bragh··on Everybody’s home. No one’s coming over
It's not mean, it's practical. Household chores need doing, men would go and spend money on alcohol, might get into fights and so on.
bragh··on Everybody’s home. No one’s coming over
> Another thing that caught my attention is that my female friends all have active social lives, whereas that is very rare among the men I know (again, past a certain age).

Yes, that is a pretty typical thing. Starting around late 20s, pretty much most guys are either part of a steady relationship, usually with kids or permanently without a relationship. The men with families have their own family events and get included in the wife's social and family circle. The guys who do not get paired up are not welcome at those events and wives forbid the partnered up guys to hang out with their single male friends on the other days. To be fair, there is nowadays anyway so much online entertainment, that it probably will be fine in the end.

bragh··on Nvidia announces native GPU programming in Rust
As much as I personally dislike TikTok, I don't think it is fair to it: cultural willingness for more sensor sheep on Internet started years before TikTok's popularity in the west.
bragh··on Normalized Fascism in Open Source: $12M Given to DHH
Sure. And there were never any restrictions during COVID either, right?
bragh··on Normalized Fascism in Open Source: $12M Given to DHH
Social media is upstream from beliefs and actions that happen in real life. Not even by mid-2000's, early days of 4chan, could people claim that Internet and real life are separate. The same people who write those kind of things on Twitter and Tumblr and now Bluesky, are the same ones who work at schools and universities, run NGOs, advise local municipality and government policy, and so on. So "you may not be interested in politics, but politics is interested in you", but with social media roots of politics.

Also, what's up with misquoting me? I never used the phrase "mainstream cultural mainstream".

bragh··on Normalized Fascism in Open Source: $12M Given to DHH
Not sure if honest mistake, but this is what was going on in Twitter and Tumblr for a long while. Obviously in recent years people are trying to walk back on it because of the backlash.
bragh··on Normalized Fascism in Open Source: $12M Given to DHH
Complaining about blowback when for the past 15+ years the mainstream cultural narrative has been #killallmen, "COVID-19 vaccines came too early, not enough men died", "religious people should be sent to labour camps" and so on is for sure something.
bragh··on Young Americans increasingly fear AI will take their jobs
Unattractive nerdy kids being able to escape generational poverty thanks to programming skills is what broke law, business and politics caste members minds. It is unfathomable that somebody could be paid well for a job when they didn't even do Erasmus program or have an internship in EU or NATO office.
bragh··on Rewriting in Rust
That comparison figure of LaTeX vs Typst is ridiculous, choosing math-dense example for LaTeX vs classical markdown text for Typst. Yes, Typst syntax is much simpler https://typst.app/docs/reference/math/ but one doesn't need to make unfair comparisons to make Rust look better, Rust has a lot of good things going for it anyway, for example cargo.
bragh··on Will you have spent more of your life with computers than your family?
Exactly this. That would probably not have been a good ending without the donated PC and shared ADSL connection between neighbors.

God bless Debian.

bragh··on Jason Arday, ex-Cambridge professor at centre of plagiarism row, found dead
He did claim harassment with the police against the journalist who was initally investigating him: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c0rd9y99grzo Now consider that this was in UK.
bragh··on The UK's war on anonymity has come to America
And now, "it's still in the package!"
bragh··on Crime Pays but Botany Doesn't
It's an interesting topic, though. If Latin is backwards because of assocation with European cultures, what are biologists nowadays proposing to replace it with? Some kind of universal coding system like ISBN or DOI?
bragh··on Don't be a meat proxy
Quite a few people do believe that a good specification is long, has multiple levels of headings, interspersed bold text, bullet points, and so on. Definitely, this is what they have seen happen throughout their lives: competent people have heaped praise on documentation which has had these signs, so this must be what good documentation looks like.
bragh··on An Uncomplicated Man – A review of The Odyssey, directed by Christopher Nolan
Yes, but the film was made for modern audiences using the modern translation. Isn't it somewhat ridiculous to criticize a film for exactly following the cultural conventions it is supposed to follow?
bragh··on An Uncomplicated Man – A review of The Odyssey, directed by Christopher Nolan
It was a direct quote from the review. Yes, she did use "sex scenes".
bragh··on An Uncomplicated Man – A review of The Odyssey, directed by Christopher Nolan
Fair enough about the other points. But this is a ridiculous "hot take":

> There are no sex scenes, and all the food looks horrible.

