned in another comment the radical characters often disagree and are shown taking very different strategies that then produce very different outcomes.

This is one of my favorite HN comments. Thank you for writing about music in an interesting way.
brandnewlow··on Ask HN: What's Your Biggest Regret?
I'm sorry for your loss.
brandnewlow··on What's it like to star in a flop?
Every song on Feeling Strangely Fine is terrific. The other albums have great songs but uninteresting ones too.
brandnewlow··on The Rise of Nintendo: A Story in 8 Bits (2014)
Fun book. I’ve said this before on here but it purports to lionize the Sega of America folks but can’t help but present them as non-technical marketers without much depth to them. Meanwhile the Nintendo crew, ostensibly the bad guys in the story’s narrative, seem passionate, principled and serious about shipping great games people love.
brandnewlow··on Larry Page: “I think we should look into acquiring YouTube” (2005)
Advertisers of note strongly prefer to put their ads next to the second type of content, not the first.

brandnewlow··on Great books on classic video games
And perhaps unintentionally the Nintendo folks come out looking cool, authentic and passionate about making great games while the Sega folks seem like a bunch of cargo cult marketers who happen to be trying to sell games.

brandnewlow··on Launch HN: Plum Mail (YC S20) – Email alternative for group conversations
There’s a million tools like this out there but brokers just want to get deals closed so they fall back to whatever is preferred by the borrower which is always email.

brandnewlow··on LinkedIn to cut 960 jobs worldwide
I think we’ve seen that UGC is and always has been a bit of a myth. Social media companies have always quietly employed armies of people to moderate user posts, persuade famous people and Companies to post, to actually do the posting and “media strategy” for those VIPs and companies, and then of course to sell the ads and pro services that come with it all.

brandnewlow··on Shaking Up the Diamond Industry
I can’t speak to finance but I get confused when people bash advertising in broad strokes. People running businesses need ways to exchange money for new customers. That’s advertising. Making that more efficient might surely be annoying but a complete waste of time?

These are gorgeous and still feel very fresh and vibrant. Thank you for sharing.
brandnewlow··on Launch HN: Got-it (YC W19) – Bluetooth labels for tracking things at work
I don't think anything is preventing you or anyone else from plunking down $100 and testing Got-Its out for consumer use. I just wouldn't expect it to be greatly supported in the near term.