Yes and if there were sex scenes, then the film would get criticized for having sex scene(s), not being able to tell the story of a Greek epic without turning it into erotica or something.

bragh··on OverpAId – Fire your CEO. Hire the future
Awful choice for whom exactly? From their point of view, it is the rational choice.
bragh··on Programmers need to start meditating
They crashed yes, but not for too long and they did recover. And was it ever confirmed it was because of vibe coding? Not sure how much if any it even impacted their stock.
bragh··on Programmers need to start meditating
Maybe we just aren't far enough in the vibe coding side of things and there are still too many people in the industry who still pay attention to details, so no major catastrophes haven't happened yet because of vibe coding. So the people who pay attention to details are still carrying their organizations, but I do wonder how long it is going to be sustainable.

When it comes to joy killers because of AI, then it is dismal how plagiarism (going by the definition of "presenting someone else's work without attribution") suddenly became widely accepted. When I see long lists of bullet points with interspersed bold text, I know that it is something the sender did not write or bother reviewing. Absolute cherry on top when in the end of that text you see the typical LLM suggestion that you can ask for more information, which the sender didn't even bother removing.

bragh··on Surveillance is not safety: A statement on the UK's latest threat to privacy [pdf]
Oh, the people who work on secure boot, attestation, DRM, and other such features know very well, but don't care. This is because the claimed benefits for them, such as less hackers, less malware, less bot traffic, outweigh any possible downsides for the society.
bragh··on Talking to strangers at the gym
Yes. It's not a hard concept?
bragh··on How to talk to anyone and why you should
Say what? Technology has been awesome, it pretty much eliminates the risk in social interactions. With Internet, you are not forced to be part of a community you have no interest in and who do not like you anyway because of your interests, but you can choose and pick your own community. And the same goes for dating apps, they help completely derisk the initial approach and as pointed out elsewhere in this thread, risk of being seen as a creep.
bragh··on 40M Americans Live Alone, 29% of households
The phrasing in your sources is absolutely horrible and brings back high school vibes of "lonely kids are bad because they are lonely, so they must be bullied to make them normal again". Just great.
bragh··on 40M Americans Live Alone, 29% of households
> lots of them stay adolescent well into their 30s and require a caregiver or a substitute mom more than a gf/wife

What do you actually mean by this part?

bragh··on Dell UltraSharp 52 Thunderbolt Hub Monitor
Amazing, checked just now and seems that these are now in stock in many places. When I checked last week, they weren't, seems like some stock got released for EU then.
bragh··on Dell UltraSharp 52 Thunderbolt Hub Monitor
In EU, have not seen PA32QCV ever in stock anywhere.
bragh··on Ask HN: How can we solve the loneliness epidemic?
If those people got a haircut, brushed their teeth and took a shower, they would be attractive!
bragh··on I rebooted my social life
You misunderstand me. No, I do not think that it is a good thing that society works this way, but yet it does.
bragh··on I rebooted my social life
Eventually it doesn't end well indeed. But modern society has made it pretty clear that older men aren't actually needed and are more of a burden. Just look at how triggered the GP of the thread got just about a mention that men might want a different approach when it comes to social stuff.

Well, not needed, unless an actual shooting war breaks out and you need a lot more people pulling guard duty or just some very high-risk stuff younger men should not be wasted on. Like that Ukrainian unit of pensioner men in a ground-attack missile unit who source their own missiles by repairing unexploded ones.
